People like Shia take themselves WAY to seriously... and i think it stems from insecurity, but he hides behind arrogance and seriousness. Feeling like no one will take him seriously if he doesnt show how absolutely IMPORTANT this role/movie/career is. Trying to prove how important acting is... is just a way to convince himself that HE is important. It reminds me of influencers when they try to convince people how hard being an influencer/content creator is.... Shia's situation is just 10 fold... and he is just doing it to make himself feel more important because deep down he knows its really not that deep or difficult, and thats a hard pill to swallow. Its all projection.

Or maybe thats the way it looks like from an outsider looking into a celebrities life in a superficial manner. There may be a truth to what you say or it may sound convincing enough that it becomes the whole truth, but maybe its more than just wanting to be taken seriously like also seeking fulfillment in roles that he does. It could be partially wanting to feed his own narcissistic ego, but it could also be his never ending self indulgent pursuit of artistic fulfillment that many artists search for throughout history.

AH i went to the strasberg institute and let me tell you…. Shaia, Jared Leto, and many more don’t know what they’re talking about. I doubt they’ve ever read Lee’s books. Method is actually really cool and useful for actors. It’s not “living in the role” on and off set. It’s living truthfully under a set imaginary circumstances from moment to moment. Essentially, the goal is to utilize the actors own lived experiences and recall them at will to inform the delivery of the lines. Hence, moment to moment. Thanks for a great video!! It’s no surprise to me that most of these extreme “method” actors are men, priding themselves on their dedication to roles whilst simultaneously misinterpreting + misrepresenting the technique they claim to study. The hubris is astounding.

"There was no acting going on for the front half of my career." This might be one of the most honest things any actor has ever said at any age. All the way through Transformers, Indy 4, he essentially channels the same character, which is Louis Stevens, which is kid Shia. That's why I didn't really get excited watching anything he was in, because I knew what to expect from him onscreen. Kind of like Zendaya. But Fury was a good movie.

I still don’t get all the ppl who are gushing about his brilliance in every acting role when the most he does is what Jared Leto does, just do crazy controversial bullshit that antagonised co-stars, conflicts with directors and is practically self-obsessed pretentious posturing. I cant believe ppl think he was the best part of Megalopolis. He’s fine in Fury but did he really need to pull his tooth out and cut his face for it? Now he's trying to walk back on things he admitted to doing that are totally irredeemable, particularly in regards to FKA Twigs. I don't even care why he ended up like this anymore, no matter what might have happened, he kept choosing to lean into this kind of behavior. I really enjoyed the video, and I am left wondering (for the first time) if our obsessions with gritty, realistic portrayals may beg this kind of "method" acting--perhaps better described as performative living. It seems to me that a performance is lauded to the extent that it feels and looks real. On my youtube homepage, I regularly see creators posting content asking: How does this performance/movie compare to the real thing? And it is heavily implied that realism is paramount. And, while I think there may be some truth to what another commenter wrote regarding a need to feel important, still, I think that Shia (and Christian Bale) may just be giving the people what they want. It doesn't get more authentic than when your face is bloated from excess drinking or your face is cut (or you lose a ton of weight--or you gain a ton of weight...) *edit: P.S. I like the T-shirt very much.

