Hi Danielle. I was binge watching your garden tours AGAIN 😊. I don’t remember what the time stamp is where you talk about your fave rose suffering from black spot (the rose on the side of your home (that was already there when you bought your home) - I read in one of my gardening books that if you plant salvia underneath roses, the plant acts as a natural fungicide and prevents black spot on roses. Hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing your lot size. I am growing cut flowers on 1.5 acres and have been so hesitant to actually claim to have a flower farm because of the tiny size of my farm. You’ve really inspired me to grow as I already have been and not only in rows. I love how tall your comfrey grows tall. Mine grows low to the ground and crawls out

I totally understand! You're a flower farmer! We all have different journeys and different lot sizes, but if your growing flowers and selling them for a profit you are farming flowers! How about a climbing hydrangea for your front garden? it would climb up the house and it has interest all year long, with a lovely lace cap flower and twining interesting bark that is on display in winter. It was the first hydrangea I ever noticed and I have been trying to grow one here, but so far not much luck. I think our winters are too cold here in Ontario, zone 3B.

Loved your yard! Your roses with Black Spot, use need oil when no flowers and continue 1 time a week thru all stages of growth. Pick off all leaves on bush and on ground. Discard the sick foliage. I have researched this advice. Ronda Hill

Loved your garden tour. You're a bit ahead of me as I'm further north and in less of a shelter so my peonies aren't out yet. Definitely will be getting some autumn color salvia. 29:50 I’ve eliminated black spot problem by replacing store-bought synthetic (petroleum based) rose food fertilisers with organic compost. An inch of compost mulch around the base twice a year (early spring and late summer) makes all the nutrients in the soil available to the plant. Compost also contains good bacteria that inhibit bad bacteria that attack roses. Synthetic fertilisers shove nutrients down the plant’s throat, forcing it to flower profusely, which creates stress for the plant and weakens it’s immune system. Such artificial boost makes roses susceptible to pests and fungal diseases.

Thanks for the wonderful May garden tour, I always enjoy seeing what's new in your garden. You had mentioned an Amish woman told you that her Listianthus winter over, did she give you any details on that? I am also in zone 6B and had thought about growing them but felt that our winters were too cold. Thanks!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joyce! Yes she gave me some really great information. She told me that her lisianthus is growing near the side of her house. She raked leaves onto them in the late fall, and when she removed the leaves this spring they were still there. I'm thinking they are really a hardy annual in 6b. Especially if we get a mild winter like this year.

@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens Thanks Danielle, sounds like she has a little microclimate on the side of her house that keeps those roots warm over the winter and the leaf mulch probably helped too. I may have to try out this method!

I have a question on your berggarten sage. I am growing that as well and I am wondering if you cut that down every spring? I would say about 3/4 of last year‘s growth appears to be dead but there is new growth way down at the bottom. I’m just wondering how to prune that now in the spring. Any advice would be much appreciated!
