+2 for the wrong reasons. Honestly, I find SV TOO anxiety-inducing at times for it to have a meditative effect. I love the visuals and everything but the fact that the clock ticks down even when you’ve just standing still subtly coerces me to be constantly productive in the game. I would often find myself frantically scurrying back to my house at midnight since I min-maxed too hard in the mines or the fishing areas. Also, the vast amount of events/seeds/other objectives in the game is frequently making me paying visits to the wiki or other KZbin videos in order to optimise the approach for this random seasonal event or that relationship with a town member, which kind of sucks the fun out of the game. (I get that these are more of a me problem but yeah) I bought SV thinking it’d be a chill game to play when I want to release stress, but it’s just collecting dust on my steam library since it’s too tiring to play when I want to destress but too uneventful when I have spare time to play something more exciting.

@Ryyouu Жыл бұрын
@Coterminous Yeah a lot of it is simple farming, but it's farming with a purpose for quests, gifts, progression etc. For me it doesn't feel like "farming for the sake of farming" until I get super late game in a playthrough. And there's decorating your farm, optimizing/min-maxing it, mining, exploration, and overall working towards things like the community center. there really is a lot in the game The NPCS actually do have some pretty interesting stories. there's things to uncover like affairs, resentment between spouses for lost youth, alcoholism, and other such storylines. There are so many goals in the game, and the length of the days (for me) makes it so I don't get burnt out doing the same thing because the days make things very compartmentalized. I can go mining for a whole day, and then it's time for bed right before I get exhausted of it, and it makes it feel like a good time to do something else the next day. Basically the time system in the game is great for reducing burnout imo. However I do LOATHE spring of the first year because I've played it so many times. I understand how it can feel like a chore-simulator for some people, but there really is a lot to discover, hella quests, and just a lot to do
@DrZaius3141 Жыл бұрын
@@pennyisdreadful You could apply that same logic to virtually any game. Similar games would be the aformentioned Big Ambitions, but factory builders like Factorio, Satisfactory, Dyson Sphere Program, etc also have an approach like that. You work, improve, unlock, build up, automate. In terms of NPCs, there are "role-playing" games out there that have more shallow characters (Skyrim springs to mind) and less change within them over the course of a playthrough. Ultimately, games are wildly different, so your argument is just pure bad faith, because you attack by abstraction without allowing any sort of connection to what you think is a valid games. Would you also decry Minecraft as "doing boring chores simulator"? Because you chop wood, mine ores, smelt and repeat all for what? To make villagers happy? Is Valheim the same? Get ressources, grind some more until you have everything. Or perhaps you're one of those "souls-like" wankers. There you learn how to beat a boss by pure muscle memory and repetition. For what? To learn even more for a harder boss. And once you're done, all the muscle memory is lost again and you have gained nothing. Meanwhile SDV also challenges your ability to problem solve (again, if we're talking about a speedy approach) with the big difference being that in SDV you have to get creative to problem solve - figure out a plan for when to do what and work around unforseen circumstances and inevitable mistakes. Achieving 100% in SDV has a 24h speed run world record, it's a ton of knowledge that needs to be applied and all that in a more general sense than moving from one part of a sequence of challenges to the next. Bottom line: Nothing matters in video games if you want to be cynical. But I'd rather play one where my creativity and knowledge can be challenged than to do something that is purely about clicking fast and precise.

