Growing up in the Great Depression era may have had something to do with this for some actors. Having little to no money may have meant they grew accustomed to not having the man-made hygiene products we rely on so much today. My grandparents were only able to fully bathe once per week as kids. In the meantime, they relied on sponge baths, etc, a practice they carried through adulthood even though by then they made enough money and had a home of their own and could fully bathe daily. Matthew McConaughey is notoriously known in Hollywood for not bathing on a regular basis. Arriving on set, he would rival a trash dumpster for stink. Complaints galore by others have done little good. As for Cary Grant, the English perfume house, Creed, created a fragrance back in the 1930s especially for Cary Grant. It was called, "Green Irish Tweed". I've used it myself (it is fantastic and unique!!). I just wished he used it more often in his life, especially when working with others. Oh, well. Good video. Clark Gable was one to talk, he was known for very bad breath. Mostly attributed to false teeth and smoking. Lot of folks these days don't understand how prevalent smoking indoors was up until the 1980s. Open a door to a bar and you might think it was on fire from all the smoke that came out. I could smell it 😖 . I thought it was the farm 🚜, area we worked in but her smells, unstable behavior was obvious. I think the actor had mental problems.

It should have been noted that it was normal for people to bathe once or twice a week especially until the 1950's when most people didn't have running water, let alone hot water, and they washed their clothes when they got dirty. Hotels didn't have private bathrooms. It was a different time and it wasn't uncommon to meet people with unappealing personal odor which was probably less unappealing to people from their own "tribe." The people who were complaining probably didn't smell so good themselves.

Anyone who’s been on or even near a film set will tell you how unbearably hot it can get. Add makeup, elaborate costumes and wigs to the mix and anyone would reek after 12 hours or more. Hygiene would be a top priority, you would think. Joan Crawford showered constantly and insisted her sets be refrigerated, not so much for comfort or limiting sweating, but to keep her makeup fresh.

Being Bipolar myself, I can attest that the hygiene struggle for Vivien Lee was real. When I felt my very worst, stepping into that shower, putting on those clean clothes, and simply putting toothpaste on that toothbrush was a mental feat. I looked and smelled terrible, which embarrassed me, so I isolated myself. Poor Vivien was famous so she couldn't isolate herself. I wish there had been more awareness and help available back then.

Several of these people had the right idea of avoiding toxic chemicals and eating natural/organic foods; unfortunately, the naturalist ones didn't think of using natural soap and shampoo, daily. The natural body oils that some were afraid of washing off, could be replaced with essential oils. They even had those, back then. They chose to be dirty and funky.

Vivien Leigh was fanatical about being clean including a routine for placing her clothes under a special cover ready to be cleaned, she was also very particular about her white gloves, ensuring they were immaculate and changed them several times a day. In all the research I’ve done and the biographies I’ve read I have never heard of any person commenting on her personal care. Obviously she did suffer from severe depression therefore it is unforgivable that she is included in this video!

You could have added Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Tallulah Bankhead and Lupe Velez who were also Notorious Non-Bathers. I was very surprised to see Joan Fontaine on this dubious list. A lot of these actors were born and grew up when regular bathing / hot n cold plumbing wasnt accessible, it was not an uncommon habit to take a bath once a week, usually on Saturday night. One would wash one's pits and privates (maybe) during the week. Also, women had a dubious habit of applying another sprinkle of body talcum and face powder. We take heaps for granted these days, especially in North America. What would we do in the Developing World and Tropical climates...? Im glad some commentators made to correlation between excessive Smoking and the body odor. Im not surprised that many stars stunk to high-heaven after four or five packs of unfiltered schmokes.

I walked into a ski resort employee locker room and a coworker was there and he smelled a bit and very politely told him. He replied he had been living at his girlfriend's place and had no clean clothes but had the next three days off and was going to clean up, do laundry, and clean his apartment. Three days later I walked into the locker room, and it stank, I had to go around two corners to get to the lockers and there he was. He smelled so bad I couldn't stand it and I used to work around cattle. I got right in his face and told him he stank, bad. I can't recall his reply. That evening at quitting time I noticed he wasn't in the locker room. Later I asked a coworker that seemed to know everything going on at the resort about him. They fired stinky shortly after I told him he stank. The guy had been sleeping on the streets of Denver for three days shooting heroin.
