Hi Ian, Thank you for your support. I know... there are Always people who are jealous, or don't get enough attention, or.... I can live with it, I know there are more people like you and me than there are such people. I watch a lot of videos myself, and if I find one that isn't good at all, I still keep it to myself out of respect for the person that has put his or her time in it. Cheers, Dimitri

Sometimes self taught is better. The “rules” can stifle natural, graceful movement that attaints the same results. Because our bodies are all a bit different, I believe your variations on the movements are safer for you. Your movements are both productive and beautiful so I’d hate to see you change too much just to obey all the rules. Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing with the world!

Well thank you very much for the compliments. I'm sure it will work out for you to, you just need to practice enough on all those things. It works better if you have someone that films your training, that way you can see if it looks the same as in the video. It's a good way to train yourself. Make sure to make a clear difference between edging and leaning, your boat reacts also diferent. Don't forget to have fun! Best regards, Dimitri

Add this to the many thanks for making your video! As a new paddler, it is exciting to watch if anything to dream and know what is possible. I experienced my first rapids yesterday, just Class II baby rapids haha--but oh the thrill! As a beginner, and without classes around me that I know of, I have taken to KZbin to learn the basics. This video clearly is way out of my league...for now! Thank you for adding fuel to my fire! If you (or anyone else) recommend any particular safety and/or basics videos for a recreational paddler who dreams of sea kayaking and wants to learn the foundational skills the right way, I am all ears. Thank you for the beautiful video! Inspiring.

Hey Dimitri@@Northseakayak, Happily reporting that I finally found out the right motion for hanging draw and learnt it with my trusty Gumotex Rush. 😁 It is only a 355x81cm kayak so it's slower and decelerates quicker but the maneuver still works with it. Also, got a cheat code - I now use a Greenland paddle. 😇 It skyrocketed my learning, especially after nailing the canted blade forward stroke technique. Edging is also much easier now (yes, I can edge that flat hull kayak). 😁 Greetings from the UK, Tom

Having quickly watched your instructional video, I have a few comments to some of your manoeuvres. My direct feedback is often misunderstood. I appreciate what you do, and you reach a lot of paddlers. Hence, whatever you think about my comments, keep up the good work! Without further ado, here are my quick and preliminary comments: Sculling draw: • Use your torso rather than just your arms. It is common to use just one's arms, but it is incorrect. (Remember to maintain the paddler's box.) • Keep your paddle shaft more vertical in the water. • Remember to maintain the same blade angle when moving your paddle blade backwards and forwards in the water. Bow draw: • Immerse the entire steering blade in the water. • The angle of the steering blade to the kayak should be less than 45 degrees. • The angle of the shaft to the water should be about 45 degrees. • You make an excellent viewing window, but would benefit from a slighly higher upper hand. • Edge your kayak more markedly on the opposite side of where you are going. • Use a complete/full sweep stroke from bow to stern on the opposite side of where you are turning, and maintain the same edge throghout the turn. 360 • Do not change your edge from one side to the other before you have set up (i.e. rotated your torso) to the other side. Otherwise, you will lose a lot of the kayak's turning momentum. • Your reverse sweep is close to superb, but you could benefit from a sharper and longer forward sweep stroke. Cross-bow rudder • Keep your top arm closer to your body (to prevent injuries in case you e.g. hit something in the water) Cowboy (scramble): • Why not use the cowgirl, which is much faster than the cowboy? Or even a re-entry and roll? • Many paddlers prefer to keep their spray skirt handle in their mouth to avoid getting stuck on the back deck while moving forward and make it easier to reattach the spray skirt when you are safely seated in the cockpit. • Many instructors would recommend using one's thighs to push your body forward instead of your arms, i.e. move your knees forward, press them against the kayak, and push yourself forward using your legs rather than your arms. • Keep your body lower while pushing forward across the back deck. Use your paddle to brace and for stability. Sideslip (or equivalently, a hanging draw): • Move your blade in the water a few centimetres back to move your kayak more sideways while moving forward. • Why not edge your boat into the stroke and use a high brace turn angle on your blade when doing the hanging draw? This would make your kayak move much more pronouced sideways while going forward. Low brace: Instructors typically recommend looking down on the side where you immerse your blade.

