I kind of think that nostalgia can be a good thing when artists are mixing the things they love to create something new. The problem now is that we’re just regurgitating the same stuff wholesale over and over again. In 1977, George Lucas mashed together Flash Gordon, The Searchers, Kurosawa, Joseph Campbell, Dune, etc and made Star Wars. That’s how creativity ought to work. Nowadays we just have endless Star Wars content that tries to milk the original movies for all they’re worth, with diminishing returns.
@AbbieRee4 ай бұрын
it does seem to come across that way sometimes almost as if originality and creativity has no part in the project at all leading it to feel quite hollow and for a quick “cash grab”. There’s plenty of original film out there. The problem is that audiences don’t really show up for those anymore while they do still show up in droves for whatever the latest marvel or Star Wars movie is, no matter how much they complain about it afterwards. So the people really are the ones to blame here, not creatively bankrupt studio executives.

Nostalgia is a very powerful thing. For example I’m Nostalgic about things that I wasn’t even really apart of. I was born in 1996 but my personal era of fashion and music is from 1997 to 2003, when I was a toddler and young child. As I got older I just gravitated to stuff from 1997 to 2003 in my personal taste. I dress like I’m from that period, most of the music I listen to is from that period, I was just born 10 years too late. But the simple reason why Nostalgia is bigger than ever today is because nothing new is being created today. We are living in a Post Modern Era now where nothing is new anymore, so we have to pick stuff from the past.

Nostalgia Bait is a mix for me. I do like listening to music from the past since some music of today isn’t inspired or interesting. But I don’t like how nostalgia bait is used just to make money. This video is very interesting and hats off for the amount of work you have to make these, because the amount of reasearch and reading that you have to do everytime must be crazy! For me, I would say the worst case of nostalgia bating that I had, beyond Marvel, is probably Doctor Who. The series was great for a long time, started to fall off during 2017 onwards and during the 60th years special of the show back in 2022 (I think) they announced the most popular duo of the show would be together again for 3 episodes only reprising their role and then they would move on as this particular show always does. Well, 2 of the episodes were nice, but the very first special was purely a "hey, I hope you are having fun with these characters that you knew before, because we are using them to make it harder to notice the gigantic big amount of plot holes and flaws our story have".

The real reason for all the nostalgia bait is simply capitalism. The big studios aren't willing to invest in new projects because they are risky. Nostalgia sells. I think all the Disney live action remakes are a good example of this.

Another thing I see more and more is profiting from the parasocial relationships. KPOP, Taylor Swift, and many influencers deliberately cultivate the feeling like they are a part of the lives of their idols. There's a lot of enmeshment between fans and creators/artists and a blurring of private life/public life. Not only does this let them extract more money from fans (esp young ones), but it also can intensify harassment from fans (both against the artist and against anyone who criticizes them). As well as worsening an unhealthy obsession with the rich/powerful that blinds fans to their faults or problematic behaviour. They used to be a byproduct of media consumption and now they are deliberately cultivated and intensified by marketing strategies. I used to be very big into Marvel and Star Wars (and I still love many of their movies/books/comics, don't get me wrong). But the latest wave is disappointing. Oversaturation is a big problem with them, too. It seems like quality over quantity.
@alfiedorner81434 ай бұрын
On the one hand I think Nostalgia hinders true innovation in franchises that sorely need it... but on the other hand I eat it up every single time if it's something I used to love when I was young. Seeing Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man again was a dream come true, Michael Keaton returning as Batman was incredible even in a movie that was lacking in most other places. I even liked Indiana Jones 5, it made me feel so giddy. There's no better example of the power of Nostalgia than Season 3 of Star Trek Picard, they tried to do something unique with the first two seasons, it didn't work, so to re-ignite interest Paramount just made Season 3 the greatest Nostalgia Bait of all time, and most everyone loved it. The only few times in recent memory where Nostalgia Bait didn't work with a series I cared about was with Jurassic World: Dominion and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. I love the old cast and it would have been nice to see them again, if only they actually cared about the films they were making, those two films were so bad the nostalgia spell didn't work. If its going to be done then it has to be done properly with everyone involved giving 110% Hope you get the job btw

I think nostalgia can be good if done right or if it hasn’t been done for a while. I think the mainstream which I kind of hate to point are probably running out of ideas so they talk to people they know and ask what they miss or they mention it and I can understand but not realising it could have long term effects where you could get bored. For me variety I always go with it where I don’t stick to one landing but try different landings in many different genres whether it is music, film, tv series, video games etc. For me once something goes mainstream I hate to a point of being popular and sometimes being popular isn’t always the best. In short term it can be but once that goes it does hit really hard. On the good for nostalgia I think we need sometimes as long we do it in a health way.

