Back in the 1960's I was stationed in Britain. Off base there was one girl that spoke a different way from the other local girls. Somehow we got together and one week she invited me to go up to her parents with her. That weekend she took me to a northern soul venue. The music blew me away. I told her "I loved this British music". What she replied dumbfounded me! "This is your music. American black music". She bought me 5 records and when I got back to base everybody wanted to hear them, but nobody had ever heard them before. Well we got married and came back to live in America. But she's never forgot northern soul. Whenever we have barbeques she plays and dances to the music. Our neighbours all join in and dance as well. Our children have grown up knowing northern soul and now our grandchildren are learning about part of American history that is sadly forgot too. Its still a joy to watch (and join in with) my wife when she dances (a little slower now) to northern soul, but the smile on her face when certain records are played is wonderful to see. She's back in her 20's.

There were some romantic films about the Northern Soul movement, about 12 years ago. I wish I could remember their names. Anyway- she might like them. Also check out an artist called Duffy. She did a modern version of Northern Soul. Great dancers on that youtube video.

OH MY GOD.. I remember my nights dancing at Wigan Casino..they were EPIC.. my oxford bags trousers and plaid cheese cloth tie top.. Fantastic music..a fantastic era..I'm 61 with severe osteoarthritis..can just about walk now but by god I have fantastic memories and in my mind I could still do it..maybe not walk for a week afterwards but I'd enjoy it.. I'm so glad that Kelvin Fletcher danced northern soul to this very song on strictly and showed a lot of people who didn't have a clue what it was..my mom wouldn't let me go..so i used to stay at a friends and she never knew we used to go to the casino..happy days..young and with my future ahead of me..a fantastic era..

@Kinmarie Van-Ever hey there!! I'm sorry about your situation, though man, if you can sway, snap your fingers, use any part of your body because yes I hear in your heart, moving enough to refresh your mind body and soul that you will move as best as you can, you not one to sit on the sidelines. I've been in a funk over oh a year maybe, I have this rare disorder that effects my muscles, "Stiff Person Syndrome"m, it's low level and have it for 30yrs and yeah I can walk with a rollator(walker with wheels) so I can get out and yet I was down - saw my doc and he was all, "wow, look at you your moving good" and I was, for me, just standing up from the chair etc. All, I know I love this Northern Soul, I'm 73 years old, was a singer in groups, (my voice, ugh, lol though I've been singing into my phone and posting on Facebook) I don't care that it's not in the shape it used to be and I am going to work on that, like you with your dancing..and boy, this is where we are, on youtube listening to great music. Your story of your younger daring dancing days brought a smile, thank you. Whatever we can move, let's move.See ya on the dance floor ~ 👍🏾💖☮

@@marysalvi242 Hi Mary..thank you for your lovely reply..you too undeterred having the music and memories inside without being able to actually do it anymore.. but hey wasn't it good when we could.. i love music. All music..pop..r&b..Motown..Philly.. classic..jazz..ska..but to dance to you can't beat Northern Soul. . Loved skimming across the floor.. yes i know it's a good day when i can stand up without my knees clicking and giving way..I too suffer from depression..not because of my illness but just various life experiences..but my family keep me going.. I'm unable to work now so my time is used for knitting and crocheting for neo natal hats and blankets and for a yearly shoebox appeal which sends very under privileged children little games or the hats and scarves which i knit..i also foster and rehabilitate abused and neglected cats and get them to trust us again so they can get their furever home. . So I keep busy my own way..i find that keeping my hands and mind busy helps my mood. Look after yourself..Kim 🇬🇧💞✝️🙏👍🐾🐾🐈

@@mybestoldmusicvideo Yes, petrol was 25p a gallon, family loaf of bread was 30p, the skirt I'm wearing cost me £3 to make; no shops sold "northern soul" clothes, they were made to order. No alcohol was sold, no food, just soft drinks and dancing - alot of legal drugs of course used illegally, usually script stuff: 10 blueys for £1. You can see why Wigan was shut down, no commercial entities made any money from it

As a London lad, I was introduced to Northern Soul from blokes I met when I joined the Army. The clothing we wore was more or less the same - I had a CRACKING pair of grey two tone flares with a FIVE button waistband and THREE BELTS, spade toed shoes etc.. When I first saw Northern soul dancing done by some blokes at a ‘disco’ in Andover Hampshire, I was totally blown away. The lads who did it told me I should go up north with them on leave and see whole dance halls doing it. I did and I was hooked. I spent almost all of my money on records and clobber when I was on leave. Wish I could still do it all now (65 and not as nimble!) The excitement of going out was just incredible, and if

My wonderful Mom died June 2019 aged 93. Every month at our church youth club in the West Midlands she would help at the door ushering the teenagers into the Church Hall. The DJ would play all Northern Soul Music and my Mom would get on that dance floor. She just loved this genre of music and i remember when she came home she always had a smile on her face telling me and my dad what a good time she would have.

Funny, how you can dance like this, and get far more out of it than alcohol or drugs. It energises you, lifts you up, and you get a great workout at the same time! Because dancing, another form of physical exercise, gets the chemicals called endorphins in the body, going, which makes you feel so good. Better than any drug - and free! 💖💖

They used to have live artist on also. We saw Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, The Elgins The Fantasics to name just a few. Great times no drugs very few drunks no knives very little swearing. 70s era and music brilliant, some of the rock was pretty good.

I'm from the un-united states and grew up in 50's, my cousin and I fell in love with the Beatles...omg, being black the Beatles just didn'[t take where we lived, say, like the Righteous Brothers, so we met two girls in H.S. who were white and I laugh because they were "weird" ?? ::sigh:: human beings, we're a strange species hey. Well, we got into music, one gal fell in love and went down that path, and now my cousin has passed away, so it's my spirit "sisters" and myself, still here, 73 yrs old loving our grandkids and music!! Been missing going to a fave place because of covid and it was a historic dive - someone bought the place, so we'll see, if live music Monday - Sunday will still be happening. Hope so, meanwhile, I'm here and dancing around..Johanna, I told some one else, "see ya around the dance floor" : ) ☮💃🏾

I can't believe it's back again 😂 but I never knew this dance had a name. I guess it's called "northern soul"? From Britain. Hell, I've been dancing like that since 1970. ❤️

Northern Soul was a natural, spontaneous happening between a culture with a folk dance culture and reacting to music from somewhere else. I reacted similarly in DC area US, 1964, 12 years old. 1973 in Torquay I met "scottish" carpenters, just northern, Newcastle, close. My ancestors are from Glencairn and Dumfries. Keeping time with feet is in common with Scota. Now, NS in common with shuffle, trance, moonwalk et al. After dance parties age 13-14, exploring this, I was ridiculed for this style in high school, and later, age 15+. Now I can learn northern soul footwork from youtube at age 69.

@@lydiawilson3789 I danced lot in my late teens and twenties, since then I've pretty much continuously done either dance, Tai Chi, Yoga or Pilates classes. (I had to really, as a way to manage chronic asthma.) I'm 61 now and I feel almost as agile as in my twenties. If Bob continued with some sort of stomatic practises then I see no reason why he shouldn't dance in his 60s.

This kind of thing get talked about as if it disappeared and left us standing, but really I think it is 'we' that moved on and away, as is the norm; the music still exists.

We wore all those fashions in Coventry in the 70's and I don't think a single one of us had the faintest idea what Northern Soul was . We got badly made Oxford Bags , Spoon shoes and jumpers with three stars on them from the first Sunday Markets . I was more interested in Mike Oldfield than Soul music .
