The most recent Alvin and the Chipmunks movie came out on the same day as the Force Awakens. One of the biggest box office slaughters of all time.

Dokemon Studios Given all the hype around it, there's no way they weren't aware of the release date. They did this intentionally. It wasn't a failure like they wanted it to be. It still made money, through the roof or not.

Fun fact: Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakel killed traditionally Disney animated films! Princess and the Frog was beaten by the Squeakel at the box office, which led to Disney shutting down their traditional animation department for good. Fuck, I hate these films.

@MrXemnas1992

Nope. Squeakel made $443 million; Princess and the Frog made only $267 million....what kind of parents take their kids to a shitty CGI/liveaction Chipmunks sequel instead of a gorgeously animated Disney film?!

Tangled was already in production. But Princess and the Frog''s box office performance led to Frozen and Moana being CGI instead of 2D as originally planned and Winnie the Pooh being their final 2D animated film. Princess and the Frog was supposed to be the big traditional animation comeback but Alvin and the Chipmunks ruined that.

Honestly Princess and the Frog just wasn't that good plus there's probably underlying racism with the lack of money it made. It's a bummer tbh

Man it's sad that I can answer the origins questions after all these years. For the Chipmunks, the three boys are left on Dave's doorstep by a covered person, who we find out from a letter is their mother, who can't keep them fed due to a nut shortage. Dave takes them into this relatively rundown cabin in the middle of the forest and gets driven nuts by their actions. Somewhere during the time, the boys sing lyrics to Dave's song (Witch Doctor), which after some mayhem and chaos ends up at a radio station. The boys sneak in and play the recording and people call in loving it. After more mayhem and some negotiation by Alvin, Dave gets a huge raise, they all move to a much nicer house, and the chaos continues. This also goes the full circle later on in a special episode where the boys go hunting to find their lost mother, and are successful doing it. For the Chipettes, you guys are right about the orphanage, but it's in Australia. The orphanage is bad, and some chaos ensues, but eventually the girls leave Australia (via a kangaroo on land and by stowing away on a cruiser) to the US (probably New York), where they "squeak" out a living on the streets until they find a audition notice in California. Hopping a bus and add in some chaos, the girls put on an impromptu show in gridlock traffic to the person hosting the auditions, who signs them on the spot. Although I actually wish the movies took more from the Alvin Show in the 60's as well as the 80/90's cartoons. There was so much there to work with, and basically none if it was ever used.

Hey I'd like to point out that the Chipmunks' mother had to give them up due to a harsh winter, all the animals were leaving the forest and Vinny (mother chipmunk) was afraid her kids wouldn't survive the journey. And that's when she spotted Dave's cabin and left them on his doorstep since he was always kind to the forest animals.

To be frank, Simon’s claim about their parents leaving them on their own in the live-action films is more truer to life as male chipmunks leave as soon as their offspring are born and the female take care of their offspring for 4 or 6 weeks before abandoning them to let them survive on their home. Real life chipmunks don’t care as much for their offspring as humans do.

Idk why I'm thinking about it, and I know the casting would be so misfit, but I really wanna see Christopher Walkin as either Dave or Cross's character. This movie left so little impact I dont remember Cross's character name. I'm not saying Walkin would make the movie better, but it would be interesting and funny. It's like the Tim Curry effect, for every 1 star a movie has, he's the reason it has that star, same goes for Walkin in my opinion lol

Agreed. I mean I didn't hate the first live action "Alvin and the Chipmunks", as it felt like the people making it were Chipmunks fans in the past, but were probably pressured by FOX to make it be as little in spirit to it and instead make it exactly like every other live action adaptation. I mean sure "The Chipmunk Adventure" barely had much of a plot, but it was a hell of a lot more fun, and did as much with what little it had.

I looked it up a while ago- apparently the chipmunks origin story (at least in the 80's cartoon) was that their mother was raising them alone, but was trying to survive a harsh winter, knowing if she fled their home with all of them, they would not survive the journey (them being so small and weak). She had seen Dave before in the park and saw he was nice to animals, so she left them on his door, planning to return in the spring. When Spring came around, she saw how much better off and happy they were with him, so she left them with Dave.