Nostalgia bait can work if it comes from a place of love. Deadpool & Wolverine was nostalgia bait coming from a place of love. Marvel/Disney bringing back Robert Downey Jr to play Dr Doom just reeks of desperation that screams “our moves and show suck now and we want you to come back please .”
@mynameisreallycool14 ай бұрын
I disagree with Deadpool and Wolverine coming from a place of love. It just felt pointless and corny, and it doesn't make sense for him to be alive after Logan. We could've just had another Deadpool movie, that's fine, but Logan didn't need to be there, and they purely brought him back to make more money. It's not like the fans wanted him to come back to life (at least I don't remember fans wanting that). Many fans accepted the ending of the Logan movie.

Other actors in the mcu have played more than one character. Actually a lot of actors in either the big screen or little screen have played more than one character. How come we turn a blind eye when the same actor has played a different character in the mcu like Gemma chan? She played a character in captain marvel (a member of the kree race) before playing cerci in the eternals. Also dr doom became iron man in 2016 in civil war 2. Rdj playing another character itself isn't really nostalgia bait it's just him playing another character and he apparently wanted to return to the mcu in some way shape or form

In cinema, I don't think I've ever liked it, but i get why it happens. Its a safe bet. Why risk money on a new IP when you can just revive an old one? We saw it with Star Wars, Ghost Busters, Ocean's. No matter how bad the PR is before release, it always gets people to the cinema's. I'd prefer it if reboots where aimed at continueing the story somehow, but most of the times it just tries to "recapture the magic". Which means most of the time, it fails. Actors are older, storylines need to be simplified for new viewers, practical effects get replaced for CGI and characters are usually writen as depressed old people that are reminiscing their glory days themselves, so they are going on one last adventure. In a way it always forces me to be even more aware of the passing of time and how times change, which seems to be the opposite of what it is supposed to achieve. To answer the question of the day: The worst type of nostalgia baiting I know is when DJ's takes the melodies of old electronic music, barely update it and add the most bland, stale, meaningless lyrics to make it seem like a new song. I feel its somewhere between tricking older people into getting a song stuck in their head quickly and tricking youngsters into thinking its a completely new thing. Examples include: David Guetta, Bebe Rexha - I'm good & Sam Feldt, Jonas Blue - Crying On The Dancefloor
@AbbieRee4 ай бұрын
Wow I can tell how much thought went into this and I too think that when it comes to introducing a new audience to a franchise sometimes the story and plot takes a nosedive. like you said almost to simplify it and make it more palatable leaving old fans disappointed. It took me a few minutes to process that this wasn’t Marvel trolling like they usually do. Honestly, a better and even PERFECT idea to bring him and other actors back would be to bring the Supreme Intelligence back! The Supreme Intelligence takes the appearance of whoever the viewer admires meaning they can be played by anyone! I don’t care that Carol killed them. We’re in the Multiverse era; they can have their own variant. Maybe they know they’re doing and it’s not desperate. We have two more years to figure it out

Western culture is dying. There is very little new talent. Just look at movies, TV and comic books over the last decade. Nostalgia bait is really all the companies have left. Most modern media, art and fashion is bland. Hence people are going back to older media and fashion that had a spark of creativity, style and energy to it. There is also a longing for a time when the West was a nicer place to live.
@JasperLane4 ай бұрын
Sticking just to movies and shows since I don't care about fashion and I am not super into music. I don't think that the current issues facing Hollywood is that they are relying on nostalgia too much these days, I think it is a symptom of a far more serious problem, and that is the writing for these shows/movies is just garbage and often not fun. The people being put into positions of writing these movies are not good or talented and when you have someone of such little skill using a brand can mitigate some of the issues that come with that. If you're doing a sequel then at the very least characters are already made for you with their own personality with a history of the kind of story that should be made. Yet maybe the writer is so bad you do not trust them doing even that, well a remake is an even better option! It already has a script you just need to copy and paste that and your good because they are not actually writers they are leeches. Yet this alone is not the only issue, after all, if these people did just copy and paste the original work then we would still be getting good movies, but these "writers" for some reason think they are capable of writing and think they can do better. It is why every single Disney live action remake has been worse, because they think they can do better and in the process they muck it all up and they are to prideful to just copy what came before it. This is what I think is the main issues, a serious lack of talent and skill in Hollywood at this moment. As for RDJ coming back as Doom, lets not forget that even if he did find sucess in Openhimer most of RDJs work has not exactly been a success. Dolittle, Love and Distrust, and plenty of others have either underperformed or are just bad. Nothing coming close to his time as Ironman, I think in a way this is him chasing that same scale in a similar yet different way, but also I bet Disney offered him a cubic fuckton of money. Like good God he was paid $75 million in Endgame so he might be on his way to breaking the record for most amount of Money a single actor has been paid for one movie.

