They're going to tax the elderly until the only thing they can afford is a nursing facility; and they'll have to sign over their remaining assets to the facility to remain in said facility. WOW. What a way to treat our predecessors.

It's good. It just means you might have to move from where you live. In this case, this man can simply sell his house, take the money and go live somewhere cheaper. People need to remember, you don't have to stay in an expensive city. You don't even have to stay in the US. He has no problems.

Yeah because the US government should support policies that encourage it’s citizens to leave. Not only is that highly ethical it’s also a great plan for the economy; no way is China going to overtake us with that genius plan in place. You should get a job at the White House - the only qualification you need is a rich daddy and the ability to completely deny reality.

No State income tax = 2% property tax. The 2.5% mortgages resulted huge increase of home values. In 2017 my rentals appraised at $120K, 2022 it's now $260K. Going from $2400 to $5200 for Property Tax = a big rent increase to stay whole as a landlord. Big question to ask the County Tax Assessor, you got twice as much money from previous years - what are you going to do with it? Hopefully it's not burning a hole in the County's pocket.

Of course this is absurd propaganda. Yes, your property value goes up, but so do your property taxes. They will only keep going up and up until you are forced to leave your house because there's no feasible way you can even pay it. People in San Francisco were paying millions of dollars in property taxes whereas they originally bought their house for prices like that Texas home. There was a time where working class and middle class people could afford to live in every single state. This is what happened iN NYC, Boston, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and is now happening in Miami. This is why you need to care about affordable housing. It literally destroys the entire local economy. Elderly lose their homes and can't afford apartments or elderly housing facilities. Young adults can't afford to buy houses or condos and are forced to rent with roommates. The average salary for a two income family is 1300-1400 a month and the average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment is 1800. You're supposed to pay 1/3rd of your income towards housing/rent. It is NOT an option in many cases. If you don't make 3x that amount in Boston, most landlords will literally throw out your application. It's just getting worse and worse. I live in the Boston area. It used to be that if you lived outside of the Boston area, outside of the T and commuter rail, then you could find affordable housing easily. Now, all of eastern MA is as expensive as living in the Boston area. This happened in the short span of 1-2 years. Look at the big cities like Boston, NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, etc...and this is a glimpse into your future. These real estate prices are out of control and there is no practical way of solving this issue. These people are over inflating the value of property in this country. I don't know where all of these rich people are supposed to come from when you consider all of our money is going to spent on housing.

@@malcolmx61 No. The problem is they never plan for being old when they're young. For instance, I'm 38 and my funeral is already taken care of. Meaning I will not leave a funeral death for my family. I don't have plans on retiring either. Cutting back, yes while having a side hustle. With work, if I become sick or injured the disability I've been paying for will be paying my paychecks for a year without working. Then if I become injured or ill and can no longer work, my job place will still be paying my paycheck as long as they are still operational. Thing is, I'm guaranteed an income no matter what happens. Meaning I can afford to pay taxes since everything else is already taken care of. In 5 more years, I'll only be working for health insurance, vehicle maintenance, rainy day fund and paying land tax. Work will even be having me work 4 days on and 3 days off just to save up on gas for myself. Too many people did I know who made poor decisions and didn't think for the long haul. Years before I retired in 2019 (I was 68), I bought partially wooded acreage in a rural area (I was raised in the country and love it), in northern MI, with a mobile home (had a standing seam metal roof, central air, 3-year-old furnace, 1 year old hot water heater when purchased) in great condition and a 25x50 insulated pole barn, with its own breaker box, on it (it was an estate, on the market 1 day with multiple offers, but I was the only one with cash). Took me 4 years to find the right property that met all my criteria: Rural (not enough population, or amenities in the area, for any business to want to develop), demographics, in the price range of 50-60k, so I could pay cash (this was before property values went insane), garage/pole barn, partially wooded, no less than 4 acres (in case someone who owns/inherits land adjacent to my property decided to split up their acreage and parcel it out, it wouldn't affect my quality of life), well and septic, good condition and low taxes. I stopped looking for a site build house, as most acreage with a house on it were either in bad condition, too big, too old, or too expensive. My property taxes here are $600. a year and I sold my site-built house in the city, in 2020. Every decision I made regarding my new home was laser focused on living as far beneath my retirement means as I could, no debt, good quality of life and having the ability to afford future increases in utilities, insurance and taxes, etc., without worry and I believe I've accomplished that.

