Not trying to be snobbish but also the average tourist visiting the North is very different from the typical tourist who comes to Spain looking for sun and party. As an art student, this is probably one of the countries with the most unique varieties of architecture. Great and unique painters and an extremely good catalogue of literary masterpieces. Along with museums and even contemporary artist of today that are in the top of their fields (some of which sadly had to leave, Spain is sadly not filling the needs of scientists, artists and other intellectuals at this moment in time). Not to start talking about the beautiful landscapes, our painted like skies and our biodiversity along with rich history.

very well put together video, guys. Asturias is, in my opinion, the most beautiful region in spain. It is also one of the most importatn history wise since the begining of what you could call the "spain's legend" starts here. there's a shrine, hiden in the moutains, called covadonga in honor of the first "hero" of spain. In the year 711 the moors had conquered almost all the iberian peninsula but the northern regions, protected by the mountains. Don Pelayo, defeated the morish troops, begining a 700 year period of wars called the reconquista. at the end of which in 1492 the country of spain was born under the spanish monarchy of the Catholic kings Isabella and Ferdinand and america was found by Cristopher Columbus. The principality of Asturias is full of history and beautiful places

The food, the people, the history, the sites, second to none. We have been to 6 countries in Europe, but Espana, la mejor! Austria, Czech Republic, close seconds, France is close, but Paris really sucked... Now, is funny to me how our food, culture and words are attached to old Spain without our unconsious knowledge. In Asturias there's a unique architecture called Asturian Pre-Romanesque . Most of the buildings are in Oviedo, you Saw one in this video... They belong to a period in which the only Christian kingdom in Spain was Asturias, the rest of the country was Muslim. It was a long time ago, in the VlII and IX centuries, during Charlemagne Empire. It was the first kingdom which defeated the Muslims in the Middle Ages. Dont forget the crosses in the cathedral, they are amazing and similar to Carolingian gold objects. You'll be welcomed... Its culture and folklore. Its mountains and beaches. Its proper snow season and all... Perhaps the North remains undiscovered because that's what the average tourist wants. Cheap beer. Cheap food. Sun sun sun and be surrounded by fellow english speakers and is too lazy to go on its own? Glad You enjoyed your visit and thanks for sharing your experience. You still need to go to Galicia and specialy the Basque Country. :)

Can pretty much agree with what you've said. The reality is, even the Spanish tourism board understands that the North is less visited, or considered, for tourists so want people to be more aware of the options Spain has to offer. There's got to be a tonne of people visiting the same spots that arent just after cheap beer, cheap food and sun and would be stoked to know there are amazing options up North.

Spain has snow-capped mountains, lush forests, great steppe plains, rivers, lakes, beaches, deserts, and several different climates, Mediterranean, Atlantic, subtropical, high mountains ... it has such an extensive history that they have passed through it and left their monuments the first Neolithic settlers of Europe, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Visigoths, the Arabs ... it has Palaeolithic constructions, Roman, Arab, Gothic, medieval, Renaissance monuments and of the industrialization of the XIX century. ,her variety climatic and historical is impressive.

The north is amazing. I love how matural it is. The shoreline is all cliffs and beaches. Really pretty. Make sure you carry cash. Some of the places are so remote you cant use credit cards.

Oviedo appears in Woody Allen's film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (not his best film, Im afraid) after he was awarded with the "Príncipe de Asturias". He thanked the town by filming parts of Asturias in this movie. He added several parts of Avilés as well (he loves lighthouses, dont know why). It was a way of thanking the warm welcome he received there, people in Spain like his movies more than in the USA and the reason you can find his portrait in Oviedo, if anyone wonders why, and its shown in one of these videos...

Asturias is where all my family are from, specifically Llanes! the only other part of spain I have visited is Barcelona. I love north Spain, we drive from England so we've explored the west of the Basque country on our way. Santander is my favourite city in the area. Bulnes is an amazing place to visit! Sotres is somewhere I always love going to, the drive up isn't fun with really steep hairpin bend and drive ways that you can't even understand how the get the cars up, but has the most beautiful scenery especially on the walk to the shepherds hut. Poo is such an amazing little village outside Llanes with a huge lagoon like beach or San Martin which is a bit of a walk but it gorgeous little cove like beach. Glad you enjoyed it!

If you enjoyed the West-northen Spain you would also love the Eastern-nord: The pyrenees have so much to offer: old romanic buildings scattered along the forests, huge lakes. There's even a town made of only stone which is next to a artificial lake made where there used to be a village, and you can see the tip of the church tower peaking of the lake (This place called "Tavertet").

Amazing opportunity to see this beautiful part of Spain guys! Another great episode too. While you're up in that region I seriously suggest you visit amazingly beautiful Andorra, a micro nation I visited for a work project that's between France and Spain way up in the Pyrenees mountains. I've never seen a KZbin blogger do one there yet ;) Safe travels, James and Kim

Sounds amazing, a few people mentioning the Pyrenees actually - this was just a fleeting 48 hour taster trip. Will definitely make the effort to come back that way again though!
