Huge fan of deepfocus, so a little disappointed in her opinion on this great film, The Northmen. My opinion on Nasferatu is similar, as many of her criticisms are. It's great fun, visually stimulating, but maybe misses by a centimeter on delivering resonance, and a little too long. Worth seeing. I may see again in theatres because I had a fairly raucous, distracting group near me. It's not as good as The Northman regardless :)

Yeah it was bad ass, i dont get the cult following for The Lighthouse over it. Lighthouse was good, but Northmen has much more rewatch factor to it In fact, i'd say The Northman is his most rewatchable film. The rest are hard to stomach multiple times, though i feel like i can add Nosferatu to my yearly October playlist despite it being a christmas release and there is a scene with a xmas tree-it's an october mood.

I totally agree with you about the capacity of silent films to draw us totally into the story being told on screen. Without the distraction of sound effects or spoken dialogue, we can only rely upon what we can see with our eyes to understand what is going on. There is an almost hypnotic effect in watching a silent film , knowing that if we relax our gaze just a second, we may miss the whole point of the film.

After reading Dracula twice, I found that this particular Nosferatu fit the description given to Dracula in the novel. The wolves, the ambiance, Hutter being held prisoner in the castle, and Hutter being fed off of draw from (and cut through) a great deal of the text found in 400 pages. The fact that this Nosferatu has a mustache the way the novel describes him was fresh to my expectations. I say, two 👍 👍 and 10/10. But that's a first impression. As a seasoned horror film fan, I will say this is the first time in 16 years that I've "jumped" in fear. This movie has the goods. Well done, Herr Eggers!

In response to the first part of your comment, why are you acting like you're revealing some revelation? Of course it's the plot of Dracula, have you seen the OG Nosferatu? It's the story of Dracula my friend.

@user61920 I own two copies of 1922's Nosferatu in case one becomes defective. So, yes. I have seen it. I'm considering anyone who never saw other iterations of Dracula or anyone who doesn't know the story. I've never read _Dune_ for example. Therefore, I'm unaware of subtle details loved by the readers. If I saw the recent movies made of Dune, those are my only sources of reference. Overall, I prefer Dune from 1984.

It's interesting how horror can be so subjective to the viewer. I did not find Nosferatu scary at any point, nor did it leave me with many good impressions (although I did like the cinematography during the scenes with Nosferatu's shadow). Herzog's version continues to be my personal favorite.

@@user61920 If everyone knew that there wouldn’t be so many people asking why he looks the way he does in this movie. Most people are used to the Bella Lugosi version of what Dracula is supposed to look like not the actual novel description. So he had a perfectly valid reason to point that out.