Hi Karl, Your feed-back is much appreciated. It is certainly not misunderstood. I will read it a few times and see to improve myself with your feed-back. We always strive to perfection, so I will take your comment into account. However, you must know that we never took one class or lesson from anyone. When I started sea kayaking, there wasn't much to do over here in Belgium. So I did everything by trail and error. It's good to get some well-meant criticism! So thanks! Cheers, Dimitri

I had to do the same for years when I started in 2000. I didn't have access to anyone to teach me at a higher level so I read books and watch what videos were on DVD at the time. There really was nothing on the internet yet. There wasn't much video, but I found some old Greenland vids and older sea kayak videos. I eventually took an ACA instructor course and got my level 4 open ocean in 2003. I think the video analysis is really the best thing to do.I have hundred of hours of vide. Most of my video today is so that I can learn and get better. What I did was to place the camera on a dock and an object in the background. Then you can see if you are performing correctly by having stationary object and camera on dock. The pattern from what I remember was forward stroke to camera into a low brace, followed by forward /reverse sweeps both sides, draws and sculling draw, low brace, high brace, roll, paddle backwards, etc. I learned that all strokes have 5 parts: shaft angle to water, torso rotation, hand positions, boat position, and blade. If you are not using all 5 then you might be missing a component. I would argue there is two more highly critical and that is knee position and active foot with hip / torso rotation. Most people turn at their stomach thinking that is torso rotation, but technically you want to feel your hips move including moving your butt on the seat left and right. Your foot will press, dropping your knee and this will push your hip and rotate the whole upper body. Instead of pushing / pulling with arms think about moving the blade by using your feet to rotate your core. This makes you more powerful driving the boat with leg and hip power.

Dimitri, you are a superb paddler! Great videos, great rough water skills! I, too, am self taught and learned adjustments to my technique from extremely seasoned coaches with a very non-prescriptive approach. With bow draw, I just want to add to not extend the active blade arm but bend it to maybe 110 or so degrees. Upper hand forehead level. Boost the turn with torso rotation towards the active blade. Achieve the active blade angle with torso rotation, not by cocking up the wrist. With hanging draw and stern rudder, emphasize torso rotation towards the active blade. This video is 2 years old, by now you’re probably doing everything right. Cheers!

Excellent technique! Very helpful video! I'm new to kayaking and would like to be half as good some day so i will be practicing the maneuvers you show in this video. I just bought a point65 mercury to try to tour the coasts once im more experienced. Quick question though. Could you please highlight the difference between the bow rudder and cross bow rudder and its uses? I wasn't able to catch the difference myself! Thank you so much!
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Congratulations with the purchase of your new kayak! The key to succes (regarding those techniques) is training, training and training.... But most important, don't forget to have fun, it will be twice as rewarding then! :-) As for the two types of bow rudders; The effect of both techniques is the same, if you edge the turning will be faster. The difference is in your force of putting the blade in the water. The normal bow rudder gives a lot of force on your arm and shoulder. The cross bow rudder is a more powerfull posture, you want feel a thing on your arms or shoulders. It is a different muscle group that you put at work. Try it sometimes and you will feel the difference immediately. Make sure to keep the angle of the blade as little as possible at first, you wouldn't be the first to capsize that way. If you feel the water pulling at the blade, then you can make the angle of the blade a bit wider. I hope this helps?Good luck training on these things, hope to hear from you again. Cheers, Dimitri

Dimitri, you are a true kayak whisperer! One of the best and most inspiring videos I've ever seen! I didn't think one could do such complex maneuvers in such a long kayak. I am a new owner of a Solstice GT. Do you think I could develop such maneuvers using such a kayak? I also own an Eddyline Skylark (12 footer), and I probably would start practicing on that one!
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you so much for your compliments, much appreciated! Good to hear that you're the proud owner of a true sea kayak. I think the Solstice has a little less rocker than the boat I use. That's not a bad thing, it means that's a bit less agile but keeps better on track. You can however do all the displayed manouvres with your kayak to. The only difference will be that every kayak responds different. Train it a lot, don't forget to edge or lean (huge difference between the two). When not edging you will have a lot more trouble changing direction. I wish you all the best, it's lots of fun, believe me! :-) Cheers, Dimitri

I just bought a Valley Nordkapp that will probably allow me to practice these maneuvers much better. It's been now a little more than a full year since I started kayaking and I got my first rolls under my belt on December 2nd. It felt like such an achievement, and on the first day that I tried them! I did them in an Epic 18X which I have since sold (I couldn't control it in rough seas).