You know, reviewing method acting makes me realize that sometimes there are things people need to question. For me, I can let slide: 1. An actor/actress practicing their character's language with others offset in order to sound like their from the story's setting. 2. An actor/actress working out, practicing sports or taking up bootcamp in order to look actual physical for their character if they're playing an athlete or action hero. 3. Actors/actresses finding something to cause an emotional impact on them if the scene is something of dramatic sadness. 4. Actor/actresses staying in their character's clothing if it's for a certain job or career they have, like being a cop, lawyer, accountant, doctor, dock worker, or even construction worker. 5. Actors/actresses even taking up the actual job their character's do for real. As many would want to show a truthful depiction, and want to show that it's not as easy as it looks. And would gain insight into how to do it better or where they're doing good. 6. Actors/actresses playing someone with a severe illness or disability, and would request for the cast and their companions offset to assist them with anything in order to learn how such an illness or disability should be depicted. 7. Actors/actresses living for a long time like their characters in a historical time for authenticity, that's IF THEY'RE DOING IT ON THEIR OWN. Some things I'd have mixed feelings about are: 1. Actors/actresses falling in love and dating in real life if they're playing an actual couple, in order to sell romantic chemistry. Because, if one of them is married or seeing someone, then it will start controversy and toxicity within. BUT, if both of actors/actresses are single people, then I wouldn't see no issue with it. 2. An actor/actress getting physical with themselves if their in a comedy with slapstick violence. Now for this, if they consented with others about what they'd do, and promise to pay for any pain and suffering they will inflict, then I'd be okay with this. Since the cast members are aware that the audience are watching a comedy but laugh very hard to seeing them in pain. 3. Actors/actresses dressing up in an "absurd" way (I'm thinking of clown/mimes, cross-dressers, robots, supernatural monsters or primitive wild human.). Again, as long as the cast, crew, and your companions offset are aware of the character you're playing, and aren't causing any form of harassment to them, then there's no problem. Since you don't want to be a problem for them, but also want to be convincing as such a character, therefore need everyone to believe that you are one. 4. Actors/actresses losing or gaining weight to play someone insanely skinny or fat. For this, if they speak with a doctor and understand the consequences but still get recommendations to learn how to get help if they're in pain, then I'd be okay with this. Since they'll know that they'll need medical attention when things get out of hands and see that this amount of weight they've gain or lost is more than enough and won't overexert themselves that it may kill them. 5. Actors/actresses smelling like they haven't showered in weeks. Again, if they speak with those around them beforehand, and explain that's it's how their character would look, then there's no problem. 6. Actors/actresses playing someone antagonistic that they get physical. Most would want to make such an antagonistic so horrible and evil so that the audiences will be disgust when they become physical with someone very innocent and sweet. But if they don't tell their cast members beforehand, this will be lead for them to believe they're being assaulted or bullied for real. Again, CONSENT BEFORE DOING 7. Having everyone address an actor/actress by their character name. Now I can understand not wanting to forget that you're playing a character, but if you're just ordering everyone to do so for attention, then that's a problem. Now if it's because you're playing an important figure like a world leader, military commander/general, or politician, then I see that as fine, since these are very important figures who have an authoritative presence about them, and not just some normal person. But then there's just actors/actresses being just sick a-holes: 1. Showing up late to set or stopping the production, but claiming "it's what my character would do". 2. Causing a scene offset, to the point of making everyone's life a nightmare to be around you, but claiming, "It's in my character.". 3. Not reading or memorizing their lines and just "talking shop" on at the camera, that nobody understands what to say next, or if they should cut. 4. Invading the cast and crew's personal space and calling them names, for no other reason but to "be in character". 5. Making absurd demands despite having no bearing to the character or even having any effect in general. 6. DRUGS. I mean, what can I say other than that? And the worst part about all of these is that while most actors who behave this way end up getting fired or facing a lawsuit, if you're Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Edward Norton, Sean Penn, Marlon Brando, Joan Crawford, Marylin Monroe, Madonna, Lea Michele, or Faye Dunaway nobody would bat an eye at them because they're a BIG NAME IN HOLLYWOOD, who are in good with the head producers. They'll throw out any newcomers who tried acting like this, but anyone who brings them the money will be entitled to do whatever and however they want. Therefore, shielding them from the consequences of their self destructive behaviors. That's not acting or method acting, that's just a jerk who's getting away with things that should put you in prison.