An honorable mention to "The Transfiguration" from 2016, which is not a Vampire movie, but Milo thinks rightly about a vampire at least and thinks rightly about the movies that true vampire fans love. An excellent watch if you wish to scare your loved one with a romantic vampire movie that isn't. I disagree with Milo on one of his favorite vampire movies, but it least I understand him. Sophie is a "Twilight" fan in the wrong movie, but she is lovable nonetheless. VAMPIRES can be loveable, even if evil. Evil is evil and should be portrayed as such; however, this creature has turned into a romance or lust type story, so why? Psalms 92:1-7 “It is agreed to cast off YAHWEH, to call out the name ALLAH. Conspicuously he is devout at coming at the dusk, fidelity at night. All ten (fingers) go to the strings to play upon the lyre. Upon springing forth shall YAHWEH be glad at the deeds done? Screaming at the works of your hands! How great shall be the works of YAHWEH, the device's blade is forced in deep. Brutish man to know not, to know not, fool! Discern that with me is God. The wicked sprout up like a herb, all make sorrow as they flourish, only that they be destroyed for forevermore.” YAHWEH can judge ALLAH. Psalms 91:1-2 “He who dwells in secret with ALLAH abides the night in darkness. The Almighty utters, “YAHWEH is a refuge, a strong fortress, a God to trust.”” ALLAH is the Ba'alZebub who desired LUCIFER to make gods. 'She' goes into an Abyss. Psalms 91:7-10 “A thousand fall at your side, a multitude at the right-hand approach, surely you look with the eye to see the recompense of the wicked. He will set it in the proper place, YAHWEH is a refuge, ALLAH in the temple, no evil shall befall, no stroke shall enter the body.” LUCIFER excited that one-third of all angels die before her, by His hand, but never did the pollution touch Him. The implication is 'Nosferatu' is the god of Islam. Yet as the ignorant learned they realize that 'she' still desires Yahweh and so they slaughter many, but what they do not do now is focus on Israel until November 29, 1947, when modern, secular Israel was made. The Muslim desires to be a god. He comes from afar having her within, for she desires all of her own to be slain, so that just once she can reach out unto Him. Job 4:18 “For he put forth no trust, behold even in his own servants, the angels, for he chargeth them as all are in error.” Job 25:2-6a “Dominion dreadful belongs unto him, who establishes peace in His Height. For this existence is a number of bands who light his time to arise. How can a man be justified as god by a word? How clean is he who births the woman? Behold, for unto the last the moon (“lesser light ruling over darkness”) cleared away and not bright (New Moon) and the stars are not pure, and perceives moreover lesser of man than a maggot." Job 27:11-13 “I will throw out the hand of this god; who when with the Almighty, shall not be concealed. Behold, of all you have seen, how this act maketh empty. This is the portion of the wicked man, a Word of God, and the inheritance of the tyrant received of the Almighty.” Job28:20-24 “Whence wisdom? And knowledge, unto who does it come? And where is the place of understanding? And it is concealed from the eyes of all of the living. Concealed from the birds of the heavens (fallen angels). Abaddon (The Destroyer or Apollyon) bringing death, saith, “we have ears to hear the report.” Elohim (God) discerns their ways; He knows where they stand. Look to the end of the Earth. See all under the heavens. He will impart the weight of the winds; meted waters by measures. Making a limit to rain, and from a far distance for the voice of Thunder. At that time see and relate, He established, and moreover stretched it out. To man utter, “Behold in fear, your lord,” for the wisdom will depart, evil has understanding.” Job 34:12-13 “Surely a god wicked, and Mighty, will pervert justice. Who is appointed authority over the Earth? Who has laid out the whole of the world?” Expect the Anti-Christ to come from the Democratic party of America, for it was Woodrow Wilson who drew all the lines of all the nation with “Determinism” in 1919 after all the world was tread down and crushed in the Apocalypse of World War One. But, there is spiritual implication, as well. Job 34:14-18 “If 'he' were determined to gather unto 'himself' that Spirit, and breathe, all flesh will perish together, and man would return to the dust. And if you have understanding hear this: “Listen, unto the sound of My words: Shall the hater of Justice rule, by condemning the Righteous One?” Utter unto the king, “Worthless One (Beli’Yah’al - meaning “birthing Yah’s opposition”), your nobles are wicked.”” Job 34:19-20 “Who takes no partiality to princes? And no regard for the rich above the poor? They all must work with their hands. For in one moment death by division. The people will be shaken and pass away. Valiant and turned aside without hand.” Job 34:21-23 “The eye is upon the ways of the man, 'She' seeth all of the steps. There is nothing, and neither darkness, or shadow where the workers of iniquity may hide. Setting 'the man' afar, that he should go to the place of God’s judgment.” Job 34:29-30 “Keep quiet, who?, the condemner? And hide your face. Who can behold her? This angel? And regard the nation, and the man.” Isaiah 34:8 “Yahweh, it is the day of Vengeance, year of the recompense, for dispute taken out of (word for those words is “rib” - a woman in dispute with Yahweh can only be Lucifer, the most beautiful of the flock) Zion.” Isaiah 34:9-10 “Streams torrent, and overturning unto pitch, for loosed from the dust (remember the first bodies of Muslims are all ash after Isaiah 14:26-31) brimstone of the Earth (demons -> fallen angels again) shall fall out as burning pitch, never to be quenched, night and day smoke shall go up from generation unto generation. For the desolate are nought to pass enduring for all eternity.” Ecclesiastes 7:27-28 ""To see to discovery, this," saith the Preacher, "you add one unto another, until you find the explanation: Who am I to seek? They seek to attain one man, out of the thousands, to attain the woman of the whole of man."" Revelation 9:20 "The remaining of mankind, who is not killed by these plagues, repented not of the works of their hands, in order that they might worship the demon, his image of gold, silver, brass, and petrified wood (the life inside the glorified shell), for I demonstrate power that he neither see, nor hear, nor walk." Isaiah 46:5-6 “Who is my likeness and equal? And be like and represent and be as unto. Lavish the gold out of the bag of heavy weight, and silver to the balance (holding up the head). The hire of making refine and it’s made, a word of god, prostrate, yea worship.” Isaiah 40:18-21 “To whom will you liken a Word of god? Who is the likeness of compared unto? Him? The idol engraved and poured out. Smelt is beat out of Gold, the smelt are the chains on the silver. The impoverished are an offering, select of the tree (of a Life) never rotting to seek skillful craftsmen. Be firm of the image never tottering. Do ye really not know? Have ye never heard? This was declared from the beginning, no understanding is the foundation of the Earth.” Isaiah 66:24 “And they shall go forth, and see corpses of men who transgress, the worm, dieth. Their fire inextinguishable, abhorrence unto the whole of mankind.” Having finally been thrown out of humanity, for all of humanity is dead. They gain their second bodies only for all to be made limbless as Lucifer, for she was jealous upon being cut off from Yahweh of 'the woman.' Lucifer had kept 'nosferatu' in ignorance, "no understanding is the foundation of the Earth." Yahweh looks upon 'Her.' Psalms 68:31 “The Prince (male human) comes out of Egypt, run through she (Lucifer) stretches out her hands unto Elohim (Jesus).” Isaiah 17:7 “In that day, man shall gaze on his Maker (Barack Hussein Obama at Yahweh), and eye shall look upon ‘Sacred of Israel’ (Yahweh beholds His Lucifer).”

