I can't express how much I love this channel. I can relate to these more than any nature/adventure show on television. You guys hike without trying to "get anywhere" and instead stop to enjoy the nature that you are passing through. Plus, you bring your experiences as a kid along with you into nature, whether it's from video games, movies, or books. You do an amazing job of showing that you don't have to get involved in some extreme sport or become a bearded wild man to connect with nature, and that its ok to bring the inspiration from our childhood along with us as we age and explore the world around us. Also, as someone from Indiana I have been to several of the places in your videos, including North Manitou. One of my favorite memories ever is waking up with friends on the sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan and enjoying a relaxing breakfast without any sense of rush. One reason I like watching your videos of places I have been to is that it makes me excited to go back someday and to notice the things I didn't the first time around--because you do a great job of pointing out all the different plants, animals, and just downright cool things that might go unnoticed. Awesome content!

Binge watching your vids from the beginning. Love your work. Being present, and“...neither clinging to the good part, nor resisting the bad...” - that’s how to have peace, joy and happiness. How did you young whippersnappers get so wise so young? It took me 53 miserable years to learn that. Glad you already know it and are sharing that knowledge with others. Come hiking and camping in Pennsylvania with me. : )

I happened upon this video when searching for some Michigan wilderness. I lived in MI for 51 years then last year moved to FL. There's not much wilderness in Key West and I long for and miss Michigan's beauty so much! I have to tell you that I think you're all amazing and have been watching your videos obsessively for 3 days now. I feel as if I've gotten my nature fix through watching your adventures. I love that you're passionate and knowledgeable about nature. Thank you so much for bringing back my peace of mind and reminding me how incredibly awesome mother nature is!!!

+trish mcintosh Thank you so much for the kind words, and really glad you enjoy the videos and the music. Michigan is in a lot of ways the catalyst for the channel. Did this hike, 3 nights four days, this past Memorial weekend. The place really does feel special, as soon as you get there. If you love history, the nostalgia of the place is almost tangible. The old logging trucks, barns, ruins, houses; it really makes you try and visualize how life played out there almost a hundred years ago. The old cemetery, even, gives off an odd, tranquil feeling. Add that to the fact that you're on an island in the middle of Lake Michigan away from civilization, living out of a pack, and it's quite the experience. There are so many places in the world to see, but this one I'd definitely love to see again. Nice video!

Thanks for another great episode. I've seen a few of your newer ones over the years but I finally decided to start from the beginning. I like all your music but I especially enjoy your theme song (and the quieted down version in this episode or part 1 (I forget) and Bryan's guitar solo in one of your past episodes, the one he soloed on in a short. I wasn't able to understand some of your plant identifications, so maybe you could speak a little slower and more distinctly for we old folk? I found the sorrel(?), mushrooms, and garlicky thing most interesting, although I didn't understand what you called the garlicky thing. I've had wild onions before when I've been out hiking on the trails and some kind of wild berries, but I don't remember much else. LOL It's good that you all have so much in common and can enjoy these forays out into the wilds together and share them with everyone. There must be a back story to all this which I'd love to hear. Unfortunately, the interview you posted a bit ago is no longer available.

Personally it's hard to choose because both islands are quite amazing. If you ever visit South Manitou you HAVE to go to the west side where the sand dunes are. It's a bit of a hike to get up to the top but totally worth it because you can see so much from where you're standing. My friend and I went last month and saw a part of Door County in Wisconsin from the far western point of the island.

South Manitou has cooler landmarks to see. Such as some ridiculously huge old growth cedars, better shipwrecks and historic buildings, and more impressive dunes than north manitou. But just as a heads up, I think you have to camp in designated camp sites only, which are usually pretty populated during the summer and that doesn't seem like your style. North allows you to feel a lot more isolated from urban life, especially when you camp on the western side of the island where you can't see any mainland or other islands and can just see the open lake.

