NORTHSEAKAYAK - The Run

These are the conditions I waited for! This is the playground where the Valkyrie comes alive! Nothing less than force 7 WSW, which means that the wind blows parallel to the shore, and so are the waves. To get the best run, I paddled 3kms offshore, got past the Trapegeer buoy and from there I aimed for Nieuwpoort harbour.

If you want to paddle downwind, a surfski is a better tool. Much better steering, easier to get on waves. Ultimately safer too.

Hi Kayasper, if you scroll back through my FB feed you will see I have been paddling a Valkyrie in very similar conditions to Dimitri. I have even gone to the trouble of installing an anenometer on an offshore reef to get accurate wind conditions for kayak testing. My experience of the Valkyrie is very similar to Dimitri's and I wrote about it extensively in Ocean Paddler. The Valkyrie hull is based on the Pyranha Octane/Think Nitro surfskis. Like all surfskis there is not much rocker in the bow but considerable rocker in the stern. The Valkyri/Octane/Nitro actually has more bow rocker than my Think Zen surfski. The other difference between a surfski and a Fast Sea Kayak like a Taran is that surfskis have a lower bow volume so that they pierce through the wave in front and do not slow down as much as a kayak with a more buoyant bow which tries to climb over the wave in front. The bow of the Valkyri is identical to the bow of the Octane/Nitro surfsk except that the front hatch on the Valkyrie scatters spray everywhere. The other thing to note is that the Valkyri does not like a lot of weight up front on a camping trip. Interestingly, two very experienced sea kayakers, who I lent the Valkyrie to, have since bought surfskis though they had never considered them before, indeed they both refused to try the Octane and my Zen!!. I think that there is a great deal that the sea kayak and surfski worlds can learn from each other. Dimitri...FANTASTIC video :)

Wouldn't have the same hull speed as an FSK though for that kind of downwind run. Valkyrie looks great there. Would be ideal conditions for a Taran too.

In comparison to Scorpio LV, which one is better in very rough (large waves from different directions) sea? Which one out of the two would be better in the surf? Would love to buy the Valkyrie, but I don't think I will be able to test one in my area any time soon. BTW, thanks for writing the review article, just wanted to find out a little extra info.

Hi there, both of them are good in rough conditions, no doubt about that. You need to know what you want to do with it. The Scorpio is to my opinion the most versatile polyethylene boat you can buy. The Valkyrie is a specialist boat made for speed. It is operated with the rudder while the Scorpio does not need it. The Valkyrie excels in downwind speed and overall speed. The Scorpio is more agile when it comes to steering without rudder but with proper technique. Hope this helps? Cheers!👌👍

Right now I only have a very limited (recreational) kayaking experience, so I'm trying to jump head first into this hobby. So sounds like if I want a good all around, reasonably fast, capable kayak that will handle like a "typical" sea kayak I should get the Scorpio. If I don't mind a kayak that handles a little less conventionally, slightly less stable, more or less dependent on the rudder for precise handling, requires a more steep learning curve, and a little less manageable in the surf I can get the Valkyrie. As a reward, I will get one of the fastest non-racing kayaks available, and something that carries the name "Valkyrie". :) Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Thank you! I tether myself because I don't want to loose my kayak when offshore. During this downwinder it was wind against tide. If I loose my boat, it will drift away with the wind while I drift in the opposite direction with the current. No way that I can swim back to it. Surfskiers do the same also. I hope this makes sense? Yes, indeed, I use a piece of bungie. It is in fact also my short tow line. I'm still able to roll, or do a wet exit without problems. Once I'm out and get my bearings, I detach to perform a self-rescue.😊👌
