Northern Tongariro Circuit - The Adventurous Way

We were off to spend three nights on the mountain and camped one of them inside a volcano. High winds wreaked havoc on our tents and we head home early, but see some never before landscapes as we hike largely off-track to avoid the hoards of Tongariro crossing tourists, please like and comment.

Did you actually survive to make a Part 2??? I did the circuit in the opposite direction in February and in glorious weather. Enjoyed swimming in the stream on top of the waterfall at Otorere hut and in the beautiful clear waters near Waihohonui hut. I note that you didn't! I was horrified when we caught up to the masses doing the Tongariro Crossing. Everything I dislike in a tramp! I had expected a lot of people at such a popular time of the year and in ideal weather conditions but even so the sheer number came as a real shock . Certainly it's an interesting circuit but personally I'd go for bush and greenery any day rather than this largely barren desert landscape. Still, it's a unique environment and so different to other parts of NZ.

Yes survived, that’s all part of the benefits of my followers watching and learning from the decision-making I do regarding difficult situations. sadly this post was removed from one of the big Facebook groups because they don’t want new Trampers to be encouraged to think that it’s okay to try these as well 😢 you will see we went to great effort to avoid the crowds, I am so over the crowds on great walks hence I do backcountry

cool mission, the springs themselves are up at the end of an lava flow further up the valley, a great place to visit, can continue up the lava flow to upper tama also.

@@Rawrnz yes it sure was, be sure to see [Ep.2] Graham & I have been to the start of the river when we camped at the back of upper Tama five years ago but on the topo map where I was in the video was right on the X and it does make sense because it means deep water which it was. Interesting 🤔

@@OutdoorsmanDave interesting that topo map puts it so far down, the online one i use has it further up. Re EP2, went up north crater 2 weeks ago, got my bum handed to me also.. that southerly rockets over the flat up there. Anyways keep it up, love the kaimai stuffs too.
