Kilroy was here first appeared in WWI and was used by service men and women throughout Europe as a way to commemorate their visit to that part of the world. Today they use their unit emblems and stickers to tag every place they go. Also this album is what broke the band up as members had trouble singing songs they didn't believe in. For me though, Styx is still an iconic group whos music helped me through some very challenging times in my youth. Thanks for this reaction and keep the 80s tunes coming.

Kilroy was Here was a concept album. “Don’t Let It” end is another good song from that album. There was also a mini movie that was played at the beginning of the shows when they were touring this album. I love Styx. I think the reason they’re a hated band is because of their music, especially in the 80s, being too commercial (selling out) compared to their earlier music. I was introduced to their 80s stuff first and worked my way backwards so I always enjoyed them. Dennis DeYoung tours with his own band now. I saw him pre-Covid, his band played the entirety of The Grand Illusion for the 40th anniversary of that album.

You won't find a band with a greater variety of music styles, from catchy pop like "Mr. Roboto" and "Too Much Time On My Hands", hard rock epics like "Renegade" and "Blue Collar Man", timeless ballads like "Babe" and "Best of Times" to a song that went #1 in Europe called "Boat On The River". "Come Sail Away" is an absolute must and represents the best of all of the many styles and dimensions of Styx in one song. "Lady" is considered by many as the first "power ballad." It is incredible that all of these amazing songs with such contrasting styles came from one band! Styx sold out Madison Square Garden twice and won a Gallup poll in the 80s as America's most popular band. A great band indeed. Enjoy!

This was a concept album titled Kilroy was here. When they tried taking it on tour it bombed, because for the first 15 minutes they were reciting dialog. This resulted in the band breaking up. Ultimately Dennis DeYoung, co-founder, was fired from the band in the mid 90s. A lot of fans didn't like Dennis' termination and being replaced with a sound alike in Lawrence Gowan. On the flip side Styx is the the only band to have earned 3.platinum albums and 1 double platinum album. Not even the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or, the Who accomplished this feat.
@rogermasa Жыл бұрын
I’m jumpin on this all late…here’s what you’re not hearing about the song on the comments: Dennis DeYoung, the front man and keyboardist for Styx has said that he never intended the song to be released as a single. Pressure from the label prevailed and it became on of their biggest hits and their most well known song. Dennis stated that “the song by itself doesn’t make any sense” and was intended to be performed live immediately after the short film played at the beginning of their concert about the ban of Rock n’ Roll in the future and the arrest, imprisonment and escape (via a Mr Roboto prison guard uniform) of Robert Orin Charles Kilroy. People didn’t care and loved the track when it came out because of the intrigue of the ubiquitous lyrics and synth lines. It was also popular in dance clubs around the country.

This song is a science fiction story condensed into a song. "Kilroy" is a name that endures from the WWII years in the form of graffitti upon landmarks of Allied captured towns in Europe. No one ever knew who Kilroy was or if he even existed. So there was a bit of a mystery or, as we would call it, "An Urban Legend." When this song was produced, some given 35 years later, then, if Kilroy was a man who served in Europe, then he would have been an old man. Thus, this science fiction builds upon that legendary figure not unlike the story of Emilia Earheart or D. B. Cooper. You guys are a lovely couple. I'd like to suggest a truly beautiful and bittersweet song among the country music charts during the 1980s performed by the excellent vocalist, Kathy Mattea. It is entitled, "Where Have You Been?" You'll need a whole box of tissues.

@@raymondgordon8600 Dennis was writing songs for the Styx album that was supposed to follow Kilroy. Then the band went on hiatus and he used some of those songs for his solo album. And guess what? If you love that synth sound, you might wanna look up a style of modern dance music called Synthwave. There are a bunch of sub-genres like Retrowave, Vaporwave, Darkwave, etc. but its mainly very VERY based in that 80s synth sound. some artists that embrace that style are: Todd Terje, Lifelike, Le Matos, Classicx, The Midnight, Timecop 1983, and Gunship to name a few. Oh, also Daft Punk (they arguably started the trend). Some GREAT stuff in that field of music. A good "beginner" track for you would be "Delorean Dynamite" by Todd Terje, a norwegian artist. If you like the Synth-Pop sound but want a modern take on it, i'd suggest Roosevelt. He's a german artist, writes/performs all his music & instruments on recordings (hires live musicians to play live), super talented. His songs "Last To Know" and "Echoes" are my faves...they definately have that 80s feel to them. He also did a cover of Fleetwood Mac's song "Everywhere" from that 80s & somehow made it sound even more 80s than the original! Cheers!

People say this album destroyed the band, and it did for a while. But they mad a comeback in the 90's and have been going pretty strong ever since. But like most older bands that come back, they rely on their classic catalog of music, and aren't really known for the new material they put out, so they're more of a "nostalgia" act. Nothing wrong with that though.

You got it mostly right but... coming of age in the '80s (15 at the beginning - 25 by the end) there's a HUGE theme that permeates a lot of 80's pop/rock/metal/etc and a lot of these songs come at them in different ways but they all questions the roll and control being exerted on our lives by the government, technology, and the media turning everyone into a commodity and doing the OPPOSITE of how they are sold to you... exactly like addictive drugs. It's all about control by the few upon the many. With a bit of perspective you can see how this is exactly how it's evolving, very quickly. Instead of liberation you get enslavement. Instead of "security" you get the opposite UNLESS you comply, you get fear and dependence. My generation was very sensitive to this as we were born under the dictates of the Cold War which was the same thing in many ways. Same church, different day, and more ways to force compliance. You may want to take a listen to Judas Priest Electric Eye now that you have heard this and see what you think given they came out within a year or so of each other.

This song was hated by the band. It was an attempt by Dennis DeYoung to do a concept album. This album is most likely what divorced Dennis from the band. So the experts say. I read all over the place this song was hated by STYX fans. True and NOT true. I love this song. I am as big a STYX fan as anyone. I have read many many comments of STYX fans loving this song. I have seen the live about 8 times. With and without Dennis DeYoung. I grew up with this band as a teen in the late 70’s to early 80’s. They were my fav band at the time. I once read the band hated it so much they would never play it live. I was at there concert in a little casino about 6-7 yrs ago. Front row when the band played this song without Dennis. It blew me away! I thought I would never see it played live. This band is outstanding and they sound every bit as good today almost 50 yrs later as they did in 1976. Tommy Shaw and James Young are the most underrated musicians out there today. Mr McGowen is an amazing replacement for Dennis. Still love Dennis better but they could have not gotten a better replacement than Mr McGowen. It is criminal that this band has not been inducted into the so called RnRHF. They are more than deserving. They belong there before any of the garbage Rap and Hip Hop artists that don’t belong there. It’s not their genre.
