Hey it is my gpu I sent in nwr thanks for repairing and not giving up on it. Short story on the card I got it used on ebay as untested. I try to repair with the newbie stupid method of reflowing with heat gun. Of course it didn't work so I sent it in to northridgefix for repair. They sent it back to me as a no fix so yeah they didn't even do anything to the card because I found some rusted components. I wasted 100 bucks and I try to fix that component and used Kester flux that why there a mess on the card. To sum it up I got the cards as a broken card did some stupid stuff and finally after 2 repair places it alive and well. I use the card when I not using stable diffusion. It still working to this day.

You need more context to understand the issue. AMD 5700 launch was not a disaster, but a failure. Majority of issues were on the software side. But, adding to the injury, some "partners", like XFX, delivered a HORRIBLE card design. XFX were by far the biggest offender. The person who sent it to you should've returned or RMA'd this atrocity. The XFX THICC I and II were really bad, with low build quality, overheating and lots of other issues. After that, they released the 3rd revision. It had 3 fans and performed WAY BETTER than the other models. I know this, because when I made a GPU upgrade the THICC III was priced great and had good reviews and was my GPU for the next 5 years. But when researching the topic I read a lot of sht about the previous revisions

What I am always surprised by is how the heating needed to remove and replace the GPU doesn't desolder anything within the GPU or external elements like those smd chips on the top of the GPU.
@onlythrupixels173
@onlythrupixels173 Ай бұрын
It does, but the components don’t just fly away as soon as they’re desoldered. Just be careful not to hit other things and it’s fine, it’ll just harden when it cools down back to how it was.
@avi8r66
@avi8r66 Ай бұрын
@@onlythrupixels173 Would an IR heater above the GPU be preferable for this kind of work? Something that lacks the wind of a hotair gun?
@miguelfontenele221
@miguelfontenele221 Ай бұрын
@@avi8r66 They don't fly away because of something called "suface tension". Everytime you solder a component, if the solder flows nicely you see the component kinda moves by itself to it's place, that's what surface tension does and if you go ahead and "poke" that same component to the side while the solder is still melted you see it returns back to it's place. That's why they don't fly away, because surface tension holds them into place. Now obviously, that force is not strong enough to hold them into place against everything, so if your hot air has too much air flow it's going to blow components off the board when the solder melts.

Hats off to you! I've done similar board level repairs on my own equipment and it's such a hassle. You've got a real gift to be able to be this diagnostic with these systems. Luckily when my R9 290X started giving me some really peculiar instability issues in 2021, simply cleaning and re-timming (repasting) the chip and regreasing the fan bearings dropped temps by 22C. The card will now likely live on for years to come. Assuming PCIE maintains legacy hardware beyond PCIE6.

Which is why reflow is a no no compared to reballing . Although there are success stories they are mostly used on less operated , 2nd systems. Example, my cheap one that had obvious vram issues but was unworthy of any repair is on a 2nd system for 2 years now after 4 conservative and 1 aggressive (the last one) bakes.

You know, the stuff that only needs service once every 25-50 years, doesn't need updates, can't be hacked, and never needs a subscription. While you're correct that I would not have known what flux to use on a GPU PCB, you may not know that those of us with real electronics experience would have looked up what to use before using anything, or (as I would have done), sent my GPU to a professional like yourself. I would hope that if you ever had say, a Marantz 2385 in need of repair, you would not try to fix it yourself, but would instead send it to a professional in such matters, like me. Loved the editing on this video. That repair looked painful though, you're a tough person to endure re-baling the core TWICE!

I recognise that face! Richard a brit living on one of the Spanish islands. 'fixed' my rx 5500, took 3 months, charged €60 + shipping. Card came back, booted once then never ran again. Give your business to Tony!!

Same here! I mean I know what soldering is, but god damn... all these fluids, the seemingly random electric measurements, soldering a bunch of cables to the card to check certain values... 😵‍💫

Dude, I was a QE for a while at one of the largest electronics contract manufacturer. I got there from the job of hand solder, wire add and rework trainer. I am also a retired EE. You rock. That was an incredible amount of skilled work WITH major diagnostic skills to boot. I thought yours was a lost skill set. I am glad I was wrong.

I think it is XFX that manufactured this card and not AMD. Only the Chip comes from AMD as far as I know. So it is like: "Here is the proof that AMD hates you", when having problems with an Asus Mainboard.

Great content. I did BGA reballing for 11 years and totally quit that aspect for the last 7 years, doing electronic repairs and moved into automotive. Your videos inspire me to get back into it, I still have my rework king equipment I spent like £4k on.

I work fleet maintenance, there's just some vehicles that don't want to leave the shop. You finish one repair, everything is working fine so you go to put it on the ready line and.... something stopped working that didn't have any issue before.

I feel for you, we all do stupid shit and keep failing to notice. My worst mistake; an (at the time), £1.5 Million industrial computer in a HUGE control panel; backstory, I had built 8 of these, one after the other, but we only had TWO of the step down transformers in stock, so after each one went through the testing station for 2 weeks of tests, the transformer was dropped out for use in the next build - until the delayed order of transformers finally turned up; then I quickly wired in all the new transformers and they went back to the testing bay for final tests before shipping. One panel had an issue, everything was working correctly, but it would randomly trip out; the test tech and I spent days going over everything, but couldnt see any issues with the build or components; then one day he called me over and asked me to look VERY carefully at the transformer. This transformer took 2 phases from an industrial 3 phase supply (440volts) and dropped it to 110v (+/-55volts) for the control panel and industrial computer. It was the wrong way around. The guy who had fitted it had it reversed, and because the markings were very small, and quite difficult to read, neither of us had noticed; this panel had been running at around 1,600 volts for weeks.

The quality of work is insane. I've tried my hand at soldering for near twenty years. My hands shake too much for such fine work, dealing with wires around 28 gauge it's almost impossible for me to get a clean solder without burning something I shouldn't lol.

Some (or most?) no clean flux are designed to inactivate after first reflow and cooling. They wont properly reflow again until you remove the layer of inactivated flux. They're meant for processes with no cleaning step (either technically impossible to clean or to skip cleaning for dubious profit.) Kester has other formulas that allow rework, but the residue isnt as inert, which the engineer designing the process should be considering. As a technician or hobbyist, just use regular flux and clean it off. You'll save yourself a lot of headache.
