Great video, Bill! I really appreciate seeing the process and the way you nurture the details in your negative. I’d love to hear more specifically about how you manipulate your negatives to achieve the toning you want in them. Keep ‘em coming!

Hi Becky! Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestions. I had a couple other requests for that as well, so I’ll cover that in more detail in the next video. Thank you again!

Bill, great to hear you digging deep and talking about your personal motivation. I’ve been a professional for forty years, I love photography more now than I have ever done. A few years ago I decided to stop looking for commissioned work and concentrate on my own personal artistic development. It was the best move I ever made. Thankfully I still get a few royalties from the books I’ve done over the years but you know the income stream from the photography profession has very much changed in recent years. If you continue to produce work from the heart, like I know you do, then it will always find an audience. Producing a photo book printed in the conventional way is fraught with pitfalls and most often they never even break even, unless you are a very well known artist. Good for the ego, but bad for the bank balance. I love the portfolio idea, especially in a nice presentation case. Looking forward to seeing this in the future.

That is a stunning result! And I loved the ramble at the beginning to explain everything. Looking forward to part II!

It is very good idea to start with a smaller print to understand the negative and make final print. I will definitely follow your idea. It is a great lesson for me. Unfortunate at present I can't imagine to buy any Palladium so I am working with Silver. Kalli Type keeps me busy, may be again I will be able to buy Palladium.

I’ve been wanting to get back into k types myself. Experiment with them as a base for the gum. Keep me posted on your outcome.

I will definitely show you my Kalli print. I want to do gum over it. You can help me. In first week of January I will go to shoot a fare on the bank of the river Ganga at Allahabad. I will start printing returning home. Hopefully I will be back with some good pictures.

Does talking a digitial photo of the negative work better than scanning on a high rez flatbed scanner ? Your way seems so much easier. I basically gave up on scanning my negs using a flatbed because it is just such a pain to do. If I may ask, where did you get that small light table. I have capture one as well and I may try to do this. Thanks.

Hi John. In my opinion, doing my “scanning“ this way is much better than on a flatbed. I purchased the light table off of B&H website. You want an LED table For the even light. This one is a porta trace. I think I paid about 85 bucks for it.

Hello , I appreciate your great work, only I need to understand you do this work as a hobby or what else . What is the use of your prints ?
@BillSchwab
@BillSchwab 7 ай бұрын
Not a hobby, although I would do it even if I wasn’t making a living from it. I worked many years as a commercial photographer and now my work is handled by some galleries and is included in many private and museum collections around the world.

Another question Bill. How does your digital scanning set up compare with a scan from say an Epson flatbed scanner?
@BillSchwab
@BillSchwab 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Barrie. It works really well. I am sold on it. I’ve been comparing some of my older scans that I thought were safe back ups of negatives and they are not. Not in comparison with what I’m able to do with this.

So pleased to find somebody else doing several trial prints to get to the final print. Thought it was just me being either a bad printer or too fussy. Reassuring to see you doing exactly the same as me.

Very interested in your capture process using Capture One. Currently, I capture a raw file, import into LR, and convert with Negative Lab Pro. All subsequent editing is done in PS. How do you convert your raw file? Thanks, Bill.
