I was so excited and happy to see that you’re documenting Stratford Square Mall again. I was feeling depressed on the month of April when the mall closed up in 4-21-24. This mall is one of the most beautiful architecturally designed and aesthetically pleasing mall I’ve ever seen. It’s so stunning with the wood panels, geometric shapes on the ceilings, the skylights, the wooden pillars and columns, that resemble giant mushroom trees. Just love it so much. The architecture here is one of a kind and not many malls were designed with all this wood, creating a forest like atmosphere. I am a life time subscriber of yours I’m forever grateful that you didn’t forsake documenting this mall after its closure. I was binge watching videos from different creators of this mall in April and May. So glad there are so many archive videos of this mall I can binge watch year after year. Thank you for the work you do in keeping us reminiscent of a glorious period of time spending it at our local malls. I also want to add I like the music you complemented with this video tour of an awesome mall. Peace my brother.

Had no idea this mall has gone under. I grew up in Hanover Park from '75 to '87 and this mall was our mall from the moment it opened until we moved to Downers Grove in 1987. We sometimes went to Woodfield Mall as well, but mostly to this one. Wow, spent so much time there as a kid. It's surreal to see it like this when I only remember it being full of people and stores and just full of life. Sad to see it like this. My mother taking us to this mall in the mid 80s was a big part of our childhood. It's hard to see something you had so many vibrant memories of just be dead now. Does anyone know how recently it shut down?

Reminds me of the renovation of our Eastland Mall opened same yr 1981. The exterior still looks the same as it did 43 yrs ago in Evansville, IN. It's still thriving more packed as Thanksgiving and Christmas comes. But I did notice some empty spaces. Sad about Stratford Square Mall in Chicago. Beautiful wooden accents.

I moved to Bloomingdale in the early 90's. But had been going to the theater's there since opening. I remember looking at the directory boards standing around the mall and thinking how impressive it was to have that many stores under one roof. Seeing those boards blank now is sad to say the least. The mall itself had a very comfy feel to it. It is very unlike most other malls. Even though I didn't go there very often the last 10 years or so. The mall was always clean and in very good condition. Once the larger 3 or 4 theaters were divided in over 20 very small theaters. We no longer cared to go there for movies. I'll miss it, even though I rarely went there. So many good memories!

One thing I always found peculiar about this mall, Woodfield and Fox Valley is the lack of grand entrances. Although Woodfield looks 50 years more modern the last time I visited and had restaurants on each entrances. There’s no main entrances. This mall was a little confusing and somewhat unorganized. The first time I visited this mall was almost 20 years ago and it had already started to show signs of its imminent death. The Burlington coat factory was at one end while Kohls was at a different end as well as Sears and you had to walk to get to one anchor passing by a lot of closed stores or locally owned stores that seemed out of place. The Burlington was way at one side of the mall that already had started looking dead while everything was happening at the other end where the FYE and food court where. The food court is small. Besides this it was a beautiful mall. But having the surrounding area grow and more shopping centers built around it finally was its undoing Plus having a Woodfield, Dundee mall, Fox Valley, Algonquin commons and an infinite amounts of strip malls everywhere didn’t help either, not even opening a Woodmans next to it.

The people who had fond memories of Stratford mall were gifted by the final closing day of the mall being made known publicly. My mall that I grew up with was the Cutler Ridge mall in south Florida and it was utterly destroyed by hurricane Andrew. When they rebuilt it the new mall looked nothing like before. They rebuilt it in a cheesy and cheap way and had none of its previous splendor. I wasn’t given a chance to go film or take pictures before it was destroyed. And to this day I can’t find any film clips or pictures of it on the internet before hurricane Andrew hit except a couple of blurry crappy black and white pictures that show a very tight small area. Basically useless. It makes me sad. So being able to look and reminisce and take one last recording of Stratford mall is truly a rare gift for those who had fond memories there.

It's fascinating to see that the country that popularized the mall is now the one that's losing them in such great numbers. I can't help but notice that US malls seem to focus almost exclusively on traditional fashion retail, whereas centres in Canada and elsewhere typically include grocery anchors with interior access, more entertainment options, and sometimes even a mixed residential/office component along major public transit corridors. I've wondered why there's such a disparity in design there, and if incorporating non-typical developments to a mall such as Stratford Square would have improved its foot traffic to a point where it could have continued to thrive.

See all those "walls" everywhere? Those all used to be store fronts. This mall was basically dying 25-30 years ago. It was a very slow painful death. When it was in it's peak years, this was a very beautiful mall with all the trees, vegetation and water. The end with the theaters and food court was always the hoppin' area. By the early 90's they were having occupancy issues. It was the beginning of the end. There was always empty store fronts. By the time the anchor stores closed one by one, the mall started to become a maze of walls and kiosks. Between the discount stores (Target, Walmart), and the advent of online shopping (Ebay, Amazon) it was just a matter of time before the final bell toll. They just couldn't develop the whole surrounding area into a huge shopping district like the Woodfield Mall area. They tried, it just never really took hold. Walmart, Target and Kmart all opened stores to the immediate south and west of the mall. The mall just couldnt compete. More discount retailers followed. The death clock started to speed up. The fact it made it to this year is remarkable in itself. Indoor malls were all the fad of the 70's and 80's. But in reality very unpratical from a business and customer standpoint. Rents were high, cost of goods were high to compensate. How much were you really going to buy? You were going to have to drag your bags all thru the mall, or keep going back and forth to your car. If you were parked far away, you weren't going that route too many times. So you parked by the end you were going to frequent the most. They were really great social hangouts for us teens (loved it), but we really didnt have loads of money falling out of our pockets. Lol, not really a good self sustaining business model if you ask me....