I actually thought the dialogue was awesome, especially Nosferatu’s. Skarsgård did such a good job with that deep, eerie voice. And the fact that they made their own interpretation of ancient Dacian with help from a Romanian novelist is so fucking cool. It adds this creepy, otherworldly layer that really pulls you into the story. One of my favorite scenes was the Gypsy village dance. I seriously hope that becomes a TikTok trend because I can’t get enough of that slap dancing. It kind of reminded me of SpongeBob’s slap dancing. After watching, I went down this whole rabbit hole looking up Romanian and German slap dances, and now I’m obsessed. The whole movie just felt so beautiful and eerie. Every single shot had this haunting, dreamlike quality, like it was pulling me deeper into some strange, old world. I honestly loved it.

The appeal of Eggers, for me, is his genuine interest in History. His ability to capture the weirdness of the past while (mostly) preserving the humanity and relatability of his characters is unmatched. The Northman was a mixed bag on that front. I've been nervously anticipating Nosferatu for a while now. Glad to hear that it is not a train wreck, but I'd love to see him (Eggers) return to smaller stories. ...anyway, thanks for all your reviews this year.

I agree with the postives, but I don't agree with the negatives. I think the movie's updates do quite a bit to enhance the experience by making the villain more grotesque in a way that might evoke the same kind of revulsion people had for Max Schreck, and the cinematography, production design and acting style make everything feel more operatic, which is fitting because the full title of the original film was Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror. The only real criticism I had--which was a small one--is that I feel like the movie tells when showing would have been enough. That's one of my favorite aspects of the previous versions of Nosferatu because they allow the visuals to do most of the storytelling. Then again, I also noticed that most of the other people in the audience seemed really confused during certain scenes because they weren't familiar with either of the German versions, so maybe he was tossing them a bone. Regardless, it's a minor gripe, and I'm happy to say that this movie was definitely worth the wait from when I first heard about it. I'll always be happy whenever I'm lucky enough to see something I'm excited for that didn't let me down.

Agreed his first 2 films are the best so far. The problem I have with this remake is that it is yet another film telling the same story. The Northman was a retelling too of course but wrapped in a Viking aesthetic. RE is quite possibly on as high a level as Kubrick when it comes to detail and authenticity. I think the problem is the mainstream film industry wants to exploit it at the expense of unhinged storytelling. I’ve no doubt Eggers was in his element making this film but it is essentially a cover version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. A story everyone knows. That was my main issue with it. Some film makers don’t factor film history in with their film projects. Which is a sign of someone being in their own bubble. He would’ve been better off finding a far lesser known story or folk tale to sink his teeth into. (Pun intended). It wasn’t a bad movie but wasn’t an essential watch movie like The VVitch was.

What I love about 1922’s Nosferatu is that it feels like a genuine artifact from an era where one could truly believe in the existence of such fantastical creatures like vampires. Eggers’ first two movies are among the few examples IMO that capture that feeling, which made him seem like such a prime candidate for adapting the Nosferatu story for contemporary audiences. For all its positives this one didn’t end up with that feel for me. I liken it more to Del Toro’s “Crimson Peak”, a movie I do enjoy but doesn’t enchant me in the same way as the “The VVitch” does. Will still give this another go in theaters before cementing my opinion.

This was my first Eggers film - and my first time watching a Nosferatu film - so I wasn't coming in with a mind to compare and contrast. Rather, I watched Nosferatu on its own merits and was thrilled by it. As you pointed out, Lily-Rose Depp brought the emotion the film needed, the performances were strong as a whole and the camera work was stunning, but I'd also add that Bill Skarsgård was the lynchpin of the film, really driving home the monstrous, demonic nature of the vampire. Nosferatu being so menacing also buttresses the tried and true clash between long-held tradition and crusading enlightenment. I do agree that the script sort of lets down the characters and movie itself, through how it doesn't provide the emotional depth that would give the characters real life. As it is, I'd still recommend it and I'm more excited to watch Eggers' other films. Insightful review as always. The comparison to silent films was a point that provided food for thought and strengthened your argument.

