Follow me underwater until the searchlights leave the shore.
Follow me underwater until we find what we're looking for.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
They found the pipeline through the soul in the soil.
I thought this place never changed
But now the reefs are bleeding swells of oil
And the forests are up in flames.
You fell asleep. You fell asleep while your bed burned.
Give me a reason.
Tell me why we lost our reason.
Tell me the truth, not an excuse.
'Cause we have everything to lose.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
There's a cancer in our lifeblood.
So silently it grew.
The streams of least resistance
Poison me and poison you.
There's a virus in the air
That drags the wind out from my chest.
I don't see a way out.
All I see is a sphere of unrest.
Show me a way out.
Follow me underwater until the searchlights leave the shore.
Follow me underwater until we find what we're looking for.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
You fell asleep. You fell asleep while your bed burned.
"We don’t inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children. Environmental preservation has always been something that’s important to me, but it only hit home in recent years from my travels just how dire of a state the world is in and how little our politicians are doing to stem the problem. I’ve been criticised for the lyrics to this song being on the simple side for Northlane, but that was intentional. It’s lyrically simple because I wanted it to be easy to understand because to me there aren’t many messages of higher importance than this one.
It really sunk in when I went on a trip to New Zealand last year with my partner. We travelled around the south island and visited a place called Aoraki and did a hike to the Fox Glacier. I’d seen pictures of this glacier before, I wasn’t prepared to see a lake with a few icebergs floating around in it. The Glaciers of New Zealand are deteriorating so fast due to global warming that the maps in these parks have to be constantly updated. How insane is that? when a feature that’s been around for thousands and thousands of years all but disappears in only a few. When you compare what it looks like now to only 25 years ago it’s hard to recognise the same landmarks. And this is only a small piece of what’s going on, I could write for days about it and still not cover all that I’ve seen with my own eyes.
As an Australian it saddens me that those in power have done so little for preservation when we pride ourselves on being so connected to the Earth. Our government’s approach to the problem is laughable. Even some key politicians once active in preservation no longer make an issue of it. This is just the tip of the iceberg of a global problem. If the earth dies, we die with it, along with the half of the world’s species that we haven’t killed off yet. We can’t afford to to be taking half-measures for our contribution to environmental preservation when our entire existence rests upon it’s wellbeing. And that’s why I felt obliged to write this song."
Josh Smith / Northlane

nic pettersen is an incredible fucking drummer. never played drums, but his style and the creative shit he does is just completely different than every other band and really makes me appreciate northlane shit. Adrian's vocals/lyrics were too. two characteristics this band used to have that really set them apart from everyone else.

I saw Northlane live a few months ago but was never really a huge fan of them. This song fits my tastes a lot better than their older stuff though! I love how well done the lyric video is. lol its crazy how it seems most people are completely missing/ignoring the message of the song, to the point of actually calling the lyrics bad. if it wasn't apparent already through the lyrics and clear visual images given in the video the song is about pollution and how we're treating the earth. Regardless of the music or lyrics (which I think are awesome) it's so important that a band is taking the time and effort to talk about this in their record.

Love that northlane can always make such a huge atmospheric sound. Even with the mixing the every one complained about on the last single, you have to admit they never fail to have a huge ensemble sound. Though they Mmy have lost the punch that we all loved in singularity, the heart and mellow vibe of the singles that have been released are starting to become my favorite songs by northlane. I miss Adrian, but wow Marcus is really pulling it off! Keep it up northlane! Still my number one favorite band and I'm proud to say that!

Travis Tourere I think the main parallel is the clean vocals which do seem to have a tone reminiscent of Chino, especially the softer parts, the chord work on the guitars also does give a similar feel although i'd say that Northlane have always had more interesting chord choices than most current bands anyway. That said I don't think that the heavier riffs really carry much of a Deftones feel, and the drumming certainly doesn't. All in all, definitely some influence in there, but saying that I don't think there are many modern heavy bands that don't draw some small influence from Deftones.

Lets not forget there are 4 other band members who havent changed?? Like why do some people think it revolves around the vocalist? The 4 others changed the band as much if not more than than marcus has. So dont go blaming/hating the new guy if there is a change in their music style.. How often does a great band make a new album which sounds the same as the old albums? Considering all they have been through i think this sounds like a fantastic album and still lives up to northlanes' general message about our planet throughout nearly all of their albums.

When I listened to Rot I thought it sucked to be honest, and wasn't sure that Marcus would fit into the band. But now that I've heard some more from them, and am beginning to see the direction they're taking, I realise that they're so much better now with Marcus than they ever were with Adrian. (Don't come at me with fangirl rubbish). I appreciate what Adrian did with the band, and obviously there wouldn't be a Marcus in Northlane if Adrian hadn't left, however, I feel Marcus just suits them so much better. The lyrics might be simple, but the message is powerful. This is amazing work from this band. So much improvement here. (In my opinion, of course.

Northlane is more about the message they are getting across which many of you seem to miss.

Ritchie Drama Yeah dude, its actually really striking once you read the lyrics. Very powerful imo! Many people actually fail to realize what the song means lol

Damian Karan Pretty much every song Northlane has done is about the state of the world, government, etc.

Some of their stuff is good. I'm going to a show in August. i'm mostly there to see Oceans Ate Alaska and In Hearts Wake. But this isn't bad.

I definitely don't think it's bad, but Northlane used to be my favorite music to jam really hard in my car and this new music isn't jammable. It's really soft sounding and I guess I'll listen to it laying in bed but this shit just doesn't pump me up. Sounds nice though. Mixed feelings.

For anyone that don't know once again the meaning of mostly all their songs are about the environment. Same goes with bands like parkway drive & in hearts wake.
