That Fairmont is still so incredible. It barely lifts when he leaves. Gets right up on the tire and is Gone. No wonder that car never lost. Glidden was a frickin genius. R.I.P. Champ.

I love those old Pro Stock cars, and noticed at least the ones you showed the inside had Lencos, I always hated seeing a nostalgia pro stock car with a powerglide. Great camera work too, I like that you were able to get that close!

@@southtexashustler ...Back in the 1980s there was a guy out of Texas who raced an NHRA legal Pro Stocker that was equipped with a powerglide but that was because he was a paraplegic, can't remember the guy's name tho [Mike was his first name I believe]

Southtexashustler, the guy you are referring too used to work for reher & Morrison, the car he drove was one of shepherds “spare car” equipped with hand controls, a friend of mine (mike Braun) bought the car in Cincinnati & it was silver at the time, he raced it in top sportsman for quite some time before he decided to park it, interesting enough, the only sticker on the car was shepherds cylinders heads on the hood scoop. Mike passed away & the car remain in Cincinnati (for some time) before his wife decided to sell it, where it was purchased by Detzel Bros (Cincinnati) who put a 632 five speed lenco in it & it was painted red, after some years mark Pappas was doing some research & found out that the car was in Cincinnati , the Detzel Bros decided to sell the car rolling & mark restored the car back to its former glory, it’s the exact same car that mark was driving in bowling green. Talk about coming back full circle…….

It’s good to see cars that look like the cars they’re supposed to be representing. Minus the hood scoops, huge slicks they were the same body configuration as the cars on the dealership lots, roofline, doors, front and rear bodies were all “stock” as in Pro Stock instead of Pro Jellybean where the front is stretched 3-4 feet beyond the front tires and the rear of the car is just wide enough for the slicks and the narrowed differential. Not one body part would be the same as stock, NHRA really screwed up this class as they already had ProMod class that had these deformed shaped cars that were to pass as a certain type of car. Won’t even get into the favoritism for a certain brand of car that always had to have some type of advantage over the rest of the class, now they basically have a bunch of jellybeans that they call a camaro and a couple of mustangs with a Chevy engine, yah that’s pro “stock“ just like you find them on the dealer lots.

In 1978, I think that was the year Bob Glidden and his Fairmont, went 12-0. There were only 12 NHRA races that year. At this time or around this time, he qualified #1, 23 times in a row.

@@THROTTLEPOWER I think after the 1978 season, Chrysler signed him to drive a 1979 Plymouth Arrow. 340 W-2 heads. Won the 1979 NHRA Pro Stock championship.. In the middle of 1980, with Arrow, Chrysler was in financial difficulty, pulling the plug in the middle of the season. There goes the 340 W-2 heads. Glidden shows up at the next scheduled NHRA race, where points toward a championship are at stake, with a 1980 Ford Fairmont. Glidden wins yet another NHRA Pro Stock championship.

In many of the quality sessions, Glidden had a .100 advantage on the 2, 3 4 field. After them, it was .200 or more. Hence the 23 straight #1 qualifying sessions. You try to cut a light, red light in the process. You pack up, when is the next race? Don't tell me, HE is gonna be there. Yep. You found 20 more HP. Glidden found double whatever you found.

That should be the current nhra pro class fully tellevised. Then nhra could thrive again. A retro rule version of pro stock is needed. By retro I mean minimum rules. No rpm limit. Allow efi and carburetors both in any configuration. Make a 500 inch class as well as mountain class unlimited cubes. No engine restrictions other than n/a and driver must drive. No electronics etc. A raw clasd that allows intelligent inovation to return to the sport is needed. The modern boost power adder pose meathead classes are just that. Some allowence to think and inovate is badly needed. Then motorsports will thrive. The spectator and crew want substance.