Eggers' strength, and that goes for all his movies, The VVitch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, is the historical accuracy that he brings to the visual representation of the setting, the set pieces and the costumes, the historical accuracy that he brings to his characters' mindsets, perceptions of and views on the world surrounding them, and the historical accuracy that he brings to the mythological symbolism and lore, which he grounds both his characters' psychological conflicts and his stories' supernatural horror elements in.

The tale of Amleth isn't really rooted in horror like the basis for his first two films (The VVitch and The Lighthouse) so I don't think it's fair to go into the film with the same expectations or mindset. Everything was on point in that movie, and the performances were phenomenal. It is one of (if not the most) historically accurate Viking film that has ever been put to screen. It's just not a horror movie.

I very much enjoy your takes on this and various other films. I share your previously expressed admiration for Roger Ebert, whose writing for me is a paradigm not only of excellent English prose but also of superbly crafted movie reviewing. You deserve to have the wide audience he had. I strongly agree with your assessment that Robert Eggers is a first-rate director who still needs a script with a high caliber of writing to match his prowess. Thank you for your insightful contributions. Though I am not a cinephile, I have learned a great deal from them. 🙂

What I appreciated most was the defying of ingrained expectations. Anyone old enough to have seen Gary Oldman play The Count onscreen is certainly experienced enough to have seen any number of Dracula adaptations (horror, dramatic, even comedic) and here The Count does not morph into some svelte, dapper man-about-town who charms the pants off everyone he encounters, seducing every luscious young thing, fangs sinking jugulars. No, instead we’re treated to exactly what Stoker envisioned: an undead abomination who never appears anything less than ancient, albeit a powerful entity. When he is destroyed, there’s no swell of music and a burst of flames. He just…dies, like a shrunken head pulled from within. So much better than Eggers’ previous effort. 133 minutes, but if it were longer you wouldn’t complain. All are fine in their roles, but Simon McBurney kills it in a role unlike I’ve seen him play. Having said all that, despite being more entertaining than the god-awful Northman…Nosferatu is a sumptuous-looking snoozefest. And did we really need yet another vampire film? What’s Eggers’ next project…The Nutcracker or King Arthur?

Overall, liked the movie…but there were patches that seemed misplaced….wanted your take on it….i agree w your assessment….i do not know much about Eggers’ movies….but was intrigued how he improved on the original. Underlying themes of death, lust, desperation, plague, were well done. Holt character English male stoicism…was good…his vulnerability and weaknesses were very well done…but I agree the marriage aspect needed more work. The “Igor-like” character could have used more air time…he was a good actor. Castle scenes I liked a lot, but could have trimmed out the dead space. Defoe is good in any role!

The VVitch is a masterpiece. The Lighthouse is a great nightmare. The Northman is just Viking Hamlet, which I enjoyed, but I agree that it was a strange side step, if not a step back. Nosferatu is such a perfect remake, it feels unnecessary, but it was a great end to my day. Eggers is a force, and I just want to see him go fully original and unleash the evil he teases. But even if The VVitch is as close as he gets, it remains brilliant, and the closest I've felt to the devil through a film. Excellent review, as always. Happy Yule.

@thomassisemore3230 Yup. Which is cool that he reclaimed it, in a way, but, to my point, he seems to be getting further away from originality with each film. His first two films were derived from historical accounts, and exaggeration of the accounts, to the point of being very original. The Northman was completely recognizable because of its many variations and interpretations. And now, Nosferatu is a remake. And although I think my favorite version visually, it doesn't have my hopes peaked for future work. Maybe he's just honing his craft for something fantastic, though. And I hope that's the case.

I respect the opinion, but for me, it was a perfect Dracula adaptation. I felt the strong atmospheric pull of the movie, kind of putting Rose Depp's character as a perfect catalyst for the audience more so than the Nicolas Hault character. As we all know the classic monster, she did an excellent job of conveying the horror in a new direction.

Nicholas Hoult was the standout for me. The eyes, the facial expressions, the body language - his acting was compelling. The wonder of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's acting is in its understatement. My main issue - apart from the heaviness of the dialogue and length of certain scenes - was Lily-Rose Depp. The more virtuosic elements of the role - the physical contortions, for example, were handled brilliantly. But in the opening scenes in particular, I felt a disconnect between the heightened emotions her character was experiencing, and a generic, even detached quality to her acting. Maybe this was a directorial choice, but it made me feel like I was watching a film of a film, and that took me out of the fantasy.