I've seen the first live action movies, but I haven't seen the others. Does Alvin ever end up acting like Alvin? I was also confused by Alvin getting stage fright. Here are my top 11 films the Nostalgia Critic should review: 11. 4kids Month. In the late 90's and early 2000's, 4kids dubbed a few anime shows. Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon being the most famous. 4kids was also known for censoring some scenes and episodes, and the most infamous example was the dreaded 4kids dub of One Piece, which also had some shitty voice acting. A month of 4kids anime would make for some hilarious material. 10. Raiders of the Story Arc 2.0. Back in the old days, the Nostalgia Critic looked back at some nostalgic cartoons from the 90's. He should bring Raiders of the Story Arc back with some more nostalgic cartoons. Here are a few examples: Biker Mice From Mars, the Street Fighter cartoon and maybe even the first few episodes of Pokemon (he reviewed the first movie, so he might as well look at the show). 9. Noah. Worst Bible adaptation ever. It pissed of religious and non- religious movie goers alike. It was even banned in some Muslim countries (can't really blame them). 8. Thumbelina. This was one of the few Don Bluth films I grew up with. I know Don Bluth lost his touch in the 90's and that the Nostalgia Chick already reviewed this film, but since Doug is a Don Bluth fan, I'd like to see a Nostalgia Critic review of this film. 7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. One of the most hated sequels of all time. I didn't find it that bad myself, but it's definitely inferior to the original trilogy. Nostalgia Critic already reviewed the Temple of Doom and had a debate with the Cinema Snob about which movie was worse, so a review of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull would be funny. 6. Hangover 2. Having a problem with the rehash of Home Alone 2? It's nothing compared to this one. 5. Anastasia. This Don Bluth movie got mixed reviews, but I'd like to hear Doug's thoughts. 4. Pure Magic's Hercules. Known on KZbin as "The Best Hercules Movie Ever", this movie has bad writing, cheesy voice acting and animation that makes the CD-i games look like they were made by Don Bluth. It has become sort of an internet meme recently. But to give it some credit, this version is closer to the original Hercules story than the Disney version. 3. The Twilight Movies. Need I say more? 2. Troll 2. One of the worst movies of all time. I'm surprised he hasn't reviewed this one yet. 1. The Warcraft movie. The critics gave it the same negative reviews as video game movies in general, but as a Warcraft player myself, I thought it was OK (give or take a few changes from the source material). Since Doug hasn't played WoW and doesn't know anything about the lore, it would have to be a crossover with someone who has played it and knows the lore, such as Nobbel. One could look at it from a cinematic point of view, while the other could look at it from a lore point of view.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Meets Frankinstine = Franklinstine comes to life and befriends Theador, crazy scientist, Alvin gets kidnapped, mad scientist makes Alvin drink a monster potion, monster potion makes him go crazy and crash a party, Alvin and movie star almost fall to their death. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman = Alvin gets monster book, teacher is werewolf, Theador is bitten and turned to a werewolf, Alvin tries to get Theador back to normal by hitting him with a silver cane, wolfman attacks the school play, chase scene with the wolfman, the chipmunks, the chipettes and wolf Theador, the most hilarious distractions from Alvin and Britney while the chase scene is taking place and school dance at the end with the chipmunks and chipettes singing my favorite Alvin and the Chipmunks song. CGI live Chipmunks Movies = wtf?

I looked for the answer but just found a bunch of request, so I'm asking, wasn't the original origin story that they were left in a basket on Dave's door step? That's what I vaguely remember.

Yes, there was a special called A Chipmunk Reunion where the chipmunks go to find their mother and she explains to them why she had to leave them at Dave's doorstep. Apparently there was this really harsh winter and the chipmunks were too young to survive it.

The origin story was a movie created specifically to explain it. Basically their mother couldn't care for them for some reason (it was a legit reason but I can't remember it), so she put them in a basket and left them on Dave's doorstep. The movie is the chipmunks finally wanting to find their mom, which they do, and everything is explained. It was well done IMO, I even teared up when I was watching it as a kid at some points.

