This is a Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) in a field near the A970 highway in Central Dunrossness, Shetland Islands, UK on 5/15/23. The lapwing name is given a number of different ground nesting birds like plovers and dotterels. In Europe, the name lapwing refers specifically to the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), the only member of the group to occur in most of Europe and the first bird to go by the English name of lapwing. It was estimated that about 2600 breeding pairs of this bird were to be found in the Shetland Islands as of 1993 and I couldn't find any more specific information about the current Shetland population.
This bird was observed, as indicated near the A970 highway in Dunrossness on 5/15/23. Dunrossness is the most southern parish on the main Shetland Island, Shetland Main, and occupies the most southerly portion of the island. I filmed it during a stop in the return phase of our Viking Cruises "Ancient Civilizations of Shetland" excursion during a Viking British Isles Explorer Cruise. We were returning to Lerwick from the southern tip of the island, Sumburgh.
