Tadgh lost his father James this year after a long illness. Sometimes we forget our warrior heroes are also humans with lives outside of sport. James was a massively important member of New Ross Rugby Club in addition to his many contributions to his local community of Campile. Condolences to Tadgh, his brother Eoin and the whole family. Fair play to Tadgh for still performing to such a level in trying times.

As an IRISH RUGBY FAN I would nominate Portugal as the breath of fresh air award followed in the Southern Hemisphere by Uruguay......game of the tournament was Fiji vs Portugal.Iam looking back as a spectator now probably by New Zealand vs Ireland the final was for me a massive letdown but they usually are, moment of the World Cup the charge down of a lowly underated conversion South Africa won the World Cup there that first half the best 40 minutes ever seen for me....the future begins in just two months in the French Riveria ,France and Ireland have probably better teams now than in September, we will find out in July if South Africa stay No 1 with the two tests vs Ireland....and we will find out where New Zealand are too and so it goes on the road to Australia 🇦🇺 2027

NZ are in for some hard times. Rookie coaches, no depth in the halves or second row, a thin midfield, continual talent exodus from all levels of the game and a declining provincial competition recently ajudged "not fit for purpose" all add to up a team whose immediate prospects appear bleak to say the least. The England series in June will provide a very interesting marker.

Would put Johnny sexton in ahead of Finn Russell personally. I think that while Finn is an exceptional player and can do things with the ball nobody else can. He’s relatively easily quietened by the better defences in rugby. Where as no matter who Johnny is in there against you can always guarantee he will do his thing. Would’ve given an honourable mention to van der flier, jalibert and tadhg beirne also

Hard to judge on the Russell/Sexton thing at the highest level, Sexton is usually behind a better forwards pack giving him better ball. Its going to be unconscious bias that Finn Russell is quieter against more intense defences because he is up against that far more often due to the pack up front not giving him a platform.

Mate one of them plays for a much better team. The top four sides in the world are well clear of the rest. If you switch Russell and Sexton then imo Scotland become worse. Sextons game is well suited to playing behind a dominant pack. Russell’s isn’t as he can just conjure up something out of nothing even if the forwards are going backwards.

There was alot of Christmas table discussion in Ireland, if we continue with same team bar a Sexton replacement, or do you cut guys around 30, 31 years old and above who are unlikely to play in the next WC and start getting international experience into the promising youngsters.

74% for the 2024 season. 92 defenders beaten, 24 clean breaks, 8 tries and 2 try assists. Damian Penaud 73%, 50 defenders beaten, 30 clean breaks, 18 tries, and 8 try assists. On balance their pretty close and Damian Penaud was absolutely deadly this year. For Scotland Kyle Steyn has 82% with less than half the minutes played, and D'Arcy Graham has also has 81% with near half the minutes played. DVDM played 1103 D'Arcy Graham with 609, and Kyle Steyn with 457 minutes. Penaud played 968. The two wingers in this team are two absolute machines!

A bit off-topic, and our Saffa friends will protest, but RWC 2023 to me was one of the worst tournaments Rugby has seen: a lopsided draw, terrible conditions which seriously affected the quality of the early rounds, filthy discipline, all the best tugby played in the quarters, and a final decided by TMO intervention and poor goalkicking. The surprise showing by Fiji, a maiden win for Portugal and pool stage exit by Australia provided a little drama, but Georgia were a disappointing no-show, England were seemingly determined to demonstrate as close to zero attacking ambition as humanly possible, Argentina were a mess and the vaunted French defence (which had helped carry them to the top of the world rankings) was found to be desperately porous when it mattered most. Many games were characterized by low-scoring, conservative defense-first strategies, resulting in endless set-piece resets and games that exceeded the 100min mark. All that together with some atrociously partisan refereeing (as seen in the Fiji-Wales game in round 1), the increasingly byzantine rule structure that continues to baffle fans, pundits and players alike, and the endless stoppage that results from it all added up to a conpetition that was, quite frankly, often a chore to sit though. Far from being an advertisement for the game, much of this past RWC has provided more examples of what's wrong with the modern game than what it offers at its best.

As I recall furlong locked the bok scrum as did bealham when furlong got too tired. You can keep them every Sunday because I go Baille and Furlong. 365 and even the extra day on leap year.

I don't think it's right to include England players citing their stats at the world cup. You have to take into account the teams they are playing. And they did have a very easy run

I understand what you are saying but you can’t use some stats on some players and not on others . Firstly , at what number do you think in a opposition countries ranking against your own ranking do you start discounting stats when they play ? Secondly a teams stats are irrelevant when considering a players performance. Yes you can factor for a weak opposition it do you then must you not do the same against a stronger team ?
@bluestuable

@@patrickchilds2987 when it comes to international team rankings there is sometimes a substantial handicap if playing a lesser team, so individual players stats should also be handicapped when playing lesser team. The number a team should discounted is any team below you in the rankings the further down the more the handicap for the stats ratio. This also answers what you think is irrelevant with regards to individual players. I.e a player who has a great metres made stat against a team 10 places or more below them in world rankings should absolutely not count as impressively as metres made against a team above you. And England didn't play a lot of teams above them during the world cup. Do you see my point?

Your spelling of Tadhg and Beirne, respectively, and trying to put VDF at blindside flanker shows you have no idea what you’re talking about 😂 Doris is a starter in every team in the world, there is an argument he might play 6 for the AB’s because of how good Savea is at 8, but he is a unit and a half. But yes, Beirne over Itoje everyday of the week