I find 'Nosferatu' (2024) as visually stunning, the use of shadow and flame is beautiful. I am a big fan of the original black & white silent film , the 'Nosferatu' (1979) film directer by the genius Werner Herzog. Eggers film is mesmerising in the attention to detail, the dialogue is a little tiring but overall a great B+, 7 out of 10 film. I do love the traditional take of Nosferatu as character in similar look to a dead Vlad the Impaler, with traditional dress and moustache ( Dracula novel, the Count bears a decent mustache too). Overall I would recommend this film. Will love to watch it at home.

There was nothing in the character that suggested either of those, so - I ask again - why does he have a moustache?

I had the same response to Nosferatu that I had to The Northman. Very well made. Very well researched. Emotional flatline. I felt nothing leaving the theater after either film. I respect things about both but I'll probably never revisit either of them. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters or events. If I watch Bram Stoker's Dracula, even with its campiness and silly performances from Keanu Reeves and Wynona Ryder, I still get an emotional charge and it has an intensity that gets my blood going. And I would rather watch the original Conan the Barbarian than The Northman. Same story essentially. But Conan hits me on an emotional level and has energy. Eggers is a good filmmaker but he's yet to connect with me. I'll keep rooting for him because he has vision. The VVitch is still his best in my opinion. Great film Great payoff. I was invested.

The acting was very good...the story was not great. I felt like there was very little development of the Count's character and backstory...actually none. Did she actually awaken the Count....if so how, and why was he asleep. How did Knock develop a relationship with the Count, and get into the occult, and get a book on vampires? At their first meeting Ellen confronts the Count and defies him, but at the end, she just accepts everything and acts like she's in love. Dafoe's character really adds very little to the story line in the end.

Capturing the historical look and historical zeitgeist of the eras his movies are set in, that's something Robert Eggers capture, merges and balances beautifully with the mindset of his individual (main) characters, the psychology and suspense of group dynamics, and the mythological and symbolical elements of horror. If you want historical accuracy and psychological consistency in your mythological horror movies, and if you also prefer the subtly uncanny and the implicitly abysmal over the excessive gore and the blunt jumpscares, then Eggers is your man.

Saw it earlier today in a packed theater; was very surprised at that. Anyway, I watched the original for the first time a month, or so, ago. Thought it was very engaging, except the writing is not very good, imo; Murnau directs the fck out of it, tho. Watched the Herzog version a couple days ago--didn't like it. I think this is much better than Herzog's version, but is also much weaker than the original. I really agree with you on the dialogue being filler & the movie feeling too long. In Nosferatu ranking, I'd go ... 1922 2024 1979 In Robert Eggers ranking, I'd go ... The Northman The VVitch The Lighthouse Nosferatu (It'd obvi be better if he named it The Nosferatu lmao) This new movie really slams on the breaks after Thomas Hutter falls out of the window. There is almost zero tension & energy after that. Loved the first half, tho. My main problem with this one is that Eggers & Friends mostly don't improve the narrative in their version, which is the weakest part of the original film. Even tho I don't like Herzog's version, it has the best writing of all three versions. Between the new technology & having the historical hindsight to look at the strengths & weaknesses of the prior versions, I can't believe Eggers & Friends couldn't easily have slam dunked this one, especially with the quality of the other films they've made. I also can't believe neither Herzog nor Eggers included the Wolf Hunt scene from the original, where you see Orlok as a wolf literally terrorizing the country side in the dead of night!!! WTF!?!?!

"The Northman" is a fantastic film portraying the Nordic saga roots of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The reviewer seeing that work as thin calls into question her basic understanding. Per Nosferatu: it's better than "The Lighthouse" or "The VVitch". The reviewer's issues with the script are also odd, the dialogue is period and genre specific and hits the right tone. Watched it 2 days ago and I really liked it. I recommend you guys to sit in the front rows, like on the 4th or 5th row, it's very immersive near the screen. It doesn't go without a critique or two though. It has a little bit of stalling more or less in the middle of it, and I think Nosferatu himself looks like an undead viking warrior, therefore in my humble opinion I think Eggers should've made him more like a proper vampire, a bit like the 1979 Herzog's one, he's too big in my opinion. Overall it is a great movie to watch in a theatre room, don't wait for the stream, go watch it asap guys. One thing I really don't get is the backlash and hate that this movie is getting by other channels and content creators, I think people talk crap just because, that's what I think.
