There's no arguably about it... Streets of Rage is far, far better than Final Fight ever was. Streets of Rage to this day, completely defines the pinnacle of the genre, with only it's two sequels even slightly comparing to it. They are still three of the best videogames ever made. The same can be said of the original Sonic titles for platform games. The Megadrive completely changed gaming. I miss those days so much...

Streets of Rage 2 is undoubtedly the best 16-bit console beat em up and a Top 5 16-bit era game...but is of course never recognized by the Snes-obsessed internet atmosphere. The deep fighting system, the methodical game-play, the variety in attacks over 13 for 4 characters, variety in levels, enemies, and bosses, the phenomenal soundtrack. Also the wide resolution, smooth animation, 2 players plus tons of enemy sprites on screen with no slowdown or flicker AT ALL. No freaking contest. The only Snes beat em up imo that rivals it *in fun factor* but still falls a little short imo is Ninja Warriors, I think that's the best Snes beat em up but SOR2 is the King.
@retrosoul87707 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, but then Sega crafted a sequel with 16 mega power!! (Game Sack ref lol) as opposed to the 4 megabit first game and it ended up looking alot better than Final Fight with it's richer more vibrant colors imo.

I love seeing the fanboys argue in the comments, but really it's just that I loved my mega drive and as a kid you generally only got one unless you were spoiled. I think if I was older at the time and had a paper run or something I probably would have still chose the mega drive because of game prices. The amiga was what got me into gaming and I guess it was easier on my parents wallets since there was an amazing market near me that had loads of "cheap" ;) games, so I had quite a lot on there, we usually went and we all chose a game to get, so yeah I really loved that. Even on the wii I was emulating mega drive over snes though even though earthbound and other rpgs are more my speed now. So yeah say what you want about either, if you have to put it down to nostalgia or logic I'm still for the mega drive :)

(24:10) I remember the Genesis game speed being a selling point. I think the only big mistake Sega made designing the hardware was there's no sprite scaling chip. Not even something that emulates it. And for a company that was focusing on that in the arcade, it made a lot of their ports look quite choppy for years.
@Larry8 жыл бұрын
***** I had both as a kid and I'd opt for a SNES port over Mega Drive. But that's true in 90% of the cases.
@ShapeyFiend8 жыл бұрын
The Mega Drive soundchip was better at synthy stuff. The SNES had the samples which are more versatile but lack punch. A lot of the western Mega Drive games had terrible soundtracks thanks to the awful GEMS sound driver rather than the sound chip being bad in of itself. The MD also had many faster ports than the SNES. I think it was the colour palette let it down most myself. Sprite scaling on 1988 home hardware would probably be a bit pricey!
@Larry8 жыл бұрын
DejaVoodooDoll I totally forgot the Sega CD had sprite scaling, I just had the 32X stuck in my head as that had pretty much perfect ports of Space Harrier and After Burner (strangely no OutRun :S) But what was the Afterburner 3 ad?
@Larry8 жыл бұрын
I did actually look it up when you mentioned it, it does look absolutely terrible. It's not even a proper After Burner game. Even more baffling is why Sega didn't advertise Thunderhawk instead, that used a lot of sprite scaling and looks amazing, even by today's standards.

@metropod5 жыл бұрын
I think at the time Sega's policy was "how can we screw ourselves even further." I think part of them problem was the amount of freedom Sega of America had when compared to Nintendo of America. Kalinske and Company wanted to do their own thing, wasting precious time and money on the 32X, money that could have been spent on things like, oh, I don't know, maybe making the cartage slot on the back of the Saturn accept Gen/Meg carts and have backwards compatibility as a feature, something Nintendo didn't offer outside the Game Boy until the Wii. Sega actually had a offer from Silicon Graphics, the people who designed the chipset used in the N64, offering them the chip first. And Sega turned them down as well.

still can't believe both michael jackson and ayrton senna made their own video game on the same machine. this is what makes it so special nowadays, while back in 90s the super nintendo was a better option, especially as a kid.

get the audio book 'Console Wars' the Sega and Nintendo rivalry from the 80s-90s. I promise you, you will not be disappointed and will end up loving Sega even more. There is a full feature length movie being made based on the book.

