American-born speaker here. My parents are from different regions and I was raised with both dialects. My natural speech is a weird combination of both Northern and Central. I can only imagine it sounds weird as hell to a native speaker. Kind of like if someone in America came across someone switching in and out of a Boston accent and deep Southern country accent.

My partners family is Central speaking but the only teachers I’ve had are Northern speakers so it’s wild to hear which central things I’ve picked up and makes sense why my teacher kept making me practice certain things more… 🤯🤯🤯

oh my god that "T" sound that you make as the central accent is SO interesting and amazing!!!!! I had to hear it about 20 times to be able to say it very cool!!!!!

Currently living in Danang learning Vietnamese here. Before moving to Vietnam, I was learning the northern accent, thinking that people in Danang could understand me. Boy, was I wrong! When I was trying to order coconut coffee (cà phê dừa), baristas often mistook what I said as milk coffee (cà phê sữa). Thankfully, my tutor's from Quang Nam province, so I'm getting exposure to the Central accent now.

Central accent is hard to learn outside of vietnam. There are not many written resources or online resources outside of a few youtube videos. All the language learning apps speak southern or northern accent sadly.

It ain't the central vietnamese accent. I actually expected the huê dialect!

gi, North in English sounds like: Zi, Central/South like Yi

Never knew the Central accent sounds that much different from Northern. I thought it was gibberish Vietnamese at the first place
@go_vietnamese4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. They are so different that you might recognize them very early in a conversation, especially those sounds mentioned. :)

@Go Vietnamese - Language Lessons I can’t believe I’ve been to the central for quite some time and yet, the difference was unrecognizable before

Cảm ơn các cháu/con. The Central is a like the South with Đúng sounding like Yung in English, while the Northern is like Z in English. Zum. Also, thích is quite different.
@go_vietnamese3 жыл бұрын
Actually, "đúng" starts with "đ" which is the same in north, south and central :). But I guess you're talking about 'd' right? :)

@@go_vietnamese Yes. That’s what I meant

@@MiltonJava So 'đ': same in north, south and central while 'd' is pronounced like /z/ in the north, and /y/ in central and the south. '-ich' is also quite different too. I think we meant the same thing :)
@MiltonJava3 жыл бұрын
@@go_vietnamese I didn’t mean đ. I meant d. Sounds like z to this English speaker in the North and like Yi in the South.

Quite interesting to watch clip. It is kind of similar of that American and British English. The north's sound probably better over all; however, in terms of correctness the central is better, i.e., the 'r', 'tr' sounds, the north pronounce incorrectly.
@go_vietnamese4 жыл бұрын
As nothern or southern or central are accents, we can just choose one accent which is the easiest for us to learn. Usually we don't talk about an accent is correct or incorrect. So you probably find central accent easier than the others to absorb :)
@chrisvo2032 жыл бұрын
strangely enough i agree with both here. if you consider how much vietnamese is derived from chinese, especially cantonese, and use that as the "correct" model, the northern accent is more correct. but at the end of the day, they're all accents now and there really is no such thing as a right and wrong accent, nor right and wrong pronunciation. it's all relative!

I’m a beginner in learning Vietnamese language. Is it correct to perceive the Central accent is closer to the Southern accent than the Northern?
@ferivertid Жыл бұрын
this is wrong as even in the central region, there exist differences too. people from regions above the hai van pass would sound drastically different than the people below. take for instance the thanh hoa accent and the quang nam accent. both can be categorized as central vietnamese though if you watch videos of both accent, they're nothing like each other
@PepperWilliams_songcovers3 жыл бұрын
Very very very beginner!!! I'm just starting to learn this language (December 15, 2020 - My birthday present to me :). The northern way might be better for me to learn, because the words in #2 would be impossible for me to pronounce. Or, how about if I mix both of them hahahaha? No seriously, how do I choose?
@go_vietnamese3 жыл бұрын
You can learn the accent that you feel easier, or if you plan to move to Vietnam, you can learn the accent of that area, in my opinion :)

Why not just do north central and south all together?

Thuy: are you using the Southern dialect? I appreciate the "r" in your dialect.
@govietnamese97562 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, Thuy is using the Da Nang dialect which is similar to Southern one. So you can hear the /r/ sound :)
@larrylenard42842 жыл бұрын
@@govietnamese9756 I really appreciate that. I'm trying to learn Vietnamese and I'm frustrated with the elimination of the "tr" and "r" sounds and the "h" becoming a "g" in the Ha Noi dialect, but equally frustrated with the Sai Gon dialect adding the "g" to words that end with "n" like Tran.

Depends on the accent that you’re listening. In this video, it is Da Nang accent. If you listen to Hue or Quang Nam or Quang Ngai accent, it will be very different :)
