I disagree with some of what NL is saying about GoW specifically but buried beneath is I think a genuinely great point. That gaming media outlets put so much value on big budget triple A games that they overshadow indie games that lack the same spectacle but excel in their gameplay, and that there’s this belief that the triple A game that’s ridiculously massive in scale and graphically advanced is seen as the superior gaming experience by default, and that more value is placed on games that try and do everything rather then just doing one thing exceptionally well. I’d say a better example to use as opposed to God of War is Cyberpunk, considering the game awards treated it similarly, including nominating it way too early despite being way less fun to play then many games released that year that weren’t nominated.
@omniimmortal99502 жыл бұрын
I'd agree that cyberpunk was nominated too early, but at least the developers have brought it up to where it should have been then. Like currently, it really is just right.
@suckapunch2 жыл бұрын
@@omniimmortal9950 CDPR never got it anywhere near where they advertised to be. The game still feels lifeless and empty. Individual stories and missions are great, but the world is so janky and un-cyberpunk. It feels more like Saints Row than it does cyberpunk. We should stop acting like we're misunderstood unique quirky fellas for our love towards indie games and AAA games are too below us all when in reality I can't go through a day online without someone shitting on how formulaic AAA games are. @@Blaurot Yeah, but the amount of people who think Marvel makes actually outstanding movies is less than those who think they're popcorn flicks. I think he nailed it with the point about maximalist game design. So many games nowadays try and do so many different things that the games become less fun to engage with. This includes a lot of indie games as well unfortunately. I can enjoy the odd game like that, but they are very tiring, and most of the time it's just more fun to play a game that does a couple of things very well. GoW is a prime example of this for me. The story might be good but the gameplay loop gets in the way of truly enjoying the story, and then all the other added mechanics like the rpg systems get in the way of just enjoying the combat. Plus it feels like they restricted the enjoyment of the game for the sake of immersion or world building.
@resinfruit8 ай бұрын
i also think that a ton of design elements in GoW are at odds. the way characters almost immediately will explain what to look at, what it is and where to go makes it seem like they think their target audience is toddlers and then will also have stat descriptions with 2 decimal point percentages expecting anyone to actually focus on them.
@theresnothinghere17455 ай бұрын
Maximallist can work perfectly well, its just needs to tie together well. Persona games and Yakuza games do this well, there's a lot of side activities in each but they aren't there just to have more activities but because it feeds into a deeper motivation in the games. In persona its all based around interacting with the world and letting the characters develop from it, in Yakuza its about making the city feel more alive with people doing all sorts of thing with their own stories. In both cases those additions are part of the core experience people want. But in God of War its much more questionable, I've never seen anyone who came to god of war for the puzzles or for the loot collection. Those mechanics exist more for the end goal of provding downtime or build variety but the implementation could be changed from loot to skill trees and puzzles to plataforming without really changing the experience as a whole. The developers themselves pretty much showed this is the case with them being so willing to have characters just tell you the puzzle solutions if you take too long, something that they would only do if the puzzles didn't really matter themselves.
@iconica95164 ай бұрын
i think its because some devs (mainly indie, i think that its just bad game design for the case of AAA games) feel the need to stand out in some way, which is totally fine, but they end up overdoing it and it just ends up being really bad overall COTL had this same problem early on with itw repetitive rougelike and fairly bland city builder, and they just focused and evolved the city building part and it did much better for itself

As someone who has actually *played* the new god of war, I really believe that the busywork that NL is alking about was barely present in the game. The side quests were really well written stories for the most part, or otherwise incredibly easy to avoid, and the main story puzzles weren't particularly egregious or time consuming in any way. Maybe I'm wrong, but this feels like NL reinforcing his own bias with an extremely limited sample size to go off of. Honestly his point that no one could really critique a currency/upgrade system for being too elegant & the general idea that if the same result can be done with fewer steps in terms of elements that aren’t the essential gameplay then why not isn’t bad. It is very immersive for a fantasy world to have multiple materials indeed but when we’re talking about the difference between a game like Minecraft & GoW maybe one can deal with a bit less of that granularity
@RozKounelakion2 жыл бұрын
I for one never got the upgrade materials rant when it comes to linear games like god of War because you don't have to stress about farming an enemy that drops the mats you're looking for or something like that. You just play the game and while going through it you will find the enemies that drop the mats you need and at some point you will go to the shop and be like "oh look I can upgrade my shit now". The game is literally made in a way where the materials you need *will* drop when the people that made it deemed it appropriate for them to drop. I can very much understand the same complaint for MMORPGs where you're missing one thing and have no clue what you have to farm to get it though
@christianj23618 ай бұрын
but if the game is so linear that you just gradually upgrade everything over time instead of farming, why even have the mechanic? Why not just automatically upgrade it or have only one currency instead of a variety if the variety doesn't even matter?

