And if you look at Dublin and southeast Ireland, I think you'll find your claim is not only outdated but risible. As for a Protestant state - the retreating British of the time drew lines on maps across their shrinking empire (not to protect people as they never ever cared about people) to save face. And they left the inevitable problems of segregation for future generations: see, e.g., India/Pakistan; Israel/Palestine; Ireland/Northern Ireland, etc ... history is replete with evidence that imperialists care noting about you or your 'union'. This is the first time in my life I have heard a balanced NI political viewpoints. All the more impressive is how erudite it was given how complex the history and society consideration are. Nesbitt is right that NI has been cast out somewhat by a resurgent English nationalism and Brexit. By the same token, it is not a given either that the people of the Irish Republic want an United ireland at any cost. There are big challenges to consider. It needs to work on all levels and that will take time for collective belief systems to shift to a normality that bases the future more than the past.

Home rule for all UK nations under a federal Government , based in Manchester ? We'd all be a lot poorer and even weaker dealing global tech giants in a fragmented Britain. We certainly don't want a border at Berwick , just look at the current behaviour of UK Border officials against innocent EU visitors. The Republic has moved a long way , and in my view reunited Ireland is inevitable with Health provision and other issues remaining to be fixed . The North is now more backward , with a creationist DUP , on sexuality and a woman's rights over her own body , with little appeal to an educated youth . A cuddle with Salmond , more like a bear squeeze

I dislike the effect of Scottish nationalism on working class 'British' people (i.e. in this context those living in Britain as currently constituted), especially the splitting of the progressive vote between Labour and SNP. However, I can't help but enjoy Alex Salmond's gentle, thoughtful and measured approach to interviewing. As someone who likes the union, but who also believes in more socially liberal politics and modern democratic socialist economics, I can't help but be persuaded by the (albeit slightly noncommittal) arguments of the first lad. Re-partition seems like the most simple option, but that would be short-termist... eventually that province would need further partition to the point that we would end up with an island of unionism in East Belfast. So that's probably not an option. Some sort of further consession / cross-national power sharing seems the best option to me, but as he said it should be the decision of the people of NI (but... a compromise, not a 'who has the most people' poll). P.S. the DUP are awful. For everyone.

Watching from Ireland I never heard a unionist speak so much common sence...Mike Nesbitt is not an angry man like Paisley.atleast he is a Christian a branch of the Christian family. I think too that western society has being cencored by political correctness to say it but we have way more in common than not and wesee the threath of Islam witch we do not want. very interesting conversation..

Yep Nesbitt is a realist and a pragmatist which is needed but we had a chance to vote for UUP when he was leader but he was resoundly rejected...unfortunately..i fear that a lack of creative thinking and some fore thought by unionism will doom us all of this persuaion in NI.

Sinn Fein has called for the debate & to sit dosnt & talk about what a United Ireland would look like the DUP is the ones stopping it. Fenna Foyle & Fenna Geal where lucky to hold the Dauil causeSinn Fein had under estimated the Irish people voting for them & the stubbornness of other parties not wanting to talk to Shenfield is why Fenna Foyle & Fenna Geal won control of the dauil. Fact 53% said no to Brexit & yes to remain in the EU so a boarder poll is fair & right for people to have their say.

Great interview I largely agree with, except the comment that English nationalism is the biggest threat, showing footage of a party that hasn't had any parliamentary presence, apart from 2 seats in 2009. They were soon got rid of. The BNP runs across the UK. Have a look at the % of the votes by population in each UK country...they are more popular in some Welsh and Scottish constituencies than votes gleaned in the majority of English constituencies. Totally wrong to suggest that the BNP is an English nationalist party. I recommend anyone to go and have a look at the votes they get in any UK parliament, the EU, or even local elections. It's on Wikipedia. They disgust the majority of Brits, and they have only had 2 seats for one term since they started in 1983. The BNP is not an English nationalist party, it is a British party running in some constituencies across the UK...and hardly anyone votes for them. I'm upset anyone ever votes for them, but this footage was somewhat misleading and suggests two things that are not right 1) that the BNP is exclusively English about English Nationalism 2) that there is support of any significance...there isnt. If anything they stopped fielding candidates because they have no support.

the far right and the far left never get much traction in England, some would say thats a benefit of first past the post
