My grandparents are from the north but migrated south after 1954 to escape the communists. An accent shift took place since, and the classic northern accent is only preserved by the diaspora, or anti-communist northern migrants and their descendants in the south and especially abroad (think Nguyen Ngoc Ngan, Khanh Ly, Ky Duyen). It’s very distinct from the modern northern accent. I think it’s super cool how we have a whole community of Bắc kỳ 54 (or 54 northerners) who consist of anti-communist northern migrants to the south and now abroad and their descendants who are still able to preserve their accent to this day.

@@peterlee6391 This is Thuy Nga, a very beloved famous show based in the US that is watched all over the Vietnamese diaspora. The two MCs (Nguyen Ngoc Ngan and Ky Duyen) both speak this accent so you’ll hear it in every episode! If you want unlimited resources for this accent just watch this show! This episode was only from a few months ago showing how the accent survives to this day, even after 1954! kzbin.info/www/bejne/noeTgXemjM12ipYsi=GObbh5XJsdV831Wa This is a very famous singer, Khanh Ly, speaking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i560c6yXe5uBr8ksi=PBBjpTHtAMYIZg0w Interview of another famous singer, Thanh Lan, both the interviewer and interviewee speak with this accent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKnNeIN5ptiGqKcsi=ưKYEp4RgGVAv4AM1 Interview with a famous composer, Pham Duy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6nagpSIfbKMqZYsi=MSh4QiDtfzFFPnCe Interview specifically about the accent, the interviewer speaks in a modern “communist” post-1954 northern accent, but the interviewee speaks in the vintage “anti-communist diaspora” pre-1954 accent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZTKkGWwmZd3htUsi=vJBZ1WƯp8EqTmh2Ư The interviewee is the famous singer Y Lan, Pham Duy’s niece, and she also speaks in this accent but the interviewer is speaking in southern. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH3UYZh9bNdngK8si=oj9MUOPcDxJDPGak

Việt Nam phải có tới 4 hoặc 5 phương ngữ mới chính xác. Miền Nam 1 phương ngữ, miền Bắc 1 phương ngữ, miền Trung thì có ít nhất 2 phương ngữ: điển hình giọng Quảng (Quảng Ngải, Quảng Nam, Đà Nẵng) và giọng Huế.

I’m a beginner in learning Vietnamese language. Is it correct to perceive the Central accent is closer to the Southern accent than the Northern?
@ferivertid
@ferivertid Жыл бұрын
this is wrong as even in the central region, there exist differences too. people from regions above the hai van pass would sound drastically different than the people below. take for instance the thanh hoa accent and the quang nam accent. both can be categorized as central vietnamese though if you watch videos of both accent, they're nothing like each other

Xin chào Thuy When I listen to the words I hear a change in the ending consonant. When you say cơn I hear the "n" clearly, but when you say "cân" I hear an "n" followed by a "g". Is that a southern pronunciation? Cảm ơn
