I'm in the Pride of New Mexico Marching Band at NMSU and we sing this, then play it at the end of every performance to say "Thank You" to all of our supporters and fans. I will always love this piece.

The jax state marching southerners from jacksonville Alabama play this as a warm up and you it takes your breath away - dr david Walters ,band director for many years arranged it for the marching southerners ,usally 450 strong with about 25 20- j lower brass , just has been a blessing to me my whole life. Was so glad to find this beautiful choral rendition.

There are some great choirs, orchestras, etc. doing this on You Tube. Unfortunately the Recordings ruin many. Congratulate the technicians on this recording for doing the best recording I have heard so far of this beautiful music.

I love this song quite a lot. My high school A Capella sings this song (it is our "signature piece) and it made me tear up singing it. This really brought back memories, especially seeing it done so well :')

Just right all the way around. Member of the fine Plymouth Congregational choir of Lansing, Mi from 48 boy choir to the chancel Choir 60 voices directed by the late Dr. Richard E Klausli, organist and choirmaster from 48-79.He taught Music History and Michigan State and a number of voices from the school sang in the choir off and on. We did this number and Nunc Dimittus a number of times , mostly Anglican stuff. Looking forward to singing these and several others in a reunion choir on the 23rd of November as part of the church's 150 yr celebration.

The dynamics were awesome and the choir is wonderful. I too feel it could've been a bit faster and I also agree that the "blissful" and solemn state I found myself in was interrupted by the applause. There are some pieces that move you to tears and silence and some to gleeful applause, this was one for the former! Still it is one of my very favorites; sung by my church choir!

The sad part is, Tchesnokoff never got to hear this wonderful piece performed. I've sung and conducted this many times. He wrote it in 1912 and it was published a year later, but when the Bolsheviks took over in Russia a few years later, he was told he was not allowed to write any more sacred music. It wasn't until after his death in 1944 that his children got to hear it. It is the Communion Hymn for Christmas. One of my very favorite pieces of choral music---along with Rachmaninoff's works.

A wonderful performance! Great power, vocal beauty and discipline. I prefer it in Church Slavonic and the high A would be easier for the sopranos to take on the word Alliluia, but the English makes the utterly magnificent text so dramatic and accessible to English speaking audiences. Stunning! Bravo!

I disagree that the tempo is "too fast"; in fact in could be a tad faster; any slower and the music could "plod" along. I sang this anthem under the great Dr. Charles R. Davis with the Emory & Henry College Concert Choir, where I was Tenor 1 Section Head, and it continues to be one of my favorite pieces along with David Stanley York's "Once To Ev'ry Man And Nation", and the Schubert "Omnipotence".

Brilliant performance. I would like for this ensemble to explore pianissimo, really get in touch with singing very quietly. Doing so would expand their arsenal tremendously. They have great tone, excellent intonation, but I never heard less than a mezzo-forte. Maybe it was mic'd too closely, I don't know. Singing quietly is one of the most difficult tasks, but the reward is un-measurable.

Agreed. Overall, the *recording* diminished the entire performance, which is a shame. I thought the one at kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqO2eHSkf56Ud9U was superb, both in performance and in the recording.

This is composed for the Orthodox Christian Service on Holy and Great Friday! Referring to Christ's descent to Hades ("the midst of the earth") to rescue Adam and Eve and the other OT saints, leading them into Paradise now opened to all of us who love Christ Jesus! The Psalmist has prophesied this in his psalm 74:12! Glory to God Who has destroyed Death by His Death and raises us with Him in and by His Resurrection!

Eva Tempenis; This is more of an exciting Choral Anthem {for Choir} than found in a Church Hymnal, per se. That Said, Yes the text reflects one of Myriad themes in Orthodox Christianity, that of Salvation being created of Almighty God, Creator; given to us freely by His Eternal Grace & favor; Salvation, by Christ's Atonement, is NOT earned, it is NOT given in return for any labor or services. It is NOT the result of making a "Decision" for Jesus; or given in return for walking a church aisle during an Altar Call....

Good tempo, interesting dynamics, intonation--can't understand the text (which is done in English), so...why not just go ahead and do as written? The Russian is *not* that hard & plus you only have one word for the second half! :)
