North Yorkshire Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala 2017

The annual steam gala at the North Yorkshire Moors railway was held between September 29th. - October 1st. 2017. I visited on the Friday and Saturday with mixed weather conditions from steady drizzle to some patches of sunshine. Visiting locos included Panniers 1501 and 7714 from the Severn Valley Railway and large Prairie No.5199 from the Llangollen Railway. Locos are seen at the following locations;
5199 - Beck Hole, Water Ark, Darnholme and Moorgates
1501 - Esk Valley, piloting 45212
7714 and 1501 - Beck Hole
7714 and 5199 - Water Ark
7714 - Darnholme and Goathland with a photo charter organised by Matt Fisher
61264 - Water Ark and Darnholme
76079 - Water Ark and Moorgates
80136 - Water Ark
45212 - Water Ark
44806 - Water Ark, banked by 80136
926 'Repton' - Esk Valley, Beck Hole and Moorgates

Thank you, it's probably one of the best lines for all out action even when there isn't a gala on. Western engines have always looked good at the Moors

Absolutely superb Austin, I love this line, having walked every inch from Grosmont to Pickering over the years...another great Gala from the NYMR with plenty of variety of both trains and locomotive types, all captured to perfection despite the unpredictable weather conditions....Bob

Thanks Bob, my only regret is that they no longer have a spring gala so by autumn everywhere is a little overgrown. Despite some poor weather it was an enjoyable gala as expected from the NYMR

Fantastic video, the NYMR never disappoint. Loved the first few shots of 5199 powering it up the gradients. What a sound!!

What a superb combination of hard-working steam and autumn colours, Austin! The sounds were extra-special at 03:00, 13:15, 17:45 and 19:40. Thanks Bob, 'Repton' has become a firm favourite of mine and she certainly coped very well with the 1 in 49 at the NYMR. I always look forward to visiting the railway as you always know the locos are going to be working hard

Thanks, yes 1501 with 45212. I was forced to shoot against the (unexpected!) sun as there was no place to park down at the bottom of the hill at Esk Valley

Do these firemen not realize that over-stoking an engine like much here, results in lousy combustion efficiency, and massive air pollution? Do they find thick black smoke somehow attractive? Really detracts, IMO.

I tend to agree though I've seen far worse in the earlier days of preservation. I think the problem is that these firemen are not doing it every working day of their lives and have little chance to practise their art. It takes a bit of experience, confidence and expertise to run with a thin hot fire. At least this line doesn't seem to attract the "superb clag" kindergarten mob.

@@Rosie6857 if you had a thin hot fire on this line especially up the 1 in 49 gradient you wouldn't get very far and that's why they are firing with a deeper fire but keeping pressure at the same time. You can have a slightly deeper fire but still not over fire. It's a fine line but durable