I have easily over 500 hrs in Stardew, and probably +10,000 hours of watching people stream Stardew and falling asleep watching people play Stardew. I don't think this is that crazy of a take. I think Stardew is incredible and has arguably the best vibes of any game ever made, but if you don't like it because you don't think it has enough tension then that's a totally valid take. For lots of people, the lack of tension - or I guess the fact that you can effectively opt-in to the tension by how much min-maxing you decide to do, or how much combat, or setting yourself goals or whatever - is exactly why they enjoy it so much and what keeps them coming back time and time again. If that doesn't resonate, then sure you're not going to get why people are so hype for it. I hate games with permadeath or brutal difficulty or where the tension is part of the experience, which is why I don't like a lot of hardcore roguelikes like Isaac or FTL, or SoulsBorneRing games, because my own life is enough of an existential nightmare that I don't need that kind of strife infecting my hobbies. Different strokes for different folks and all that. I do disagree with the notion of "play a different farming game", because none of them hit like Stardew for me. None of the games that have been inspired by or tried to ape the Stardew magic have been anywhere near as successful at infiltrating my brain, even though I have had some fun with some of them (like Graveyard Keeper is kinda fun if a bit jank). And I'm not the biggest Animal Crossing fan which seems to be the biggest overlap game with Stardew, nor am I a big Minecraft/Terraria fan - I don't dislike them, just not quite my thing.

I agree with this guy on a lot of things, but due to the fact he slept with fish in his inventory, causing the fish to rot, everything he said while this was the case, makes it invalid. Like, time freezes while you are docked so why is he scared of birds flying over his head? He should be more scared of the behemoth fish that follows your boat around if you explore the gale cliffs. The value went down like 80%. If he slept any more he'd have rotting meat in his inventory which you can't even sell. I respect people that like a game enough to put 500 hours into it, instead of 3 hours into a game and doing shit like waiting fish to rot before selling it instead of fucking selling it while it still worth $120 or something instead of $20 and then saying the game was mid and never playing it again. It's not even the quest eel that you have to wait till it's rotting to turn in. He just sat there, bald, in his boat's cabin with the smell of rotting fish for 21 in game hours. And then when he did get the quest eel he didn't want to wait until it was rotting to turn in. All you got to do is sleep. Like where the fuck is he going? Back to the trader to sleep there? You can sleep wherever you can dock your boat. You don't even need to leave the dock just sleep there and go back to her. Literally clicks away. And this man is shitting on a farming game for not having much variation in playthroughs, while he's literally playing a different farming game that also doesn't have much variation in playthroughs with zero sense of irony.

Even though I have over 500 hours in Stardew Valley, I agree with NL on the initial point that there isn't any high stakes (unless speedrunning) but what was said after doesn't make sense. Minecraft doesn't really have any stakes either in a real sense, once you know what to do and are careful enough, there's no way you will die and even if you are doing something risky there is no punishment as you can just leave important items in chests. How is playing fifa for any amount of time better then stardew valley? One game is P2W and other isn't. If someone can pull enough enjoyment to play stardew valley for 1000+ hours, he's much better off then playing fifa for the same time and being abused by spenders or forking his own money and getting abused by whales who spend tens of thousands of dollars.

I expected to experience some righteous rage but I actually fully agree. It's a fun great game and I love it as an idea. That being said, I've got like 80 hours, I've never had a run hit the one year mark, and I've never really video game vibed with someone who has played for hundred of hours. AND I love Uncut Gems. He's speaking my truth.

Also chat brought up what's better, 1k hours in Stardew (single player game, with no replay value because of the lack of any stakes at all) vs FIFA 500 in FIFA (you get to interact with people and attempt to overcome them, this is like what people have loved doing forever) I hate FIFA but even then I would still agree with NorthernLion here

ive got 84 hours in stardew. I optimized my entire farm, got married and got filthy rich. I finished the collection house but only went halfway down the desert cave or whatever because that got too grindy. After that i just felt like there was nothing more to do. Sure i could do a second playthrough but that just feels boring to me when the game is already "beaten". Which sucks. Cant even play minecraft anymore because i will get bored after 30 minutes.

hot take but nl comparing terraria to minecraft and stardew valley from a gameplay standpoint is actually insane idk if its just the fact that i play on master mode or what but i feel like theres plenty of tension in terraria, you're dead if you touch the ground wrong & all progression is gated behind some actually pretty tough bosses
