I lived in northampton from 1997 to 1999. there were many clubs and pubs, Visage, Wig and pen, chicago rock cafe... in 1999 I returned to Spain but the 3 years I spent in northampton were very good, I worked at the stakis casino for almost 2 years and i lived on palmerton road. I walked home and from work and never had a problem. unfortunately Northampton is no longer what it used to be.

I was born in Northampton in the 50s, Spencer Estate. - Great time in my youth in the bars of the town. In the late 90s we opened a Health Food shop in The Grosvenor Centre called HEALTH QUEST which we ran for 14 years - We sold it in 2005. We moved to Dorset. We frequently come back to visit family and friends and often pop into the town to eat. Sadly like most towns its dying as more and more buy on the internet. 90% of my shopping is now online - So we can only blame ourselves for towns decline. The county of Northampton is on par with the Cotswolds.

Quite a number of things have happened, to cause the demise of so many of our towns and cities, 1. out of town retail parks with free parking, 2. The rise of the supermarkets, selling everything under one roof, with free parking, 3. Internet shopping, anything you want delivered to your door, 4. Mass immigration, bringing cheap labour, meaning lower wages and higher rents, causing more people with less to spend, 5. shops of foreign ownership, Euro Markets etc, takeaways, providing for people living in town HMO's, 6. Young people who've never experienced the town as it used to be, and could never afford the pub prices, on their zero hours job contracts. Basically the young don't have money anymore, and there's no reason to visit the town, older people who remember Northampton as it was, are horrified at what has happened to our once wonderful town, see nothing left to visit for.

The biggest problem is the old Bus Station was replaced with something totally inadequate. It should of been properly rebuilt on the former site. The grosvenor centre was connected to the Bus station and always had a steady influx of people. I can remember the centre of town absolutely heaving at weekends. The town centre has since been in steady decline as the main department stores close down. I've lost count of the number of times Northampton town centre has had taxpayer money to refurb Abington street or the Market square. Has it changed anything ? No. With the lack of high profile stores in the town, and a useless bus station travel hub, it's allowed places like Milton Keynes, Rushden Lakes, Northampton Riverside and even Weston Favell centre to thrive.

The town was so beautiful back then, just seems it has lost its sheen and town beauty has eoroded. Looks dull. I am living here and still enjoying the town. The Abington Street is dying now even more, I hope this will be reversed. But we can’t forget, it’s an old town and overpriced for the real value of the life there and overpriced old homes. English people will not live in town centre because the quality is too low. So in town you see the truth about citizens and low standard of life. If it was better, must be many decades before

I remember when I first started getting on a bus on my own at the age of 13 and going into town on a Saturday morning getting off outside John levers and walking up gold street that was so packed you had to walk in the road it was so busy.the market was huge and had ppl everywhere the Grosvenor centre was packed and it was a fantastic place to be.unfortunately too many foreigners, too many homeless and beggars, too much police cut backs council underfunding and the fact that as a country in general our English identity has gone and we have become a country of dickheads singing out when you visit our town centre.

I'll always have a fondness for Northampton and lived there until I moved in 1999. I still visit and if you look at different eyes you'll see a different story. Walk around Becketts park, around the Derngate. St Giles Street, Abington Park, Eastfield or get the bus out around the Shire... it's a beautiful place. You just have to know where to look. Sadly, yes lots of bad decisions have always been made by Northamptons councils and the internet has destroyed the shops. It could do with some artists taking it over, some greenery in the centre and some money spent on the people.

Just visit any small town of central or northern Italy to know what to aspire for. After living in central Europe, the UK now looks like a post-apocalyptic state, really. Btw, people in Italy, Austria etc. do also sometimes shop online(sometimes, because they are more conscious, care for the environment etc.) yet the streets of all cities are lively, bright, clean, beautiful! In general, it seems to me that the UK citizens are less educated than in Europe.

Always super busy, but everything was in the right place, could do your shopping in rain or shine, if it did rain, head into the grovsvenor center for a bit of indoor shopping, then head up past sainsburys to the indoor bus station, unique smell but wasnt really bad, wait inside away from any fumes, then straight onto your bus without even going outside, now its a shithole of a bus station, and to get to where I use to live you couldnt even use the bus station, would have to wait in drapery sucking in all those idling fumes. Hi, great video, yea this was pretty grim in truth but everything you said is true, this was a great town with a really lively town centre and good shops, everyone has their theory on why things have deteriorated so badly from the late 90s to now, I think that was the start, losing Woolworths and rent going up for business owners, the market is a shadow of its former glory, I remember when it was full with stalls from top to bottom, and the fish market was still in full swing, The council does not care, we have the worst council in the country I believe that’s official and it’s been continuously one of the worst performing councils for over a decade, yet nothing seems to change, standards have fallen, socially we’ve fallen, people aren’t as friendly as they used to be by and large, I wonder if that has crept into the youth culture, there may be other factors there, but if you speak to long serving cab drivers they can really tell you the extent of the problems we’re facing now, and yea as you say the homelessness was getting to a really dangerous level Thanks for taking the time to make this video, you have the pride and passion so few seem to have nowadays 👍🏻

The music scene in Northampton during the 1980's was bangin', live bands in just about every pub in town, and the venerable Roadmenders, of course... Empty shops are a fact of life in every town these days thanks to internet shopping. Once the bastion of the retail and service industries, our city & town centres are inexorably moving towards a new role as social and entertainment hubs. The urban retail sector is likely to survive, but in future it will err towards specialist vendors operating from small shops and market stalls. That's how I see it, anyhoo... 🖖

When you walk down a back street, I'm not sure what you were expecting? Go to places like Bradford, Burnley, Stoke on Trent, and you'd realise that there are PLENTY of worse towns and cities.

this wasnt the back streets, this was the main town centre, like this is the absolute centre of northampton

Young generation is different, less artificial and more clever. They will not live nightlife like wild, are more aware, plus town buildings are old. You had no war which would destroy them so English moved outside town centre to newest homes

NN isn't too bad compared to other places. I think what's gone wrong is the county lines gangs expanding away from London, not just NN. You could say the same for lots of places. It does however, seem to be the poorer towns in the UK where this happens, as the drug gangs know they'll have a captive audience. With NN though, you combine this with the greedy, self serving tory council who are unwilling to invest in this town. Just look at the Cobblers stadium for evidence of this, a huge fraud crime was committed by the local council & the police practically let them get away with it.

There's also a lot of rich people living on the outskirts of the town but still in NN postcode areas. It's the rich that are also massively fueling the county lines problem with their addiction to kokain.

Agree the Tory's need to go. But I love the town and always will, my family owned shoe factories in the county, I love the folk here, I love the character. Yes things in the centre of Northampton may not be the best any more but there are plenty of good nights out at other locations than in the centre. Most people wouldn't even bother with the centre now for a night out. Centres are degrading across the country anyway in a lot of small towns because people just don't look for their nights out there anymore. The internet has a lot to do with that and I don't really see that as a bad thing. If you just focus on the most obviously degraded parts of the town then you will obviously find a negative picture. Look for something good a bit off the beaten track and speak to people and you might find something positive. 16:37

Shops are closing everywhere not just Northampton. you actually missed out all the better bits.. St Giles, the cultural quarter, Derngate, the water front, Wellingborough rd. new Museum etc. Northampton has recovered really well from the online shopping boom and continues to do so. This vlog despite down playing Northampton, it still looked good and vibrant behind all your unfair doom mongering. Do another vlog highlighting all the projects that have been done or are soon to happen.
