their first album is still the northlane i miss.. once they did the youtube contest tryout stuff and got their current singer the screaming faded away.. and what other emotion are you left with? sadness? depression? no more anger from the past bleeding thru, or pissed off hope that we’ll never again make the same mistakes we once did.. etc.

Marcus said in an interview that they wrote this before obsidian they just couldn't perfect it and make it work until now. This song is likely what actually paved the way for obsidian.

I just noticed that the constant beat and rhythm from the bass comes from the breakdown from Cypher off Obsidian but transposed and made a little faster. I can't get over how they could turn that breakdown into a whole song. These guys are geniuses.

This is one of the songs where I bet they found a great chorus and then built the song around it. It has similar vibes to echo chamber and I’m definitely looking forward to having this song sub in for it in future set lists. Sounds like it’s definitely going to be a good groove live to chill out to before going into another heavy track

To be fair, Marcus Bridge is actually a fan of this stuff as he was a big fan of bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Underoath, From First To Last etc and has done covers of songs from Sleeping With Sirens and Paramore. Other than that, I enjoy this song and this is one of the best tracks I've heard this month

This song is beautiful, can't wait to see what's coming next! These guys created their own metal genre and it's always so good, they never disappoint, whatever if it's heavy or not! Its always fresh and perfectly done, love them. Also the end looks so sad for some reason, I wonder if it will be like a sort of 2-parts song in the album. I know some people are complaining because no breakdown, I personally don't care it will be for an other song, this one doesn't need one ♥️

This is a reference that'll be lost on anyone who isn't an aussie around the age of 40 who was into the electronic scene in the mid 2000s, but getting MAJOR Infusion vibes from that 'breakdown' - specifically the album 6 Feet Above Yesterday, tracks like Love And Imitation and Feeding From The Hand. Not a bad thing at all, it's a killer album. Much more dance oriented but with that more aggressive buzzsaw vibe to the synths

I adore the trancey chord progressions with the synths, particularly in the chorus - it's from that late 90s/00s era of trance music, and it really contrasts with the heaviness/emotion of the lyrics and the band

I agree with your take. North lane have been one of my fav since singularity. I fell off a bit but liked what I’ve heard the pst few years. I think this song will be a taste of what the rest of their next album will be. It wasn’t a banger for me but gets me excited for what’s to come! I find this exploration of metalcore to be really exciting - I was tired in the late 2010’s of breakdown-core. Excited to see new genres, song structures, and sounds being implemented into metalcore.

I only found Northlane just before they released Obsidian, the first track I heard was Clockwork and I loved it. So I checked out their older stuff which is very samey, then came along Obsidian and blew everything else out of the water for me. It's similar to Parkway Drive's story, until Ire, it was very samey and then Ire came out and just blew their older music away for me. I love it when bands progress like this.

A southwestern Ontario buddy joining you on this for my first listen. Northlane became a different band when Marcus joined. I was a huge fan of Northlane in the Adrian days...with each album after Marcus came in I lost more interest. Simply due to my own music tastes! This song here felt disconnected...like it was searching for a home but never found it. A shallowness that showed through. But when thats separated from everything...each band members amazing talents shine through. Theyre all amazing including Marcus. I just feel like this, when it came together, didn't really work.

I kinda get it now on my 4th listen (didn't like it at first), still not really my thing, but I see where it's groovy and you can get into it. My take, is it doesn't matter if I like it or not, if new fans are made because the electronic crowd gets into it, or people just genuinely like it and then slowly learn what metalcore is (like I've done the past year, catching up on everything I've missed out on, I had my metal taste set for years before), that is all the matters. Get more people into metalcore, this scene needs these songs to try and make this genre and scene the best it could be
