James A Clouder I know. That is why I said I have my hopes up. With The Visit, I saw glimpses of what made M.Night great originally, so I am hoping that this is the beginning of his big comeback and films like The Last Airbender and After Earth will just be considered a long rough patch on his otherwise bright career (or maybe I'm being too optimistic)

I was actually wondering if it was intentional to talk about how much better the twist could be when the hand appeared. Intriguing theory, I know, but the my logical brain is leaning more toward the "someone thought they were too loud and closed the door theory." The hand looked older and slender, maybe Doug and Rob's Mom?

I always felt like Shyamalan insisting that American audiences just don't 'get' his movies but everyone in other countries loves them is the equivalent of that one kid in high school who swore he totally had a super hot girlfriend but she lives in Canada so nobody would know her but SHE'S COMPLETELY REAL YOU GUYS I'M SERIOUS.

I remember when I first saw the trailer for this, the movie looked good and like it'd be a fun thriller and intense movie, and then the trailer showed the "By M. Night Shyamalan" or whatever the credit was for him and there was an audible groan in the audience. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced in trailer-watching; when there's bad trailer usually it's just non-reaction. When there's a good trailer you normally get the usual, laughing at the funny parts, cheering when a favorite character or awesome moment happens, etc. But, no, an actual, loud, GROAN! Had never experienced that before, or sense. People thought this movie looked good until they found out Shyamalan was involved in it. Anyway, the "toast part" doesn't make sense to me. Isn't the whole myth or whatever is that toast always falls jelly-side down? So, wouldn't this mean the devil everywhere? Wouldn't it make more sense for the jelly to land jelly-side UP?! Because *that'd* be unusual and unexpected! I mean, it's still a dumb test; but it'd make more sense.

I think most general audiences in Europe don't even know his name. They don't see him as a joke, but they also don't see him as an artist, misunderstood or otherwise. I think most people don't even know The Sixth Sense and The Last Airbender are directed by the same guy, where I live.

The general audience in Europe is the exact same audience as in America. We grow up with the same movies ad music and what not. I think Shamylan has the potential to be a good director and story teller. The problem is I think he gets to carried away on a creative high before he gives himself a chance to look back and see if this would work for an audience. Like Devil, After Earth, The Happening, Lady in the Water, Village....all have potential and some really good ideas. They just weren't given the proper time to develop. Kinda like how you have a story about female attraction and the choices and responsibility that come with it...and you make Twilight/ 50 shades of grey.
@Kimch87
@Kimch87 8 жыл бұрын
Emilio Reyes I agree. He has potential and he have made good movies. I think the problem he has is that the success of Sixth Sense went up his head and is now clouding his judgement. He thinks that he is a great film maker and doesn't reflect on what is working/isn't working and what is done good/bad and just assumes that it's great almost right away. It's sad really when he could be great.
@mondelsson
@mondelsson 8 жыл бұрын
Emilio Reyes I think he CAN write good films, but he doesn't do it because he tries to shoehorn in a twist that doesn't make sense. I feel like shyamalan has got too caught up in his ego and he needs to take a step back and examine what he's actually doing.
@alexandresobreiramartins9461
@alexandresobreiramartins9461 7 жыл бұрын
He's pretentious and thinks he's the best director ever. That's his fault. He's actually terrible, his movies are very badly directed (my templates for that are people like Tarkovsky, Kubrik and Hitchcock, so you can call ME pretentions, too, if you want), especially when it comes to actors: he has not the slightest idea how real people behave, so his characters are totally stupid. Sometimes I ask myself if he's just an alien who can't understand humanity. It can't be just cultural differences, because he's Indian, as Indians are also human and react like everybody else... except Shyamalan characters.
@northwindkey
@northwindkey 11 ай бұрын
The problem is nobody ever tells Shamylan "No". Filmmaking is collaborative, and everyone will have bad ideas. That's why you need good producers and editors, to tell the director when he's going too far or doing something dumb. No director is immune to this. Truly great filmmaking comes when a director and producers can erase each other's bad ideas and expand on the good. Bad filmmaking comes when one tries to go "My way or the highway" about decisions. Overbearing producers like the idiots who ruined Blade Runner and Kingdom of Heaven are the ones people usually think of with that, but tyranical and egotistical directors are part of that too. Shamylan is one of those directors. He refuses to take notes, he refuses to compromise. He doesn't view filmmaking as a collaboration, he views it as a dictatorship.

See, I really lucked out when I saw Devil. Namely, I didn't know what the movie was called, and I didn't see the starting narration. In fact, the one slimy salesman guy that Doug said was the only weak character just died when I started watching, so the problems were virtually all effectively ignored. As a result, I was in suspense most of the time, with the "jelly side up" guy being tuned out as just the "superstitious 'its-the-devil' guy".

