@conor.macdowell10 жыл бұрын
Not really 'picking'... that's called strumming.
@kylefer10 жыл бұрын
cmacdowe Well if you know how to play the song it is somewhat strumming but you have to hit certain strings at a certain time between chords so its a form of active strumming that some call picking because you pick certain strings to end and start the strum on with your pick.
@conor.macdowell10 жыл бұрын
Not really, it's a continual strumming pattern while mutting the un-played strings and a lot of pull-offs.
@kylefer10 жыл бұрын
Indeed, but its mainly the e string that is left unplayed, I did a guide video on how to play this song a year or two ago, Ill have to go look at it.

Do you know why its not struggling or being affected by his guitar? Its because it flows out of him like a river.. its natural.. pure music. He doesn't have to think about cords, notes, pitch, words.. Thom is a rare talent.. Those of us who are able to appreciate his music are lucky. We are watching and listening to someone who has the same make up of a Mozart or Beethoven.. someone who can transcend cliche thoughts of how music "should" sound. What we are hearing is a manifestation of a soul.

A beautiful sentiment, but decidedly wrong. If you told Thom to his face that he didn't "have to think" about chords, notes, pitch etc. he'd likely be a little offended that you've completely undone his entire life time of practice and study in one sentence. Radiohead was Thom's second signed band. He's been at this for a long time, and it hasn't always been perfect. No artist worth listening to can say that they've released perfect music front to back. Thom is no exception. He put a tremendous amount of effort into this song, and practicing it. Things that look effortless are beautiful because we as the consumer ought to know that they are anything but effortless.
@kolejnytrup4 ай бұрын
I agree with both of you. Music seems to flow through this artist and I think it is natural and automatic to him now (I play drums, this is possible to achieve) but it is exactly because years of practice of singing and playing and hard work put into every performance, paired with talent. We can see the fruit of it and it tastes delicious.

Radiohead are one (probably the only) band who change their tuning quite radically between songs. With the incomparable Jonny Greenwood inventing some tunings as they go along. - most tunings put the guitar into a particular key. Some of Jonny’s split guitar so that the three lower strings are in one key and the higher 3 are completely different one, for a couple of tracks, he pairs strings into fifths but three different keys. So Eb for the top two, G# for the middle and Fm# for the last two. It’s weird as hell but he makes it work. However, as Wd O’Brien said “Thom writes the songs and talks out what he wants to do with them, Jonny works with him on arrangement, then I piss them off for an hour by changing riffs around, then Colin and Phil get their say, but I think only Thom could put in places for cutting to just the bass guitar for a riff in its own right, and he just hands over to Colin and goes ‘there you go mate, what can you do with that’ So there is an element of collaboration. But basically, me, phil and Colin are sitting down with two Geniuses and throwing our pennies into the blender, not all of our ideas get used but a surprising amount are in there somewhere”
