I'm a certified sea kayak instructor and these techniques do not work on most sea kayaks that don't have cockpits that giant. You need to lay belly down on the back deck, stabilizing with your paddle, slide your feet into the boat, and then pivot over when your butt gets above the seat. A paddle float is also an highly important bit of safety equipment that should be highlighted and make the whole thing far easier. For people without strong upper bodies (meaning, most of you), you cannot readily pull yourself up on the back of the kayak like he does here. You need the paddle float to get your leg up on and then can slide onto the back of the boat and follow the above directions. Of course, learning to roll is best of all but an advanced skill. I've taught many hundreds of people safety procedures and recommend you read up if you don't believe me.

@@salishwanderer7869 these days most kayaks have keyhole cockpit, and indeed ; older models have smaller ocean cockpits. Nevertheless,this drill is great for keyhole cockpit. We have spend a lot of time and energy in multiple videos on the topic, so if you scroll to our most popular video, you can see how it's done your way.
@@Northseakayak Smaller cockpits are fine for people who will never encounter rough seas or waves and do not expect water in their lap. Traditional ocean going kayaks have the smallest possible openings so that the spray skirt doesn't get blown in by waves. So it's not just a modern vs. older cockpit question, but a use of the boat question. Stay safe everybody and do your research!

Aloha. Your series has opened up ocean kayaking for me in many ways. Next step is surfing larger waves. I am using a 15' kayak similar to what you use except it doesn't have a cockpit, just a seat in a depression on the deck. Great for warm water. .

Surfers have known this for 50 years. I always tether no matter what the conditions. If I’m out I’m tethered. I wouldn’t have it this short though. Better with a longer length stowed inside your deck skirt at the seat so it can unfurl when you bail and gives you space from the boat in case the waves pick it up and you’re upside down.

Great video as always. The only thought I have and teach is that the call for help is made as soon as we realize the paddler is non-responsive. That time between calling immediately vs waiting until we did the scoop could make a life/death difference. Once the situation is under control we can render care, monitor, and update rescue as needed. The added bonus is that if you cannot contain the situation (1:41) or conditions deteriorate, help will already be on the way.
@Northseakayak2 ай бұрын
Hi @@robertnissenbaum ! Thank you for your support! Yes and no on making the call. It depends on the situation. If there are only limited rescuers, we do it as shown in this video. If you have a bigger group, than it is something different as you can do both tasks atthe same time. This was here not the case. We always train for conditions, even if the sea is flat calm. Holding the casualty with airways free while still in the water will ask for more trouble, chance that the rescuer will capsize (casualty holding on the side is not stable). So we rather invest one of two minutes in containing the situation before proceeding. Also, not everyone can speak smoothly over the radio. This gives the radio operator time to asses all necessary intel before the call. So it is investing and saving time in the end. We also know from experience that the Coast Guard will start a full conversation with a lot of extra questions. This means that you cannot use the person doing the comms for anything else. This is all in a nutshell, but I do make this makes sense? All the best! Big hug from the Belgian West Coast!🤗👌
