Dear Daphne, My husband and I have followed your entire tour from the North Sea to the Adriatic with all episodes. We live in northern Germany and it is interesting to see the impressions of Germany in particular captured and described from your perspective. We especially like your video style, which is confident and routine. Your videos are very well photographed and commented. My husband watches a lot of cycling travel videos and very few are as professionally done as yours. We love Frank's distinctive one-word sentences and your English pronunciation of German place names. We have cycled parts of your route ourselves, but 25 years ago. It's nice to see a lot of it again now. We admire that you dare to do such trips without an e-bike at your age. Respect! Interested to know how much time you needed to plan the cycling trip? Keep doing such wonderful tours and let us share them with you on video. We will remain your fans. Stay healthy and best regards Jana and Arik

Hello Jana and Arik, thank you so much for your lovely comments. We're delighted that you were able to follow along on this ride with us and probably see many familiar places. My mispronunciation must give you a few laughs! Glad to hear the video is coming across well as I'm not exactly very experienced at creating them, but I do enjoy making them. It's funny, others have commented on Frank's few words, but let me tell you he has lots to say away from the camera!! We had originally planned to do this trip in 2020 but had to postpone due to the pandemic. So we had plenty of time to read up on the route, get any necessary maps and figure out exact distances so we could gauge how many days to allow, as we booked a return flight. Apart from our initial hotel in Amsterdam, we didn't make any accommodation bookings in advance, so that part was easy. Sending you both warmest wishes from Canada.

Hi Daphne and Frank, greetings from Cork in Ireland. Finished my solo journey from Basel to Amsterdam. The weather wasn’t as good as the weather you had in your trip but had a fantastic time meeting some wonderful people along the way. I had a lovely stop In Bacharach and actually stayed 2 nights. It took me around 17 days going at a leisurely pace. Took your advice on campsites and really enjoyed 1000 mile camping in Remagen. I have a huge interest in history so soaked it all up. My wife Rena joined me in Amsterdam which was great. Again thanks for your fantastic videos, they were a huge help. Planning my next trip to Brittany in 2025 to celebrate my 70th birthday. Look forward to hearing more of your travels Liam

Thank you for putting what must be a great deal of effort into your videos, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching this series and look forward to your future adventures. Thanks Daphne and Frank, I really enjoyed all ten episodes of this fantastic series, way to go! I was attracted to your videos because I have ridden a number of times in the Netherlands, and also along the Rhine from Mainz to Dusseldorf. My NL trips have mainly been relatively short day or so trips from Amsterdam. My German trip was along the path that hugs the Rhine over the course of five days, with short forays into some towns and cities along the way. I was thinking of maybe simply following the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to Rotterdam and the North Sea and touring Zealand and the coast, but will now think more about ranging farther afield now that I see how it can be done! Cheers, and safe travels!

Thank you so much for your wonderful compliments! It's great to know that the videos are providing useful information as well as being at least a little bit entertaining! Video-making is very much a new learning process for me. When we started touring a few years ago, of course it never crossed my mind that I'd want to make videos. So gradually I've started making more effort to record footage on the road. We recently got a GoPro hero 10 which is a game changer for me. The images are so amazingly stable even when I'm holding it in my hand and moving it around. Most of the time I'm just using a GoPro "Shorty" small extender handle/tripod and holding it in one hand as I cycle. That serves as a sort of selfie-stick as well. Occasionally I'll use a chest harness thing if I know I need two hands on the handlebars (in busy traffic, tricky terrain or going down a long hill). I do have an attachment accessory on my helmet too, but haven't used that as much lately. I us a noise canceling wind shield (a foam cover) to help reduce wind noise while riding, and carry with me a couple of spare batteries and several extra sd cards (mine are 128GB). For the last 2 month trip, I used 3 of those sd cards, although I think I had 5. Will use more space in future as I realize I should be shotting at a higher resolution. Never really needed more than 2 batteries per day though. We did also use our phones for some still shots and short videos (we happen to have Pixel phones - not the latest models). I did have a small Canon G7X camera with me on the 2022 trip as well, used that for some off-the-bike shots sometimes. I also have a small gorilla-type tripod which can be used with either camera and phones. They're great for attaching to tree branches, posts or anything really. Turns out so far I haven't needed anything extra for data storage as I had enough sd cards. But I had purchased a solid state drive (SanDisk 1TB extreme portable SSD), a tiny compact thing in case I needed it. Would probably have needed to take my sd cards to a camera shop, or borrow a computer/laptop, to use that, as I don't carry a laptop on tour. All my editing is done with Adobe Premier Elements, but there are many different softwares out there. I taught myself using KZbin tutorials, etc (am am still learning!) Hope I've answered most of your questions. Have fun planning your next trip!

@@daphnebehindbars Thank you very much for sharing your equipment and process. Again I'll say it's the person's talent and passion above equipment, and the fact that you are able to produce such beautiful results with fairly simple and inexpensive equipment is a testament to that. You're an amazing storyteller and I sincerely appreciate you taking us along. Wanted to ask: 1) Do you think a gimbal selfie stick would improve your results? (Does your GoPro shorty selfie stick provide any stabilization, or is all stabilization provided by the GoPro? I've been wondering if a gimbal selfie stick tripod is needed and worthwhile). 2) Beyond shooting at a higher resolution as you suggested, which 1-2 other equipment changes do you think would benefit you the most?
@daphnebehindbars
@daphnebehindbars 10 ай бұрын
The GoPro provides the stabilization - it is an option that you can turn on or off, but I would suggest leaving it on all the time. Personally I don't feel I need to add a gimble for my purposes. And with practice, one gets better at "panning" the camera smoothly - the GoPro takes care of removing the bumps and jerky movements. Sometimes it would be useful to have a full-size tripod so you have more options for positioning the shots. But personally I'm going to stick with my gorilla-type small tripod because it's light and compact when I'm on the bike, and you can get creative by attaching it to trees or fences. The one thing I'd love to add to my arsenal is a drone! That would be fun for getting different perspectives on the landscape. But I'm sure I'd crash it or lose it! But maybe one day.....
@leigha6275
@leigha6275 10 ай бұрын
@@daphnebehindbars Thank you, I'm pleasantly surprised the GoPro stabilization is that good - and I'd guess it's similar in the competing action cameras. With your results I'd agree you don't need a gimbal (there's a travel channel I think called Suitcase Monkey/s and all their travel videos are filmed on iphone and I think without a gimbal, with hand panning and in-phone stabilization). While I've not piloted a drone yet myself, I have friends who have, and I think with a little practice at home and not taking chances with weather conditions and terrain (avoiding high winds, long distances over water, cliffs), I think you'd do very well with one.

Wow, what a wonderful compliment, thank you Alain! We're delighted that you enjoyed our journey. Of course for this trip, because we used parts of a few different routes, we had several different guidebooks and maps. If you wouldn't mind going back and looking at the description blurbs of Episodes 1, 5 and 10 you will find, under "resources", the names of the maps and guides we used for EV15, EV 6 and the Alpe Adria Radweg. Hope that helps 😊

So glad you liked the videos. The map book Alpe Adria Radweg is published by Bikeline and can be purchased on Amazon. So far it's only in German, but the maps have a key in English as well as German and French. We wish you a great ride!
