I love Maya Hawke because she owns her nepotism and openly talks about her privilege in a way that sounds incredibly self-aware and not at all arrogant. She knows that her parents, and Uma's friendship with Tarantino, are in great part the reason why she is where she is today, but she's also confident in her talent enough that she doesn't feel the need to deny it, unlike others (like Lily Rose Depp and Kendall Jenner) who keep acting like they earned their spot by working hard when we know it's not true.

You do know nepotism babies still have to work hard right? They have to live up to their parents success. They get a much easier start to their careers, but they don’t just keep getting jobs because of the name. They actually have to have some talent to stay in the industry. Many celebrities will help their kids start careers, but then leave them to fend for themselves when it comes to actually sustaining that career and growing in the career/getting more experience.
@GioGio-fq1vl Жыл бұрын
@@hiimjai6064 I do know some of them work hard to maintain their careers, but that isn't always the case, and even if it is, it's still way easier for them. Plus, they still have the famous last name-- Do you really think a producer is going to reject, say, a Fonda, an Eastwood or a Coppola? Not to mention that they're all rich; they can afford to be jobless for a few months while they wait for new projects to start, while a regular person would be juggling one or two jobs, acting classes and auditions. you don't have to be mad at them. Just being aware is enough. Some people are born with good looks, talent, the right parents, money, the right country etc etc. Everything is based on luck, even a person's atitude to work hard is largely based on environment (parents/ country or even opportunites to work hard) and/or genetics. But also some of Nepo babies are talented enough to be in their spot, it just sucks that it blocks other people who aren't born into wealthy, famous families. That's why contacts and knowing people aside from talent and hard work is VERY valuable in ANY field. One of the first advice I got from my teachers in university was to try to get in contact with powerful journalists. I got invited to an event with literal presidents to prepare the 30th anniversary for children's rights just bc people i worked with knew someone. That might be true but would she be there if her parents weren't famous? I think not. That's the whole point. Being nice and down to earth doesn't change the fact that it's unfair that nepo babies get these privileges to begin with.

It's bound to happen in any economy. People become pioneers and establish themselves in positions, they would want their sons and daughters to continue the powers they have established. And competitors need to be kept at bay so wealth stays in the family, so entry into a field like this is going to become a lot difficult over time. It's just natural
@zacharymakenzie8773 Жыл бұрын
This issue isn't limited to acting and the reason it will not be affected is because anyone can do anything with the right conditioning. You can take anyone. Anyone can be a great actress, you can buy everything today, including ur looks.
@Rayowag Жыл бұрын
It's honestly so annoying, not because of the connections alone, but because rich kids inherently have a better shot at being in the industry even without connections because being from a wealthy family means you can fail as many times as needed and go to all the places where you can network. No other creative industry has paywalls this high to even get your foot in the door. Only thing close to it would be athletics and specific parts of fine art. Hell, even just growing up in a city like LA or London is an instant higher chance to know people. I feel like most other industries got at least a little bit further away from being paywalled, like music or publishing books. The internet made those easier to make yourself and simply become good at marketing and networking in those spaces specifically. Acting only really has student films and KZbin as an option currently. Hope that industry gets a bit of a shift because big parts of it are clearly stale af.

Thos babies might be very talented, but I think many people tend to forget that if you're born to a specific environment, it is also easier to nurture and develop specific talents simply by proxy. Children of musicians tend to be better at music than their peers just by being around music all the time growing up. Children of cooks tend to be good at cooking just from learning from their parents. And so on. They may not become geniuses of their fields, or even reach their parents' heights, but they will be more successful in their parents' fields than people who came from different environments. There are, of course, exceptions, but the tendencies are there. It is one thing to become a successful actor when you are born into a family of engineers who don't believe acting is a job, won't encourage you, support you, finance your acting education and have no connections that can help you. It is another thing to become a successful actor when you have parents who will support this path, encourage it, share their wisdom and experience, share their connections, and have the money to give you the best training there is.

The Judd Apatow thing about “he could have killed him!” sounds ridiculous and is definitely somewhat melodramatic. However, when I studied criminology (in the U.K.) the number of younger folk (especially men) who wound up in jail serving time for manslaughter after a drunk fight went wrong is… sad. Usually someone would throw a punch, the other guy loses his footing, falls and hits his head on a curb, and that’s that. Most of those fights were mutual, they were associated with alcohol, the type of fights that happen a dozen times across a city on a Friday night. Slightly different luck, and both dudes would walk away spitting insults over their shoulders and go onwards to the next club.

With the horrible work hours Disney kids have to go through, especially, Miley Cyrus, there’s a piece of me that’s glad that it’s a nepo baby so at least they hopefully have a family that a) doesn’t use them as the family’s main income, and b) can emotionally support them because they know what it’s like (simultaneously makes it worse). It’s still child abuse, though.

Honestly, I feel like I have better things to do with my energy than get mad at people who were born into very privileged positions. Mostly because I'm not trying to become a Hollywood actor. I feel like every industry has some form of nepotism behind it (most of success is about making good connections, and if you're born with them that's just saving an extra step) but it isn't going to stop me from working hard to at least try and get where I want to in my career.
@blurgle9185 Жыл бұрын
The discussion is important. The attention towards Hollywood is huge. It sets a standard that nepotism is good and right. That norm permutates into our culture and subsequently into all fields. I've watched my not so competent friend take higher and higher positions at his daddy's construction company, past his working buddies who've poured their lives into the company for decades, and he doesn't feel shame whatsoever and nobody dares to voice their frustration in fear of being seen as "petty" or obstructive. It's a cultural shift I find pretty appaling and potentially dangerous. We can't single out every industry but Hollywood is a good representation for the problem and if nepotism is seen as widely shameful in our culture, then my friend wouldn't slide past his more meritable colleagues as easily.

I don’t blame the parents or children for taking advantage of their position. As a parent, I wish I could give my daughter a secure career. We consumers have power, though. Bolster and support your local artists and performers. If we show mass interest in a particular actor, producers will hire them. Or make your own projects. Lord knows we are all tired of this sub-par, rebooted crap on the streaming services.

He was not a cool or popular guy, just a very ordinary bloke with some well-known family members. I remember hearing some gossip from one of my friends about him getting into acting like his dad and three of his older brothers, and I was geniunly concerned, like "oh poor Bill, I hope he finds his own way eventually and don't feel like he have to follow in those big footsteps 😔" and a few years later he's a Hollywood celebrity hahaha

Same thing with models. It isn't even just about booking jobs. This happened during a NYFW, where castings for shows will have 50 girls sitting sometimes for hours, waiting their turn to get called in. Now everybody is tired and hungry and just wants to get the damn thing over with because we all have other castings after this one. Then, the model daughter of a former supermodel pulls up, walks past everybody and heads straight inside. She's in there for a few minutes and leaves directly after. She pretty much books the show immediately. She knows the casting director and doesn't need to wait for her turn. And it is frustrating because while the girl is nice and is objectively a good model with a good walk, the shortcuts that the industry allows for her definitely make her life easier and its easier to continue booking jobs. I can't stress the difference between showing up fresh and ready to walk, knock out 5-10 castings in one sitting and have time to grab lunch or go to the gym after vs the chaotic and exhausting life of a regular, non-nepo baby model.
