EDITED: Thanks to a few select folks who have messaged me informing me about the possible badly stitched / stretched imagery on google Earth which might explain the hiccups in Hauknes. There's a strong chance this IS still Platinum despite it looking like I actually went further south at the final big deviation. I think when we're trying to be this precise, we are at the mercy of the GPS signal and the imagery on google earth which isn't good. Perhaps this means that the platinum and gold zones need less attention, and instead we need to focus on the line rating score that I intend to fully reveal to you all soon (probably on the Scotland vid) OLD COMMENT: UPDATE: Having read a few of your comments, it does look like some of the readings in that last section in Hauknes, are wrong. You can clearly see that my "walked" line goes through houses when obviously I walked around them. The house to the east I walked to the north of, and the house to the west, the one with the big deviation, I walked to the south of. This means that in actual fact, I probably deviated more than 25 metres at this point. It was probably more like 30m. I was also closer to the goal on the football pitch. These wrong readings must be poor accuracy from the GPS system, which can be especially bad when running past houses and the like. The fact that some of these errors are north and some of them are south, means that it cannot be incorrect imagery overlay. There isn't much I can do about this other than invest in a better GPS system. Damn. I knew it was too good to be true. I shall keep this video up because the gist of it is true, but I can no longer safely declare that this was a Platinum run. Can we do so for any straight line? especially if it was recorded with a similar base level GPS system? I will explain these points in a future video.
@jonhiebert83213 жыл бұрын
just do the whole equator.
@jpsimas23 жыл бұрын
There'll always be some uncertainty on the readings, that's why I think you should use the mean squared difference of the expected line and the walked line instead of the maximum deviation as a score, because in this way the uncertainties of each point average out and the uncertainty of the final score is a lot smaller

Regarding the “goodness” of fit to a straight line, the statistical calculation you’re describing is called Sum of the Squared Errors (SSE). It is the most meaningful way to describe how well a path fits a line. SSE can be used it conjunction with other statistics to effect other meaningful descriptors, like R-squared, which gives a normalized number. R-Squared of 1 would be perfect correlation to the line.
@MarceloTutoriais1003 жыл бұрын
This R-squared number is also known as Pearson's correlation coefficient?
@stefanSS14803 жыл бұрын
Understood nothing, but very interesting
@ScottFree4all3 жыл бұрын
@@MarceloTutoriais100 as the name implies, R-squared is the square of Pearson’s R. These are used more for modeling however. The SSE by itself is, I think, a good tool for what Tom is after. Think of SSE as adding up all the small deviations along the path to the true line, whether to the left or the right of the true line. And, because each deviation amount is squared, one is punished more for a single large variation than a few very small ones.
@benjaminbaer18693 жыл бұрын
Hi @Scott George, interesting post, but I'm not sure that this is a statistical problem. I think the goal here is just to get a mathematical measure of the distance between the two lines. There's lots of distances that could be used, but IMO L2 (square root of sums of squared deviations) is less fair than just L1 (sum of absolute deviations). In both cases, I agree that normalizing by the distance of the lines is helpful like Tom says (i.e. dividing by length of the line). I think both are better than L\infty (i.e. maximum deviation). I'm interested in your thoughts.

Well done! when I saw your last video, I did think that given it is a linear deviation (12m offset), it doesn't really impact on the 'straightness' of your line. AKA the path you were following is arbitrary and just a guide, the challenge is to cross in a straight line, not to adhere to some specific straight line. There are analytical methods which can determine your mean path (line of best fit) and the maximum deviation from that mean path which would more accurately describe the 'straightness' of your path!

That was damn interesting. GPS data being interpreted on different map projections. Seems like a failing of the Garmin Basecamp software, no?

You should do California, that would be long but amazing! You'd see so many different terrains and geographies.
@tnikoli403 жыл бұрын
Think bushfires are too big of a hazard. Plus not sure how protective people are about someone going over their fields or gardens, we dont want him to get shot. Plus you have desserts so cali may not be the ideal candidate
@superdestrier91603 жыл бұрын
@@tnikoli40 SoCal is a desert, but he should be fine in the more northern(not Bay Area or Central Valley) parts of NorCal. Sparsely populated and beautiful. Also, if he goes now he can avoid the coming year round bushfires.

I'd love to see a area of deviation. so all the area between the straight and the squiggly line, see how it compares to various other things, like is it less area than Liechtenstein, or twice a football pitch.
@DonegalOverlanding3 жыл бұрын
Amazing! Im actually excited to watch, and to be honest Ive not finished it yet as i wanted to ask about the house near the end at 8:54 , the "walked line" is clearly going through the house which you didnt do, so if you adjusted that line to actually be accurate to where you were walking in reality, would that put you beyond the 25m? Or did you walk the other side of the house actually nearer to the "walked line"?
@nixxonnor3 жыл бұрын
The new explanation totally makes sense to me. Congratulations :D (And you could of course also adust the starting point and the goal point to tweak the deviation in the desired direction)