@ロボット鳥山 well, Xbox one could be considered DEAD since most main franchises are ported to the Xbox. Like call of duty, they changed from one to the other because they knew of the PS4 superiority. Doom is mainly a PS4 game (I'm only talking about consoles, we all know pc is better), the fucking Spiderman game has everyone losing their heads and its a ps4 exclusive. Same with god of war. Xbox doesn't have any console seller, and don't tell me that halo is a console seller because is just a shitty Doom clone

The Sega Genesis was indeed Sega best fight back against Nintendo and its NES. The 16-Bit era was Sega at its best and it's sad that Sega got too full of themselves that they eventually started going downhill once the Saturn and Dreamcast arrive. Saturn was the nail in the coffin and Dreamcast never had a chance. If there's two things Sega need to eliminate in the 90s, it's the Sega CD and 32X, Sega Cd was unnecessary as Sega is going to launch the Saturn anyways as a better CD-based console and the 32X shouldn't even exist as the Saturn is already a 32-Bit machine. Had Sega just kept the Genesis going for another two years until and after Saturn's launch then Sega would had held better against Nintendo and we wouldn't see the arrival of the PlayStation (cause really Nintendo only went to Sony so to get a CD add-on just like Sega but backdown on the deal and cause Sony to take action to make their own game console).

***** The next big thing in the 16-Bit era was the used of CD format for games and media. Turbo Grafx-16, Sega CD, Jaguar CD, and NeoGeo CD all jump into the hype. Though many of those third parties made a CD add-on or a CD console it was really Sega that attempt to persuade Nintendo to get on the hype for using CD as well. They knew of Nintendo's close relationship with Sony and had they not try to predict Nintendo's ambition, Nintendo wouldn't back away from the attempt. Remember Sega CD's old commercial? The guy in the commercial actually predict Nintendo by name, "Hey Why aren't you buying a Sega CD, what are you waiting for, Nintendo to make one?" That prediction is either true whether Nintendo made one or not. Cause if Nintendo does make one then it's obvious Sega knew all along that Nintendo must join the hype, if Nintendo doesn't make one then the commercial is valid as Sega knew consumer is just waiting for nothing as Nintendo did not jump on the CD hype until the GameCube. If Nintendo joins the hype, then they would had partnered with Sony and made the PlayStation, if they decided not to join the hype Nintendo would had just leave Sony alone and the PlayStation wouldn't had happen thus Trip Hawkin maker of the 3DO would had gotten Sony as a manufacturer for the 3DO instead just like Sanyo, Goldstar, and Panasonic. The real truth is Nintendo was going to join the hype, but they got full of themselves that they back down from the partnership and the PlayStation was created whether or not they back away. So the PlayStation happen because of Sega and Sega's influence and prediction on Nintendo.

Voan Siam if they had looked and did their research good and future proof their console...to hell with backwards compatibility....extra 64kbts of ram could have gone there..allowing more colors,more sprites,more sound with even crisper,clearer voice samples......almost 32x quality without any addon.

If it weren't for the Sega CD the Playstation may have never existed. And if you look past the shitty FMV games (and even some of those are fun in a guilty pleasure kinda way) it actually had some pretty great games on it.

The Sega Genesis game console was a breakthrough in the year 1989 when there weren't many competing 16-bit consoles available on American soil. The NES and a few 8-bit video game consoles were still popular at the time, as were a few home computer models.

thanks so much for this, many gamers forget or never realized what an impact Sega had and continues to have. most of our modern gaming has sprouted from the level of ambition Sega showed in the face of industry standard set at the time by Nintendo, Atari, and NEC. they are pioneers.

What a fantastic look back at my youth ;-) We were a through and through Sega family here in Australia: I got a Master System 2 in 1989 by pooling all my birthday money together. My aunt had one too and we’d call long distance many nights explaining how we got through the next part of Alex Kidd In Miracle World that had been holding us back. Eventually I’d be able to complete the whole game in just over an hour, hehe. A few years later my brother got a MegaDrive, I’m pretty sure the ‘blood code’ for Mortal Kombat is still burned into muscle memory. Interestingly the turning point for the SNES amongst my friends and peers was the release of Mortal Kombat II, which not only had appreciably better graphics than the MegaDrive version, but also had all the blood, gore and fatalities intact. From then on, the SNES seemed to always hold an edge over the MegaDrive.