I think nostalgia bait is at its worst when a character shows up, doesn’t do anything, and then immediately dies. Stuff like the Arrowverse or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I find most nostalgia bait hate to be a little over blown and hive mind ish. Some people seems to complain about sequels literally featuring any references to past movies whatsoever, even though the movie itself is largely different, which is so odd to me. A good example being Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
@AbbieRee4 ай бұрын
Interesting points! There does seem to be a line between using it in a good way to introduce it to a new audience/generation but when it’s just done for money it comes across very unoriginal and uninspired! Thank you for your comment on the topic I really do appreciate it ☺️
@ntcnetwork99344 ай бұрын
@@AbbieRee for sure! There’s a lotta nuance that I think “film bros” are missing by buying into the narrative that “all nostalgia is bad, all sequels are bad” blah blah blah. That kinda thing. I know someone who’s like that, and she doesn’t like No Way Home only because it brought back older actors. Made her completely numb to the actual movie for some reason. Dumb mindset imo!
@patrickgroening56643 ай бұрын
Im definitely feeling fatigue towards this nostalgic trend but tbh I think that is just the style of the 2020s. Once we hit the 2030s in sure I will miss this decade the same way i miss the 2010s. At a certain point I think you just have to realize that no matter what time you live in the past will always seem like it was better when in reality it never was. People hated the 2010s but now they it’s gone suddenly we all miss it.

It's sad to me that this day and age peole have to apologize for enjoying DC over Marvel in any capacity. I love both but, DC was the originators, the A team, the big boys on the block and overral most of the stuff Marvel is known for today was rip off of DC and they did most of it first. NOT all but MOST, this is a fact.. outside of the few standouts like Spiderman, Hulk X-men, Blade. Cap. Amer, Thor, black Widow were a non-factor to most outside of Comic enthusiasts /superhero fans. I had to say my peace, as if it wasn't for MCU, Marvel would still be second fiddle. 🙄 Just a reminder for some of ya'll. Put some 'spect on DC name.

Nostalgia bait in modern gaming almost feels like a feature of the medium now. Its becoming increasingly rare (outside of indie games) to find games that aren't remakes, remasters, re-imaginings, reboots, re-releases or sequels of previously established IP. I mean every game that was up for game of the year last year could fall into one of these categories. Its not too big an issue for now as video games are still a relatively new and rapidly developing form of entertainment meaning that nostalgia can be used in unique ways that haven't yet been seen in the medium, like with Final Fantasy 7's remake using the players knowledge of the pre-existing story to defy their expectations of what's to come, but its only a matter of time until the frequent attempts at nostalgia bait become trite and overplayed as it is with other mediums.

You can sometimes see which projects are being made with the intentions for cash grab. With music, I am so happy that Charlie xcx is releasing hyper pop cause this whole generation needs that. The same with other artist releasing more upbeat music Really Enjoy the video!!

Nostalgia has always been a part of Hollywood... But RDJ aint it. There have been multiple actors who played different characters in the same franchise, whats the big deal? Do you know how Tony and Victor are connected in the comics? and Marvel is currently in the *MULTIVERSE SAGA* which means infinite versions of everyone and everything are possible. Lmao but dont do any research or anything, just parrot whatever youve heard.

As you said, there's nothing inherently wrong with nostalgia bait. It's usually just a problem of poor writing. Problems start to arise when studios think that nostalgia can serve as a replacement for a good story. That was the case for Deadpool and wolverine for me. Let's hope it's not the case for Avengers