I personally would pick Elden Ring because I can spend a bajillion hours in that and not get bored, but there's an argument to be made for something like Inscryption or Cult of the Lamb. If Inscryption were nominated, then top of my list for sure. Cult of the lamb was fun as well and I got sucked into that for a while, but I can't say it's the best game of the year. It was just a fun way to spend my time for a while when I had nothing else to do. Also Super Auto Pets is extremely fun and I have no clue why.

In combat, the companions tell you what you need to do, if you don’t figure out a puzzle in time, the companions tell you what to do, it’s the exact opposite of say Elden Ring. In ER you go where you want and it’s up to the player to find a way to solve things. In GoWR, 95% of the game is spoon fed to the player.

Legit this. While the story and everything is great, it was definitely game journalist-proofed. And it kind of hurt the game because of it. Inclusiveness ain't bad but it does get tedious.

@@AtomicSlugg its fair to say you aren't a fan, but to says games shouldn't strive for that experience is quite pretentious. imo once perfected, video games will be a better medium for a narrative than movies. Movies have been falling off for a while, tv shows/streaming have been in the spotlight critically for at least the last 15 years, and thats been slowing down as of late too. i think the perfect game lies in the best of both worlds. if you find distaste in a well executed game solely for the fact that is has a compelling story, that wouldn't make sense. But i'll admid, that doesn't reallllly exist yet.

How has NL not realized yet that every award show is just an appreciation of the industry for the industry and not for the consumer. Its about creative, economical and technical accomplishments more than "is this game genuinely fun".

It’s a rant and it’s to be taken for fun, but honestly, GoW wouldn’t be a good game to watch NL play and he knows that. Not because of the ‘busy work’ (which is in all honestly pretty simple and fluid little puzzles that give just as nice a dopamine sugar rush as winning a round of SAP), but because he doesn’t stream stuff with lots of cutscenes and exposition. He relies on games that are a platform for his improvised Seinfeldian-esque stand up routine. You can’t talk over Kratos having a touching moment with his son effectively, and it’s hard to make fun of because it’s so well written. Emoji casino though, easy to chat over. The irony is that the puzzles in GoW would be his best parts, because he could actually quip over it (also ironic that both the egg and the belt-clipped head’s characters are defined by quipping) And yes, I know he streamed the horror game with the wendigos, but it was so meme-able and cheesily bad, that it made reasonable content (though I think it didn’t suit NL overall and didn’t watch most of it thusly)

If you think the Supermassive games don't fit his style, I'm sorry to say, you're dead wrong brother. I have a hard time thinking of a better fit. The House of Ashes playthrough is some of his funniest stuff in years.
@AllWordsAreDust2 жыл бұрын
Slight disagree on the reason being the game's heavy cutscenes, as my all time favourite NL playthroughs to follow have been the narrative ones (Deadly premonition, literally any David Cage game, even Life is Strange), but it's all about his commentary kinda skewering the game's writing, sometimes more lovingly than others. Though from what I know about the modern GoW games, it doesn't sound like the story/writing is absurd enough for this and it would more be like his Witcher 3 playthrough which yeah, didn't really work, and chat would probably be mad if he made fun of the writing anyway.

The hype around vampire survivors just confuses me. The game is cool for the first few runs, then you realize how little substance there is to the game. I get that not all games have to be incredibly deep or ambitious, but VS just gets boring after you realize there's barely any player input and you're basically just looking at the funny colors.

What's not to get? It's chewing gum in video game form, it gives you dopamine and it's cheap. So: hype. It doesnt necessarily have that much staying power but I played a lot. But if you only played a few runs, theres more substance to it than you think.

Unbelievably based take on GoW’s nomination. Most people who vote for it as Game of the Year won’t even have beaten the game yet

I mean, do you have to beat Elden Ring to realize that it should be nominated for Game of the Year?
@n8mo2 жыл бұрын
@@1wayroad935 I’m strawmanning here, but what if the ending really sucked and when you finally beat the game you were like “shit I wish I voted for something else” A lot people consider the second half of Elden Ring to be way grindier and less fun than the first half, so I feel like you should get at least 3/4 through a game before considering it for GOTY
