Felt the same way honestly! Loved some of his other reviews but missed the mark somewhat imo, which is gonna happen now and then. I think Northlane is the only band people get away with comparing production quality to their newer records and parading it as 'critique'. Imagine trying to do that with Meshuggah for example. Granted those who are in love with earlier Northlane likely got into them before the Marcus era so will always be a little partial towards Adrian albums.

I don’t get your criticism of the production, haha. Every instrument has a clear pocket and a lot of attention is given to details and atmospheric layering. Moreover, the guitars and drums sound amazing. Sure, it is different from their more “sludgy” sound now, but I don’t think it is fair to discredit the great production work on this album Supplementary: the sound of this album is unrivaled with regards to its atmosphere and guitar sound and has inspired a lot of other bands. The most obvious one would be Invent,Animate

Hey dude, great video! To clarify, the speech in the Singularity is by Terence McKenna, he died in 2000, the sample they used is a recording of one of his speeches, that's why it sounds the way it does. It was definitely a grower for me. First time i listened to it was 2019 (slightly before the release of Alien, IIRC i discovered NL in winter 18-19) and it didn't say much to me. I saved it and barely listened to it again. Then some time in 2020, i think around the pandemic/late spring, i listened to it again and it became one of my favorite core albums of all time (and definitely in my A ranking of albums in general). It's by far my fav NL album. It's the guitar layering that does it for me, the part in Windbreaker with 3 different guitar layers that "somehow" (just Jon's genius lol) work is mindblowing. And so are most of the riffs.

Just to add on, I remember listening to this back around 2014 or 2015 when I was at my school Vermont Secondary College in Australia (the same school as some of the member of Thornhill went to as well!) and I was first introduced to Northlane when one of the bands from the school rock program covered the song Masquerade and pretty sure they did Genesis and Scarab too, and Ben Maida from Thornhill was on the drums, so you can tell they were inspired by Northlane!

The comparison of Sempiternal to Singularity is a stretch. While both albums came out in 2013, Singularity actually released first. I don’t think NL is biting BMTH on here, and vice versa. Just a stream of consciousness moment on the track Scarab that made Shadow Moses sound similar to it. I think NL was heavily influenced by bands like Karnivool and Parkway Drive, in particular PW because when Horizons and Deep Blue came out it basically elevated the metalcore to bigger audiences.

Volumes' first album Via was huge at the time, and one of the original influences for this style of djent instrumentals. If you haven't listened to that album yet, you have to. It's iconic I think at this point, and stands out separately from all the other work they released. The mix isn't the best by modern standards, but it does have its own appeal and charm, and still sounds good. It matches the time it came out in.

Goes into detail about what they went through after Adrian left and the emotions building up to the writing of Alien. The background music actually ended up becoming the fade out used on Xen. As for their members, I believe only Adrian and their original bassist left. They go a lot into their history and member changes in their documentary. Agree with a lot of your sentiments here though. This is great as an isolated album, but as a part of Northlane's discography, they've come a long way and I LOVE where they're at now.

Okay, hear me out: back 9-10 years ago, the composition of metalcore music was different, more complex. Today's popular hits from like Falling in Reverse, Issues, Motionless in White (whatever) they all follow the same pattern pop music laid out: intro, verse, chorus, now repeat that then breakdown then more chorus and if we are lucky, an outro. Just compare this pattern to early Northlane or Asking Alexandria for a good example too. Re-listening these 2010s albums now the difference is so obvious and actually these old albums feel refreshing after all these pop-styled metal tracks.

a lot of these old metalcore albums have similar production, a lot has to do with the budget, but i honestly feel like it gives these old albums a special feeling to them, nostalgic

When I first heard their early stuff nearly a decade ago, I wasn't a fan. It took me years until I relistened and now those two first albums are my top albums ever. Amazing lyrics, amazing vocals and killer instrumental. Personally their sound went down over time I think, at least instrumentally. I like Marcus a lot though

Honestly one of the few times I have to strongly disagree with you here. I don't get where you hear Linkin Park at all in this record, not in any way. The Oli Sykes comparisons I can kinda understand but BMTH hadn't even released Sempiternal yet when this album came out so if anything the bands simply share inspirations. Northlane couldn't have been influenced by a project that wasn't even out yet. And the production on this record still stands the test of time, the instrumentals sound phenomenal. Sure they weren't taking as many experimental liberties but this decade old album is still so rich.