Unpopular opinion: Devil is not so bad - if you forget about some ridiculous moments it can be entertaining. Also I love transitions, like when security guy about to step into water, while fixing electricity and it jump directly to fireman who's electric saw stopped. Quite clever.

There are good demon movies (the ones that actually show demons and not only throw a "monster" that destroy everything under the excuse that "it's a demon") and the idea could fit, the problem is that they tried to put "simbolism" instead of clues and didn't work in making the argument make sense, i mean, in the movie it looks more like an animal, not the devil, a conspirator. The idea could have worked, but Shyamalan didn't make it work

I'm just wondering have you seen or done anything on Cube? Edit: Also, honestly adding the Devil was a good idea. Calling the movie the Devil, showing the devil several times and giving no real mystery or hint to the person inside who might be the killer was what made it bad. If you went in not knowing what was in-stored for them and had to piece the mystery along with the characters than i think it would of been better.

I think that the elevator mystery death would be a great way to start a murder mystery night. If the Devil was used more subtly in the movie it would work, like we know that there is a supernatural entity that some one calls a demon, but it was influencing some one to kill rather than be killer itself so we think the guy is just crazy and we aren't clear on who, or he is interacting with them after they die while watching it play out.

One of these days Shyamalan needs to make a film that while it plays out like any other of his works (or if you like "his don't-works") that when it gets to the end the audience is all like, "there's no twist", "where's the twist?" and "it didn't end on a twist". ....Because that IS the twist!!!

Watching your real thoughts and your review (Nostalgia Critic is actually one of my favourite KZbin shows) , I got to wondering: Could the devil ending work? I was thinking of a foustian tale. The only alteration during the movie would be in the diner. Here the cop would have to expess more hatered for the drunk driver and a wish for revenge. Then before the regular start, add the Faust-wager, but the key being the cop. That give the chance to have the devil exact the revenge, he would not forgive the drunk driver but damn him, thus garanteing that the devil gets his soul aswell. A line could also be added like "and in such wagers, many a pawn has perished. The first one to sign the wager..." *splat suicide guy* I think that would wrap it all up and would explain the confusion. The point would be that the devil is torturing the guy until he confesses and then the cop hast to decide, without knowing of the wager ofcourse. Comments are welcome.

Here's how I'd fix this movie: First, you set up the fact that somebody has been killing people on elevators. Whoever's doing it is smart enough to wipe cameras, block his/her face and otherwise defy security measures. Then you get five people in the elevator, they start going down one by one, and one of them is concluded to be that serial killer. Then, as a twist, the final person commits suicide. Then it is revealed that the serial killer was never in the elevator. They all were so paranoid about their past crimes that they killed each other out of fear, and the last one realized that he/she would be going to jail one way or another, and killed him/herself.

Does anyone else find that Doug's suggestion that the movie should have just featured an ordinary serial killer as the villain wouldn't have really worked either? Think about it, if the villain of the movie was just some regular person who happened to be a serial killer, would that mean the killer would somehow have control over the lights of the elevator, and wouldn't care about getting caught?

I remember hearing when this movie was first being teased in theaters and it was revealed who the writer was the audiences started laughing. Even before it came out people were laughing about it.

My major problems with this movie - apart from the jerk guy and creepy toast guy - are that, in every "closed location mystery" I can think of, the killer turns out to be the person who "dies" two-thirds of the way through. Heck, Agatha Christie basically invented the genre seventy-odd years ago, and she used that exact same solution in her novel. That'd have spoilt it even if the killer hadn't been stupidly obvious from the very beginning (an extremely old being with supernatural powers? Gee, I wonder which of them it could possibly be?) We need a moratorium on characters who blatantly have no reason to be in the film except to be the killer, and then turn out to be the killer. (Hello, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"'s mole - there is zero reason for either this character or this actor to be in this movie, except if they're the mole, which of course they are.) The devil... nobody really suspects her in-movie, she's not the most scared character or the most damaged character or the character with the interesting arc or anything like that. She's just kinda there, then she conveniently "dies", then she comes back as the devil.

i think m. night could make a genuinely good movie if he knew how to edit down. honestly, his first movie was good and it feels like the more praise he got, the less he felt he needed to fix so he just let himself run loose without taking a second to reread.

There's a not so subtle hint that McAvoy actually turns into some kind of werewolf creature; the whole ability to "change your body chemistry" combined with the drawing and the growling noise. Might...be...inter...esting...

That thing they said about ideas that "can't be done" but you should do it because it's a good idea reminds me of something. I would love to see a movie about dinosaurs... with no dialogue. Not even a narrator, you just tell it visually. It would be tricky, but I think you could do it. If nothing else, you would probably get some cool atmosphere and pretty visuals. And yes, they've tried this a few times but always back out.

There is a clue in the movie that the old woman is the Devil. The very first attack that takes place, you see it from the attackers eyes for a split second. The camera is where the old woman was standing. Blink and you'll miss it.
