What do you do with your gear when doing activities off the bike?
@daphnebehindbars5 күн бұрын
We generally leave the panniers on the locked bikes when going grocery shopping or visiting a museum/chateau etc, just bringing our valuables with us. If we're spending a whole day exploring a town, we try to stay somewhere that the bikes can be stored somewhere more secure. For example when we visited Amboise and stayed 2 nights, we booked a lockable tented cabin in the campground where we were able to put our bikes inside. We do have little cable locks attaching our panniers to the bikes, so someone can't just lift the panniers off - a small deterrent.

Daphne - thanks for sharing these super videos. They provided me with inspiration and guidance to tackle EV15 myself from Rotterdam to Basel in 2023, when I cycled from my home in Yorkshire, UK to Basel, Switzerland where my wife works. It made a great change from the regular flights by easyJet, although I have to say it cost a lot more! So pleased that I tackled the challenge and now I am re-watching your videos to remind me of my own journey. Thank you for re-kindling my love of cycling.

Hi Daphne and Frank, greetings from Cork in Ireland. Finished my solo journey from Basel to Amsterdam. The weather wasn’t as good as the weather you had in your trip but had a fantastic time meeting some wonderful people along the way. I had a lovely stop In Bacharach and actually stayed 2 nights. It took me around 17 days going at a leisurely pace. Took your advice on campsites and really enjoyed 1000 mile camping in Remagen. I have a huge interest in history so soaked it all up. My wife Rena joined me in Amsterdam which was great. Again thanks for your fantastic videos, they were a huge help. Planning my next trip to Brittany in 2025 to celebrate my 70th birthday. Look forward to hearing more of your travels Liam

Great to hear you got more inspiration from the video! Yes, you certainly do have a lot further to travel than we do to get to these European cycling routes, but the riding is so appealing there, isn't it! We haven't cycled in Belgium yet, but that does sound great. Good luck planning you next trip 😄

Could this route be ridden on a vtavel bike?
@daphnebehindbarsАй бұрын
If you mean a gravel bike, I have no personal experience riding gravel bikes, but from what I've seen on videos, people ride them on this type of trail. As I mentioned in the video, there's a couple of rough, rocky spots, but mostly it was pretty smooth when we did it.
@DanaBarakauskasАй бұрын
What type of bikes did you use for this adventure?

We were riding our full suspension mountain bikes. However, you could ride it on a gravel bike or hardtail, at least based on trail conditions when we did it.

Great video. I want to thank you for showing that it IS possible for all groups (motorized and otherwise) to share and enjoy this trail. A lot of other bikers look down on the moto-riders...especially along the KVR. We hope to travel this exact section in June of this year. We already cycled a few km's from Christina Lake northwards, but got turned back by the rains...hoping to complete the entire trip to Castlegar and back!

Nice route, I have noticed that Netherlands was more easy to ride than the Germany part, Correct?
@daphnebehindbars5 ай бұрын
Hi Anjo, if you mean in terms of flat terrain, yes the Netherlands is easy riding. However, the rest of the Rhine route in Germany/Switzerland as far as Lake Constance is also pretty flat, since it's generally along or close to the river. It's more hilly between Lake Constance (Bodensee) and the Danube, but then quite flat along the Danube to Passau. We got into more hills in Austria. In terms of route-finding, the Netherlands section was straight-forward as other than Rotterdam, it doesn't go through any big cities. Some sections in Germany were more confusing through the bigger cities. Of course cyclists using gpx devices wouldn'y find that a problem. In terms of finding campgrounds, it was quite easy in the Netherlands, not so easy in the industrial part of the Rhine in Germany (Wesel to Cologne), easy in France and Austria, and they weren't as plentiful in Italy. Pathways and road surfaces were good throughout our route for the most part. That's a long answer to a short question! But I wasn't exactly sure what you meant