To quote the booklet page for the song Singularity that comes with the CD, the page reads: "Traditionally the word 'Singularity' refers to a theoretical moment in evolution where humankind's technology reaches a point that is so advanced that it is impossible to imagine what life would be like at that point in time. Much like a black hole or the Big Bang theory, the Singularity remains a mysterious point that is beyond human description or comprehension." Also the voice you hear in the song is a quote from Terence Mckenna. Have a good day everyone :)

During windbreaker, as you were saying, if you have listened to this band around the time this was made. You may have been blown away. And I feel like I speak for a lot of people who have listened to Northlane since and before, that's exactly what it was like. I absolutely adored this band from discoveries and singularity. Then Marcus came along and I fell more in love with this band. I wish you could've heard this like some of us did back then. 🤙🤙

Since you’re listening to older album, I really think As Hell Retreats album Volition is one you might like. It’s a concept album that’s very deep about a boy losing his mother, tossing and turning in his faith, and ultimately deciding to attempt suicide so he could be with his mother. Truly a fantastic listen.

At the Time, this álbum changed the game, everyone started ripping them or Architects off, their riffs AND drum parts were pretty unique. For me Its a masterpiece, and Northlane hasn't came with anything better, they are still a great band too. But Adrian input on the lyrics marked my life for the better.

Love to see this album getting attention years on, probably one of my top 5 and one that has gotten me through many tough times (currently struggling a lot with my first breakup - from the grieving to the feeling that I’m now lost with no purpose so may have to revisit hahah). The speech in the second to last track is actually just an excerpt from a speech by Terence McKenna, a philosopher from the 90’s that talked a lot about psychedelics (mainly DMT and psilocybin), metaphysics and life - not many good quality sources remain so it is gonna sound a bit shit and I understand the criticism despite loving the dude and his work😅 To me the album is his narrative journey of how he overcame the feeling everyone gets in their early 20’s - from feeling lost and without purpose, to having key shifts in perspective (probably inspired by a few DMT trips - for one the Terence McKenna excerpt but also the lyrics are littered with references, for example “dimethylated spirits you’ll find” - DMT standing for DiMethylTriptamine), realising what he wants in life and that there is much more positivity in the world than he previously thought, to moments of self reflection in masquerade, to then being able to move forward a better person, one with the world living on it ready to fulfill the purpose he has realised. Truly an amazing album, and I don’t knock you for the criticisms/lack of knowledge on small things on it - I liked hearing your perspective as a first time listener nearly a decade on, and fuck those who do just because you expressed a different perspective on a media form which is open to interpretation✌️

I'm sure someone has mentioned it, but the voice at the end was a clip of Terrence McKenna. The clip was probably taken sometime in the 90s. He's quite brilliant- check him out if you're interested.

Why are you focusing on the production so much? was great at the time of release. It appears like you don't know that much about composition or aren't confident enough to comment on it. What sets this album apart is the writing. Great use of theatrical elements, good space and amazing lyrical flow. This album is all feels, something they've never really been able to recapture in later releases (not bashing the newer albums)

I don't think I've ever disliked a single Northlane track in any form whatsoever, let alone any of their albums - With each being unique in its own special way. That being said, I completely disagree what you said about the production, respectfully. This is one of my favourite albums ever production wise, along with Lost Forever and All Our Gods by Architects. The kind of production used in newer albums with EDM elements is completely different and would not be fitting whatsoever. The guitar tone in this album is perfect and thats why similar tones have been used by Jon in their two most recent albums (In my opinion). Favourite song has to be windbreaker, some of the best riffs in the genre in that song. P.S. I think the comparison you drew to Shadow Moses comes from the tuning used for this album, which is the same as that song (Drop A#), but with a low F on the seventh string.

I know I’m a little late to the party here, but in case you see this, the voice actor for the monologue at the end sounds weird because it’s not actually a voice actor. It’s a sample of a talk in the 90’s by ethnobotanist, Terence McKenna. (Hence the Bill Clinton and Michael Jackson name drops)

on blast beats during Dream Awake: "I personally am soo sooo grateful that they left this element to their sound in the past, I don't ever really like these up-tempo segments, whether be blast beats, whether be these kinda gallopy sounds.. ..I'm glad if anything Northlane have at least for their latest two albums, *especially Obsidian* , have just left that in the past" meanwhile at Obsidian - opens with a blast beat heavy song 🤦‍♂

So harsh with the "production" but i guess its normal when you listen to lots of modern metal. When i go back to albuns like this, i do also notice the difference but it will never make me judge it like a thing of the past, like it is obsolete. Like when you said you've heard it before, Worldeater... Yeah dude back when this released, that song and all the others absolutely crushed souls. They still do even for firsttime listeners but metal is just different now and this band still one of the best ever, old or new songs.