The wildest thing an actor has done for a role that I can think of is Christian Bale's body transformation for The Machinist especially because it isn't even that good of a movie there was no need for risking permanent body injury. After rewatching your previous video on Method acting and this one I am starting to think maybe it has more ritualistic value than anything else, kind of OCD. It makes sense to repeat "the method" that gave you success the last time especially if your career seems on a turbulent path. As for Shia LaBeouf, I think he is just the product of Hollywood like many child actors that grew up in the Hollywood environment, got tons to media attention and which dissipated quickly. PS: I like your 🟧T-shirt, but I like your background setup event more specifically the dial phone we had a phone exactly like that in my home when I was a kid.

I respect actors who can immerse themselves in a role by going method as long as they're still looking after themselves and not affecting the productivity of others. But provoking other actors into altercations and making others uncomfortable...really? And I can see how not bathing or actually removing his teeth may help Shia get into his character's mindset, but is this going to have an impact on the audience? Like are they going to even notice that? Reminds me of when Ashton Kutcher played Steve Jobs and went method by going on the same fruit diet as Jobs...which caused Kutcher to be put in hospital for a few days. Seems that some actors try so hard to get into their character's head that they end up getting into their own and unnecessary hurt themselves.

Wonderfully explained, I would agree when it comes to some things actors do to themselves for a role it does make you question why, as in to get a tattoo for a role vs having it be makeup the audience wouldn’t know the difference. He didn't reappear in my life until his motivational videos became a meme and subsequently from his "not my president" livestream debacle. I always kind of assumed that he was just another slightly crazed actor trying to put himself in the spotlight by striking up some controversy. Because I've been out of the Shia loop for so long, most of this information is new to me. From this information it's probably safe to say he has some deeper rooted issues that go beyond his "method" approach. QotC: There is not a crazy "method" thing that comes to mind, so I will just appreciate how Tom Cruise is known to do his own stunts like jumping out of a plane or hanging off the side of the Burj Khalifa! Let’s say there’s an actor who is good but not great and then they have a role that is regarded as the best performance of their career. Then it’s revealed that they went method for that role having not previously been a method actor. To me that would take away from that performance. Being a good actor to me is about being able to put on a huge range of different characters and performing them all convincingly. Going method is about doing something that ingrains who the character is into you. Admittedly when you’re watching a film they both have the potential to be just as impactful on the audience. As an aspiring director, an actor with a history of going method wouldn’t put me off working with them but I would certainly want some more information about how far they’d gone for roles in the past. The atmosphere on a set can often be delicate for a number of reasons adding more variables to that isn’t always a good idea

Shia LaBeouf is one of the few actors I find interesting and will watch anything he does even though I feel like he's the type of person that can't tell the difference between reality and fiction Shia has time and time again made an absolute ass of himself and worse at times he's strange but that's what makes him so interesting. Abbie you is a legend keep smashing it loving the quality of your videos.

Whyyyy do people still hire him when all this information is out there. He should be in prison not in movies

Somebody with money should just cast Shia in the role of Superman. Don't even release the movie, just have him method act as a kind, compassionate, genuine, generous, patient, thoughtful person. Let that rub off on him a bit.

Think Shia entered this world with something unfinished. Maybe reincarnation is real, and he never got his last word in the last life. Idk

I remember watching the filming of the battle of shaker heights on HBO as a kid and it was the first time i saw him outside of Even Stevens and he was swearing up a storm and acting like such a douche i was so confused as a young kid 😆. Now as an adult i see the things hes dome and its sad bc i feel like he can ger help but whether he goes for it or not idk but i hope he does. Anyway, This video was great. Had my attention all the way through. Very well done.

I’ve always rooted for Shia. Since he was part of my childhood. His acting is incredible and I do hope he’ll be able to manage himself out of this method way of acting. Also, learning that The Rock pees in bottles. That’s insane. Can’t forget about Jared Leto sending dead animals

Not only is LaBeouf a completely selfish, creepy and abusive narcissist. After doing all that "for his art", he's such an overrated actor. Another great vid Abbie.