add solar panels if your area gets enough sunlight. With electricity always going up the power you supply to the grid from the panels will be a fixed cost and last 20 years at high output and then another 10-20 years at a lower output. Your electricity bill basically never changes if you size the system correctly. Here in South Carolina it repays itself in 10 years so the next 10 years is free and time after that will gradually taper off to 0-25% needing to be paid for as the panels loose efficiency. This is nothing new. I remember my dad telling me that the big problem when you retire is the fact that you still have to pay for stuff but now there's no paycheck to pay for it all. Insurance, utilities, repairs, food, gas, etc still has to be purchased. Just because you stop working doesn't mean all the expenses stop as well. I remember seeing homes falling apart and hearing that the little old lady simply didn't have the money to fix anything. She had enough to pay her taxes, enough to pay for electricity and a little bit of food and young/stupid me would think "how expensive can that be? And she owns the house, so what taxes does she have to pay?" Yeah, you have no idea until you join the adult world and suddenly see that NOTHING is free. Our goal is to have our house paid off and enough money saved to stay in it plus maintain it. Just THAT is a scary high number!

@@byronbuck1762 but even claiming the value went up because more people want to buy homes is a lie in reality. It's the same home that depreciates year after year and even in a hot market no one is going to give you more for your home unless you sink 50 to 100k in updates otherwise your going to get the lower offer of what your home is really worth. My home the seller listed for 265k in a hot market. The home needed a lot of updates. I offered 180k and she took it because she knew that's all it was worth before updates. No way would I had bought it for what the county said it was worth. After buying I protested the tax amount and they lowered the tax to reflect a 180k price. Government and capitalism are sometimes just taking advantage of people. And that's also the reason the elderly lady sold her home. She said taxes on the home were getting unreasonably high for her fixed income.

@@benproffitt5957 nonsense. Property values rise and fall based on a number of factors but in this market it’s been demand over supply. It affects all properties, only varying at the margin based on conditions and updates. Recently many homes priced well are snapped up regardless of condition by investors and cash buyers sight unseen. In other cases, buyers are waiving inspections and contingencies. We may see this reverse some now with higher interest rates but reality is values rise even if you do little to the house but maintain it. I’ve seen this firsthand with my three houses in three different states. One tripled in value in ten years, one doubled in five and the third doubled in one year. The structure might depreciate - but with rising construction costs they haven’t but the lot just escalates.

Back home (in Vermont) my brother put his condo on the market (5/2022). This is what happened to CA in the 1970s. People were being taxed right out of their homes. The result of it was the State Law ( still referred to as) Proposition 13 which limits assessments to a certain yearly percentage. Periodically, attempts are made to overturn it which would be a disaster for homeowners should it happen. The law was the result of a Republican led state referendum spearheaded by Howard Jarvis. It's the only piece of Republican legislation that Democrats like because it saves them money.

@@networth00 Its exactly the same in the UK. It covers police, fire, road maintenance, local schools, local park maintenance, bin collection and even homelessness. We call it council tax. So if your home was worth 300k in 1991 and it's now worth 3,000,000 your still in the same band paying the same (apart from the 3-4% inflation)

Doubled our taxes. With stupid things like, we are now taxing porches. Land value went up, out of 50 examples from my neighborhood and surrounding area all said the value for my lot was $30k, but 1 guy, 1 guy got 50k, so mine went up. Freezing them at 65 does no good, if they are already a struggle when your working full time. I think they should drop the ISD portion of the property tax assessment. My kids have been grown for over 20 years. Plus I paid double. I worked two jobs and so did my husband to put our kids in catholic school, while still paying ISD taxes. I understand the need for taxes to pay for roads, fire, police, etc. but when exactly do I get to not worry about loosing my hone and being out in the street.