And this is not an angry rant about what they got wrong in the video lol but there were a couple episodes that explained the origin of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. The first was was called (The Chipmunks Story) and was I believe the 4th episode of season 1. Basically Dave was a struggling songwriter living in a cabin in the woods and some strange figure leaves the 3 chipmunks in a basket outsite his cabin when they were baby's. The second was called ironically (The Chipette Story) and it was the 34th episode of season 3. I think that's the one he's mentioning in the video but I think they came from Australia not russia. The third was actually a half-hour TV special called (A Chipmunk Reunion) and it was basically Alvin Simon and Theodore returning to the woods where Dave found them as babies to try and find out what happened to there Chipmunk mother, I remember it was an alright and somewhat heartwarming special.

Well, I mean, everyone who's said it is absolutely right. The sequels DO get worse. However...........the sequel's sorta got...........progressively worse, as they went on. The Squeakuel.........it's sorta a mix between wacky "WHA-OH! Rock stars dealing with school! Shenanigans!"-type of deal..........mixed in with almost the same plot line of the first..........except with the Chipettes. That's pretty much it. Chipwrecked........scantily clad Chipettes and David Cross in a pelican outfit............and some Castaway bullshit, just............because island adventures......and WHIMSY and treasure! The Road Chip..........the movie just kinda gave up. I mean, they opened the same day as Star Wars. What did they expect? In fact, not spoiling a WHOLE lot here: the supposed "Road Trip" part of the movie..........really doesn't even happen until, like, almost the climax of the movie. And, even then, it's not a "road trip", at all.

I bet Critic's videos get fully monetized (unless they're pulled on copyright charges) because he doesn't add salacious tags or clickbait titles to get more views. Still he may not like YT's policy. It's just "eh" bad at best; this one at least tried in some areas. David Cross is great, the animation on the Chipmunks is good and there's a couple hidden stuff referencing the ACTUAL David Seville that are sort of clever; like Dave's house number being 1958 (the year the chipmunks were created) and the piano Dave plays the Christmas Song on is the ACTUAL piano the real Dave played! Those are nice.

What you said about kids films needing to be huge, fun rides, that's the mindset I'll use when making kids films. I've always wanted to be a filmmaker, and while I have ideas for surreal horror films inspired by the likes of David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Alan Resnick (he's responsible for Alantutorial, Unedited Footage of A Bear and This House Has People In It), I wanted to break from the norm with action comedies inspired by Planet Terror and Maximum Overdrive, as well as kids films both dark (like Goosebumps adaptations since that's my favorite guilty pleasure of all time), and lighthearted. One kids film that I really want to do is one based off of one of my favorite animated shows that's currently on the air, _The Amazing World of Gumball._ I want it to not only be an insane, fun, surreal kids movie with beautiful visuals, but also a parody/satire on bad, lazy, safe, by-the-numbers, and boring kids movies, as well as bad adaptations of kids cartoons, simply because of the _stupid_ excuse "it's a kids movie." The concept of the movie is like a lighthearted Animal Man with similar 4th wall breaking elements, as well as elements of Flashpoint. The show has some of the best satire and meta humor you'll ever see in a kids show.

They don't mention the direct-to-TV movies at all. I know they were made in '99 and 2000 (and also direct-to-TV and not in theaters), but they're still Chipmunk movies. Maybe if enough people bring them up, they'll talk about them. And if you ask me, I think Doug and Rob would think they're pretty solid. Chipmunks hunt the wolfman and Frankenstein. Granted, there's not as much of an adventure for the Wolfman movie, but it still holds up better than the live action films. The Frankenstein movie was good, too. And the chipmunks definitely had their distinct personalities, and it was mostly Alvin leading the trouble-making. I decided to re-watch the movies since I hadn't seen them in years (probably when they first aired), and I just had a huge grin all the way through both of them. They were so charming. Though that makes me wonder... why did they go with monster movies?