To tell you the truth we've only camped at a campsite once while we were there (in this episode actually) and it was pretty crowded. If you can't get into the back country, my personal recommendation would actually be to rent a small cabin. That's more or less what we used to do and I have such good memories for that. Brilliant hack with the keychain on your cup/cook pot. I'm going to do that when I get home. How did you get to know so many different plants and vegetation? Did you take classes? Internet searches? It's fascinating, but I'd love to know where to start. Thanks again.
@AdventureArchives9 жыл бұрын
Jim Maltese Yeah, that ring made it so much more useful. The rubber handle kept oozing away. Do you have the same/similar cooking pot? I started by ID'ing trees, then I took a class which went over a few local wildflowers. But reddit has a great subreddit called "whatsthisplant" where people help you ID plants. So whenever I hike, I try photographing things I don't know and IDing them via the internet. Thanks! -Andrew

I'm still tweaking my day pack a bit. I actually just bought a knock-off solo stove that fits inside a larger pot, so I'm looking forward to playing with that. That's great advice on the plant IDs, and makes total sense. Slow and steady learning and adding to the knowledge arsenal. I appreciate the "food reviews" you guys give for the foraged plants. I'm a little nervous to try it on my own because there are so many plants that look similar that may be dangerous, so I'm thinking going out with someone who could say "Eat this not that" would be the way to go. Thank you again. Best, Jim

Awesome video! Was someone else with you? At one point all three of you are walking toward the camera....and someone else is holding it and waking backwards I think. Do people still live on this island or are all of those houses abandoned? Thanks again for the info and videos!

Brian Lucas It was a bear! Naw, yeah someone did come with us but didn't wanna be on camera. It's funny, I think you're the first person to notice that. Yeah actually, I think the park ranger we talked to said there was still one person who lived on the island, but all the other houses are abandoned and maintained by the park. I think South Manitou Island has more people living on it though. Thanks for watching!

when did you do this? Did you make it to the west side? I was just there this past summer with my boat taking another family with there kids also that made 8 people and made 7 t0 8 mile hikes with four younger kids. Would have like to stay longer, Great Video

bigblockcutlass123 This was July of 2014. Unfortunately we didn't make it all the way to the west side, but we definitely want to go back and explore more some day. Sounds fun, how did that trip turn out? Were you mostly on the west side? I wish we could've stayed longer too. Thanks much for watching!

I was there First weekend August 2014. We stayed at the Marina there a boat over to the north island one day and the South Island the next day. We hiked about 7 miles on each island. I would say the south Island has better site's to see. The west side of the South island is really cool. Also the water was flat so we seen about four ship wrecks that weekend. I have some video's posted from about three years ago when we made that trip then. I am poor at the making video's so I kinda gave up on that and just stuck to the picture's.

Welp, Red River Gorge part 2 for my 10 year old daughter looks like a wash for this weekend. As a matter of fact (and Murphys law for that matter), most of Appalachia from Kentucky through WV and western VA looks wet! Need some advice, and taking into consideration this is peak tourist season, how hard and what do you think likelihood of putting together a couple days up here at Sleeping Bear Dunes would be? Ferry passes, backcountry passes? ANY guidance would be much appreciated. I'm hitting Internet hard now to try and make it happen as north looks like only dry place in the next few days! Thanks fellas!

BuckeyeHiker I'll let Bryan know to answer this one, because he's the one who planned all the ferry stuff, but I don't remember it being too much trouble. We actually just got back from RRG, and it was a great time. Unfortunately, we didn't get to check out the Clifty Wilderness like you had suggested before (some of our alternative routes included it), just because of how much distance we'd have to cover in one weekend while filming (we wanted to get the wilderness are and the main part of the park). -Andrew

BuckeyeHiker Hey, sorry to hear about RRG, yeah the weather has been pretty wet lately! We went to sleeping bear the same time (early july). Some of the more popular camp grounds like the Platte River might be full, so be sure to check those out if you want to stay at a camp ground. I'd avoid any heavily wooded campgrounds (like the one in our video) because they are full of mosquitos for sure this time of year. Ferry passes were easy to obtain and can be bought online. Got our passes from manitoutransit.com/ Just be sure to check and double check the times and dates the ferry leaves because they only make a few trips a day to north/south manitou. In fact, that manitou ferry website has a lot of information about camping on the manitou islands so i'd look around on that site. Here is some information about reserving / fees for camping: www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/campingfees.htm South Manitou is only campground camping. North Manitou has one campground, but allows backpacking/camping anywhere. BRING BUG SPRAY! :) ~Bryan

Man, thank you guys for getting back so quick last night! Between the drive, and logistics (esp during busy season weekend) we took today off...... and are leaving tomorrow for the ol' usual backup, Grayson Highlands! Short drive, know my way around, and always fun. There's a 40% chance of rain tomorrow down there but like I tell my daughter, hopefully that keep at least 40% of the people away and we will have more of the trail to ourselves! Again, THANK YOU fellas so much for the info, everything was closed when I was calling up there last evening and thought of your guys' trip. Happy Adventures!!!!!!
