It's a bit of a controversial area that place. It used to be common land and lots of independent miners had their own small pits on it. Then Parliament stole the land from the people and divided up among landowners and politicians. It is how the Liddell family - the prior owners of Prudhoe Hall made a lot of money by claiming the land after a brief dispute with another politician and taking over all the independent mines as their own.
