The fact that any actor could do a good job working with a fellow actor who has personal hygiene issues is amazing to me. It would probably be impossible for me to not make that face that we all make when we can’t stand the smell of something or someone if I had to work closely with someone who reeked. Thinking back to the 1940/50’s, before modern plumbing and central heating here in the UK, bath night was once or twice a week because of the cost of heating a boiler for hot water…..but that was for us mortals, not wealthy movie stars. Nowadays, missing a daily shower is a very rare occurrence for most of us.

In my mum's and dad house in the 1950's the water was heated on the old fashioned coal fired range, because we couldn't afford the shilling for the gas meter to use gas the boiler. Our bath was also taken in front of that range to keep warm in a large galvanised bath.

Yeah, it was very common back then for people to not take care of their hygiene as often as we do now. It started to change in the 60s and 70s as people started using water more often to take care of their hygiene and the technology in hygiene products became better too.

Sometimes bad breath can come from stomach issues. It isn’t always dental issues. I’m sure people only bathed maybe a few times a week in the 20s/30s/40s. I think that was the norm back then.

Most people only bathed once a week. Only washed hair once a week. It was the norm. Some children were bathed together. Babies. Young children were the exception. It took a lot of work and ti.e to heat water etc. Systems were not as efficient. Skin and hair were not stripped of natural oils so were much healthier.. there were exceptions of course. People didn't smell or perhaps we didn't notice e since everyone lived the same. Brushing teeth was important once or twice a day. Tooth powder , baking soda with or without salt. O fluoride. Toothpaste.

Technology in hygiene products got significantly better as time wore on. Seems to me that the people who struggle with depression are most prone to neglect hygiene. It happens to me. Im on prozac, so it dont happen much anymore. But i can remeber going two weeks without showering. I just didnt care. Its been a long time since that has been an issue, but i still feel that way from time to time. The difference is that im able to get through those times without giving up on everything. Life is better now. Of you have depression, i urge you to seek treatment. It does work.

Awesome comment! I take Welbutrin for depression, it turned my life around. But I was exactly the same when depressed. Being unwashed just felt normal. Two weeks without changing clothes or showering was sometimes on the low side for me. Like you said, you just don't care. Being in that condition was in a weird way almost like comforting for me. At a certain point it gets so bad it all blends together. I'm glad you found help and that it worked!

As far as hair washing goes with the women, it was common practice to wash hair once a week. I even remember my mother doing this in the 60’s. Hair has to be rolled up wet in curlers, then it would take about 24hrs to dry before you could comb it out. So for a whole day of the week you were stuck inside with curlers in your hair. Stretching that out to 2 weeks would probably commonly occur. Then your hair would reek as everyone smoked back then too. It was a pain in the neck to achieve the hairstyle of the day.

There is a medical condition where some protiens and enzymes are not processed in the body. They are present in urine and sweat. And can have a very funky odour. In some cases smelling of fish. Its not a hygeine problem. And the sufferer cant do much until diagnosed. Then testing can isolate the problem foods, and diet can make a big difference. Id also like to mention that movie soundstages are hit, very hit. And a shooting day can be many hours long in cistume. Actors cant have a quick shower to deal. Not when hair, makeup and continuity are important.

Back in the day hot water was hard to come by, you either had to heat water by the pot full on wood stoves or take a cold bath. Hot water heaters were invented in the 1890's and didn't really become popular until after WW2. GI's coming home had gotten spoiled having hot water in every Latrine and shower. Yep a bath every week and once or twice in the winter was gospel before hot water heaters.

It's really hard to deal with people that have bad body oder especially when they work very close to you. Took a woman out to a movie and dinner in my younger days, she was so beautiful couldn't figure out why she was still single until we got close, she had a really bad body oder and she had just had a shower.
