"The Maple Leaf Forever" is a Canadian song written by Alexander Muir (1830--1906) in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. He wrote the work after serving with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto in the Battle of Ridgeway against the Fenians in 1866.

Neale Wagstaff I like the later versions as the first one only represents Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, not the prairies and Newfoundland etc. The later variants represents ALL Canadians be it Irishmen, Englishmen, Scotsmen, Frenchmen, or simply people native to this land born here from within or from the start. It’s actually very inclusive it just shows representation for the primary founders of Canada, naturally.

I'm a French-Canadian, I live in Quebec and I long for the rebirth of the canadien identity as much as English-Canadiens loyalist are... Canada is going the wrong way by americanising its identity. Let's put Canada back on track and adopting this song as our anthem would be an amazing start! God save the Queen and God bless Canada!

The fact the 1st stanza of this song begins by celebrating the conquest of French ruled Canada by the British in the French & Indian War doesn't bother you? It might be argued that that began a process of moving those French Canadians from an autocratic rule a "liberal democracy" but that was years down the way.

Although the Americans see themselves as the saviours of Europe, two more nations fought on the beaches that day, and 3 years before that. In days of yore, from Britain's shore, Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came And planted firm Britannia's flag On Canada's fair domain. Here may it wave, our boast, our pride And, joined in love together, The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine (Also sung: The lily, thistle, shamrock, rose) The Maple Leaf forever! Chorus The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear, The Maple Leaf forever! God save our Queen and Heaven bless The Maple Leaf forever! At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane, Our brave fathers, side by side, For freedom, homes and loved ones dear, Firmly stood and nobly died; And those dear rights which they maintained, We swear to yield them never! Our watchword evermore shall be "The Maple Leaf forever!" Chorus Our fair Dominion now extends From Cape Race to Nootka Sound; May peace forever be our lot, And plenteous store abound: And may those ties of love be ours Which discord cannot sever, And flourish green o'er freedom's home The Maple Leaf forever! Chorus On merry England's far famed land May kind heaven sweetly smile, God bless old Scotland evermore and Ireland's Em'rald Isle! And swell the song both loud and long Till rocks and forest quiver! God save our Queen and Heaven bless The Maple Leaf forever!

@@Tommy-5684 I wonder if the French translations contain this much Anglofication of Canadian history or if the French translators found a way to balance it out with the addition of French history? I won't go looking for it, either. I hate the way that Canadians translate each others' languages... Usually it deals with a shit ton of rewriting out of spite for the other. Look at the French O Canada lyrics and compare that to the English, for example.

Anyways, yeah O Canada was a song made by French rebels, it was Quebec’s “national anthem” played on St. jean-Baptise day for them. Disgusting how it became our anthem. And the maple leaf design as we know it isn’t the best either, literally making a college flag our national flag is a bad choice lol

Nobody thinks twice about Quebec, and nobody cares about your histrionics anymore. “O Canada” sucks because it’s a slow, boring, church hymn with lyrics that are repetitive and unimaginative in English. The “Maple Leaf Forever” is a song you can blast out the top of a Kangaroo carrier as you smash your way through the Scheldt, incinerating Germans as you go.

It's bittersweet listening to this song knowing that the Liberals have completely killed our identity as a nation in less than 50 years...most Canadians have never even heard this song or know that "God Save the Queen" is our Royal Anthem. Very good version to pick by the way!

@HerculesMays
@HerculesMays 6 жыл бұрын
It's not so easily explained but I'd consider somebody a Canadian if they are English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh or French. I think some of the elements that make up our founding Canadian Identity would include the rugged terrain and the romanticized portrayal of our exploration and taming of this land. It's obviously much more complex than this but I definitely would have a hard time ever calling an Indian, Italian or Japanese person a "Canadian"
@juliuscaesar5397
@juliuscaesar5397 6 жыл бұрын
Why? You don't believe that these values could fit with people who are Japanese, Indian, or Italian?
@HerculesMays
@HerculesMays 6 жыл бұрын
No, I do think they could showcase such values but I think a nation should be united in culture and people. I'd expect to find Anglo-Saxon people in England and Japanese people in Japan. I find it odd that in western countries like Canada, we can't have that same connection where being "Canadian" is both cultural but also ethnically distinct as well

@@m_g6659 As an American, I remember watching a Chicago Blackhawks/ Toronto Maple Leafs game played in old Maple Leafs Garden in I think 1966. When anthems were sung, I was expecting to hear "O Canada" which I had heard recently when Blackhawks were playing in Montreal. Instead, I heard "God Save the Queen," with the camera focused, not on the flag, but on a portrait of Her Majesty in all her glory looking like she was ready to slay the world in defense of her people. She may have enen had a sword. I was impressed! Trivia fact: I think Leafs won the game, and Canadiens won the other game I mentioned.

@@stephenkammerling9479 The Maple Leafs actually won their last Championship in 1966. They've never won a game since. God Save the Queen is still played on Remembrance Day, at least it is where I live in the Province of Ontario.

@@karenwesley84 Your comment about Remembrance Day was interesting. Actually, I think Leafs last won Stanley Cup in 1967. The Chicago Blackhawks were favored to win Cup that year because they had the best regular season record, winning the Prince of Wales Trophy, but Maple Leafs beat them in playoffs. I think Leafs then won the Cup by beating Montreal Canadiens. That was back in the original six days shortly before expansion. I hope the Leafs don't go a 108 years without a title like the Chicago Cubs did!

@Sana_a04

tbh even as a Canadian I don't know why 1953 was chosen for the date. Honestly, it should be 1951 as that's when Canada stopped being referred to as a Dominion. The only major event for Canada in 1953 really was Elizabeth II being crowned, but I don't see how that would have anything to do with it.
