It's such an insane way to film a movie, but I guess it makes it easier to do each scene once in English, and immediately after in German. As opposed to dubbing. When Herzog filmed Aguirre, he had a cast that all spoke different languages, so they all spoke their native tongue, and it got dubbed over into different languages for different countries.

But do these little differences add up to a bigger difference overall? I remember reading somewhere that Herzog preferred the German version slightly.

One might argue that the actors being able to perform in their native language might have brought a more authentic performance out of them (I don't mind the english ones at all though). I don't get the feeling that the two versions differ in quality all that much.

It just sucks they couldn't act EXACTLY the same way the second time around in English because you can see the differences in body language and even how its shot is different because you get certain angle changes that's not in the original German. An interesting thing to do a movie in two languages but mastering the same level of acting and scene mimicking can be tricky that can either make or break a translation.

I’ve seen both versions. I believe the German version is superior because certain particularly striking scenes are shorter in the English version.
