I’m Canadian Vietnamese. My parents are from the South and I slip some northern dialect sometimes. However, the Hue one is so alien to me 😂

Việt Nam phải có tới 4 hoặc 5 phương ngữ mới chính xác. Miền Nam 1 phương ngữ, miền Bắc 1 phương ngữ, miền Trung thì có ít nhất 2 phương ngữ: điển hình giọng Quảng (Quảng Ngải, Quảng Nam, Đà Nẵng) và giọng Huế.

As a Vietnamese American who learned his Vietnamese from his parents... I'm a mix of Central and Southern which gets really confusing sometimes

I'm born from the south and my parents grew up from the south. But my grandparents are from the north and central. When my parents and I talk with each other, our accent is more like the south side. My mom can understand all three accents (north, south, central), but my dad can only understand the north and south due to the influence of their parents. The north and south accents are a bit similar to each other. I can understand the north and south accents but not much of the central. The only way that I can understand the central accent is to know the context of the conversation, even though I don't understand some of the words in the sentence. To me, the north accent = the British accent, the south accent = American accent, and the central accent = the native or kinda like an ancient way of speaking Vietnamese. 😂

My grandparents are from the north but migrated south after 1954 to escape the communists. An accent shift took place since, and the classic northern accent is only preserved by the diaspora, or anti-communist northern migrants and their descendants in the south and especially abroad (think Nguyen Ngoc Ngan, Khanh Ly, Ky Duyen). It’s very distinct from the modern northern accent. I think it’s super cool how we have a whole community of Bắc kỳ 54 (or 54 northerners) who consist of anti-communist northern migrants to the south and now abroad and their descendants who are still able to preserve their accent to this day.

All I can say regarding the extremities of Vietnamese dialect differences, and the potential to learn one and then not be able to communicate in another part of the country, is that the alphabet of Vietnam is at least readable for those used to English script---. I mean, I am in Thailand and there are dialect differences but the alphabet is ALSO a scribbly, beautiful artwork which is unreadable unless you truly study for a few YEARS to get it. With Vietnamese, you have to learn the accent marks but you can at least READ what you can't understand or pronounce!
