I'm not Italian, but the north end was the first neighborhood I ever moved to when my family moved to Boston in the late '80s. Taking a walk in the north end is a nostalgic experience. I hope the people there continue to live there. We need to keep those real estate developers out, they completely ruined my town.

The Italian diaspora of the late 1800s to early 1900s saw many Italian families leave Southern Italy for North America namely Eastern Canada and the North Eastern United States. But did you know that the Millions of Southern Italians the majority migrated in Latin America? Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile received a lot of Italians but it's Argentina that received the most and many Argentinian are descended from these Italians with many having Italian last names.

My father grew up at 138 Prince St. in the North End in the 40's and 50's before joining the Air Force around 1960. In 2006 my company moved our headquarters from Dorchester to City Square in Charlestown. I fulfilled a lifelong dream when moved to 33 Sheafe St. in the North End to be close to work. Ms. Caroline Viscione at 4:51 of this video was my Landlady. It was one of the best times of my life living in one of the coolest neighborhoods anywhere amongst fellow Italian Americans. My father recently passed and watching this brought back so many great memories I have of him and of my childhood. I've lived in Las Vegas for the last 11 years. I cant wait to return home to visit sometime in the near future and take in all the sights, sounds, and smells of a neighborhood unlike any other.

My mother moved here in 1954 when she was 11 from Avellino. She was one of the last to go thru Ellis Island. She said the girls were brutal and would call her grease ball because she was off the boat. The girls would walk around in gangs and actually tried to steal her sisters dress off her body. My mother would have to fight 15 at a time. She said you couldn't back down because they would just get you the next day. As she grew older she grew fond of the place. But unless you were born there you had no friends.

Malta and Gozo were always part of Sicily, until they were stolen by the British. They were all Sicilians from different islands, just like we have Sicilians in Lampedusa, Pantelleria, the Eolie island chain, the Egadi island chain, etc. In fact, the Maltese language is a descendant of the old Siculo-Arabic with modern Sicilian, Italian, and English words added.

There was an Italian restaurant at the far end of Hanover Street that made the most delicious pizza 🍕 😋 that I'd occasionally get. I think Italians when they got here tied themselves to 2 things, 1) God and the Catholic Church and 2) Family. Those 2 things are what gave them solidarity to navigate in a USA that going back to the Know Nothing movement of the 19th century, was always anti-Catholic. So Italians while they may have butted heads with other Catholic Ethnic Groups, the Irish and the Polish by the 2nd generation, say just before WW2 became people that outside of the ethnic enclave, Italians associated with more. For 1 reason, Catholicism was a common thread that the Italians, Irish and Polish had in common. You can throw in the Bavarian South Germans as well. My ancestors immigrated to New Orleans between 1890 and 1905 and it was similar. Italians got along with the Irish, and in Louisiana the French, again given a common thread of the Catholic Faith. My grandparents saw the world through a certain prism. You were Italian or you were not. For those who were not Italian, an Irishmen, Frenchmen, Polish, etc would be called as such but with a little more familiarity, over time the ethnic distinctions with those groups became less as there was lots of marriages among those ethnic groups. Protestant Anglo-Scots, i.e WASP etc. were called "Americana", Jewish people were Jewish, Blacks were Blacks, Mexicans were Mexicans etc.
@Sean-jc6cu3 жыл бұрын
The same to can be said about black people. I grew up in an Irish Catholic household and my Dad condemned racism. When my parents divorced I moved down south with my mom. Long story short, I was not accepted by the black kids in a majority black school.
