splitting 10+2 to 5+5+2 is just total madness when we do count in base 10. The appropriate splitting is 10 + 1 + 1. because addition is a count up, so +2 means count up twice. Another splitting is if you have 8+4. you can split it with basic count up (8+1+1+1+1) or rounding to base 10 (8+2=10, then plus 2= 12)

The person in chat is wrong. Common core is more like what is 22 + 12? Well we have 2 10s in the first one and one in the second one. And also two 2s. So it’s 10+10+10+2+2. Just using the definition of base 10 numbers to add them up. It’s teaching them how to translate their learning to other number systems like base 12 in music or base 2 in computer systems

You are disagreeing where to transition from "base math knowledge" to "alright we gotta start thinkin now", which is sensible. I think getting them confused earlier is better. When I think 10+2, I can imagine both a whiz kid memorizing their single digit adding and a finger counter getting stuck. It helps to understand that numbers can do crazy shit like splitting up, getting decomposed to turn 8+7-> 8+2+5 -> 10+5-> 15. I remember having a personal revelation when I realized that 9+x just meant (10 +x -1), and my teacher had no help with me on that. Being exposed to the fact that "the numbers don't matter, there is logic that you don't have to memorize" is the difference between getting ultrabodied at Algebra I and getting moderately confused until you just understand "solve for x" as another tool. If the 5 year old gets confused now, they won't have years of rote memorization in the way of understanding in 7th grade. If it works, we might be saved as a civilization. If Common Core becomes another rote process, then we're doomed.

I think the steps of 10+2 would be just having 0+2=2 in the ones place and 1+0=1 in the tens place, making 12. I didn't learn like that, but I can see how effectively teaching that decimal as the default is just a base like binary could make base conversion an easier concept.
