I lived in Jamaica Queens close to brick town. Anyone from Queens knows that's a rough area. Every morning I grabbed my sidewalk broom and swept the gutters. Nobody paid me. After 3 months , other streets followed suit and cleaned their block. People behave differently when someone else shows everyone they give a damn about where they live.

I love Philly and you get much of the thrill and excitement of NYC here for half the cost. The culture and food here is amazing too. It's a tough city but it's a city of tough love. Things are rapidly changing with gentrification around Temple University and Kensington and the clash of rich people with the drug dealers and dopeheads is interesting.

Just a few observations after watching quite a few of your videos. 1 - Don't litter 2 - Clean your own sidewalk, because some scumbags always litter. 3 - Not everybody wants to hear YOUR music all day long. 4 - Have some common courtesy and get out of the street so cars can go through. 5 - Teach your children some respect, and tell them what morals are. Great vids Chuck!

Angela Perez I live in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Most people afford living in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco and come to work to Guadalajara, all because the affordable houses are in there (Tlajomulco). They don’t spend a lot of money in cars, they take a bus and come to the city. My nieces live in Tlajomulco and study in front of my house that is the closest Guadalajara can be of Tlajomulco and it takes them one hour and a half when there’s no traffic and it can take more in mornings and nights with traffic. Now imagine someone who works or studies even farer. So don’t come and tell me I don’t know how it is because I see it everyday with family members and coworkers. They are spending money in a stupid way, that’s why they are like that.

This reminds me of what the Bronx looked like back in the 80's when I was a kid. When visiting family in Philadelphia as a child, I loved walking down the quiet streets and seeing these homes; My paternal grandmother had a detached home and had beautiful grape vines growing all around the top heading of her house. It is so very sad to see this blithe. Why can't the state sell these homes for like $1 and offer grants to home owners to revitalize these neighborhoods? I'm also upset to see the few people who live in the community allow garbage and filth to just sit on the streets making it a breeding ground for vermin. Pick up a damn broom and sweep your sidewalk!! A neighborhood can't run itself down only the people who live in it do. Thanks for sharing the video. Peace and love~~!!

I got lost on foot about 15 years ago in some place just off Fairmont Park. I believe it was Strawberry Mansion -- one of the scariest moments of my life. Some guy dressed just like a pimp (maybe he was one) was following me, asking questions. Some of the downtrodden areas have gentrified. Others, like Strawberry Mansion, are apparently at the early stages of gentrification and reinvestment. The houses might be beat up, but the location is good in a lot of these areas.

10:20 is the (new) Laundromat I used to go to when our washer broke. This was my block - to the right on 18th st. It totally breaks my heart to see what the neighborhood has become. Totally different from when I was a child growing up. Things had just started getting bad before I left almost 40 years ago, as home owners died and their children move away. HUD took over and everything went downhill. If people can't find decent jobs, they don't make money to put into the neighborhood - and the city couldn't care less.

I noticed that too. Plus I also own a nice car yet live in the ghetto in my area lol. But in all honesty, a majority of the cars parked on the sides are priced well below $5k retail, most below $3k private party value. Easily affordable to anyone who receives government benefits, child support, yearly child income tax credits, etc. Rent and drugs being cheap and easily obtained is the icing on the cake to these people. Its all one gigantic financial game going on back and forth between the poor and the government.

This clip showcases the extent of illegal dumping in an urban area, and how the debris can persist when it is not put out properly for pick up and disposal (4:26). Yet, it also highlights how dwellers can keep their frontage remarkably clean and tidy looking (7:57) by putting in a little effort. This might be the "extremes" that your title alludes to. I very much see the decay in the neglected areas, but I also see a little rejuvenation, if not persistence, in an otherwise difficult living situation. Thanks Charlie, for the clip.

These are parts where you learn survival, how to love, how to get over heart break, how to cook, how to build from the ground up, how to get money, how to drive, there's so much "foundation" in the hood, MUCH more than any text book could ever teach you. Of course book smarts is important, but it's something about the lessons you learn in the hood that you can take with you anywhere.

@@DontchaHateDatyeah the other person is correct. It's nothing in North Philly and that street smart stuff is the exact reason why pple move out the hood and move into better neighborhoods. Book smarts is more superior than streets smarts. You only need street smarts for the streets. I grew up in Mt. Airy back in 1990- 2012 and any issues that happened in Mt. Airy Was from pple breaking into houses from the hood and coming into the better neighborhoods. I wouldn't dare litter in front of my home. You just didn't do that, bc its brung down your property value and it was a nasty/dirty thing. Pple took pride in their homes in Mt. Airy. I only needed to be street smart when I stepped out of my neighborhood to keep up with THE REAL STREET PPLE, WHO WOULD ALWAYS PULL A FAST ONE ME.

I know. They must be old de-commissioned parking meters from a time when the area was richer and more urban...

I believe they were hitching posts. Some of those streets look like they were once made of cobblestones but have since been paved over. Philly goes waaay back to Colonial times.

Thank you Pam Hunsinger! Philadelphia really isn’t a bad place. We left NYC , I was about five and then taken away in 1972 to Oregon I was only 17. You can only imagine. Like your comment

This is an example ( and you have shown us others) of how your surroundings and immediate environment can affect your mind, etc... What I don't understand is out of all the people in these hoods,no clean days seems to be a high priority. You don't need so called white people or any one else for that matter for this to happen.

I'm from South Africa and it's strange for me to see streets so empty. Like no kids playing in the streets nothing you just see a person every couple of blocks. It's like people don't go outside.

@@larrywhitt9089 Philly parking authority has a bad reputation. They ticket you and tow you at the drop of a hat, the employees at the office don't care about helping you either. If you have Jersey plates, they'll find any excuse they can to ticket you. I got a ticket because an inch of my car was in a cross walk and another for parking in front of a hydrant that was broken
