By lifting and supporting your back wheel and pedalling backwards, if your wheel starts to turn backwards (with a slight amount of drag/delay), this is a good indicator that your free hub bearings are starting to seize.

Katie, I feel your pain - literally. I was out riding yesterday and I stopped to help someone and I fell while stopped. Yeah, I know! After getting up, I realized that I hurt my ribs. Yes, they are bruised and I'm off my bike for quite a while. I'm glad you're back in the saddle.

@@KatieKookaburra That's a tip I'll try. But I'm going to have to wait a while until I can actually stand up straight! It's a little embarrassing that I hurt myself while stopped. I should have, at least, been flying down a hill at 30mph and wiping out in a glorious ball of wreckage.

You're just an emotional person that touches the emotions of others! I admire you for that, there's really nothing to feel demeaned about 😊🙂 I hope the bruises weren't piercing too much and I'm glad that you were back at it the day after, it means that you are feeling well already =) Other than the scratches it can feel like a part of one's own identity has been stripped away from you, even just momentarily; Suddenly, you feel like having drifted further apart from what makes you feel sincerily happy, hence why a pang of sadness can be readily experienced. We're here to support you, we are not here to judge you! Make the best of it while you're still there, take really good care and look after yourself Katie ! 😁😄😊 🙂 👋 =]

Oh bless!!. So sorry to see you upset!. My wife sends her sympathy as 3 weeks ago we were out for a ride when an bloody big alsatian dog appeared from a field and knocked my wife clean off her bike. She hurt her hip and elbow quit badly and yes was crying in the road!. Turned out the dog was friendly and wanted to play!. The farmer who owned the dog was more upset than the wife lol!.he did dash off and came back with his truck and loaded poor penny and her bike which was mostly fine and drove her home. He later appeared at our house with a massive bunch of flowers and a huge box of chocolates apparently the dog had never chased anything before so he was caught off guard!. Just goes to show you never know what can happen on a bike ride lol!. So glad you are ok.

Because you ride frequently in wet weather the free hub should be serviced every few months. I do mine myself. It’s not really difficult once you learn. Another area of concern is the bottom bracket if you ride in wet weather a lot. Wet weather increases the need for service more frequently on most of the bicycle.

from my experience at the end of a season before i start a new one i always take my bike to the shop and have all cables changed , bearings , basically a overhaul, i do switch out my chains once they stretch out ,after a few chains i will change out the cassette , makes a difference in shifting , once snapped a chain on a climb that stung, these are just bumps in the road , did have a similar problem with a cassette and hub once destroyed the hub ,bearings let go with 60km to home took a while , anyway was great to see that you had help from the people there . keep on riding

Good to see that day-after-smile! There’s a certain satisfaction to service the bike, and it goes well beyond the obvious peace of mind. Took me years to get there, as I was born clumsy and scared of tech and mech, but was well worth the investment. Regarding hubs, DT Swiss is the way to go. Very reliable and extremely easy to service. Today I bought flight tickets to GC for December, been 4 years since last time 😊

Well, that made me sad to see you upset and with a banged up knee. I'm glad that you found such a good mechanic. Freehubs are prone to those problems. Some shops don't fix them, or even swap them out. I learned from another KZbin channel how to service Shimano freehubs, and have even fixed a freehub on a wheel that a shop gave us as scrap. I've seen you work on your bike, and I'm sure you can learn to do this, too. Better luck in the future!❤

I said "FREE HUB!!" out loud as soon as you described the problem. I had EXACTLY the same thing happen with the original free hub I had on my current bike in the spring of 2019. Same situation, uphill under tension the cranks would suddenly lunge forward with no resistance and you can neither anticipate it nor balance yourself when it happens. It's the "pawls" in the hub that transfer the torque you produce pedaling sticking "closed" preventing the normal physical connection between the rear mech and the wheel due to worn springs or corrosion, or in simpler terms, the hub is allowing the drive system to "free wheel" both forward AND backwards. It's a very scary feeling when you're pushing uphill, your feet are clipped in and suddenly there's zero tension on the cranks. Glad you're back on the road and OK Katie! - Bob (Toronto Canada)

Did you clean your bike with degreaser and high pressure washer a lot??
@Wyliedawg
@Wyliedawg Жыл бұрын
@@truthseeker8483 No, never, although back then I was a lot less in-the-know about just how sensitive to water ingress many areas of these machines are than they are believed to be by many, including many an online reference. The entire bike gets a thorough wipe down with a damp chamois post-ride, every ride, and a garden hose wash with biodegradable bicycle cleaner maybe 4 times a season, typically only if it gets road dirt/water sprayed on it. (I don't ride if there's been recent rain or any chance of rain!) I'm very tempted to start removing the chain entirely for cleaning/re-lubing every few hundred kms as products that clamp around the chain for cleaning I strongly believe have allowed that "gunk" to get into places it shouldn't as well. I've also seen contamination in liquid form exit the bottom bracket frame area when that has been removed for service. (A press-fit, sadly!) Bottom line seems to be there's a fine line between wear/performance issues from too much dirt/gunk through simple neglect versus over-cleaning and causing damage by being too finicky.

I feel your pain, that really sucks we have all been there, cycling is not like running where you just put on a pair of sneakers and go. It's hard to kiss the road and not hurt. Make sure to clean your wounds with soap and water so they don't get infected. Take your time to cry it out and then move on. Sometimes I apply the ten-year rule, is it going to matter in ten years if that doesn't work add more years!

Also have your cage plate on your derailleur checked. I had a very similar issue with it jumping, making climbing almost impossible in the lower gears, because it was partially bent over creating an alignment issue and constant jumping around. I (and the bike shop) didn't realize it, but it likely gotten bent when I had previously broke my hanger bolt. It worked fine in the upper gears...and I had actually raced it in some crits in that condition with no issues (but was primarily in the upper gears the whole time.) BTW, I also had to Uber back from the climbing ride. (I had to give up.) I typically have my bike checked at least once of a year. But there are always things that break unplanned. (Cables, hanger bolts, etc.) Chains and big rings are changed just about every year. The bike shop always asks me...do I ever use my lower ring? I spent more time going fast (Crits and Road races) and its not like I don't use the lower ring...but 90% of the time, I'm in the big ring....and have a tendency to wear them out much quicker. Just the way I ride I guess... Sometimes you just have bad days on the bike. It happens. You just have to take the bad with the good, and hopefully the good greatly outnumbers the bad (does for me). Sorry you had a bad day...we all have them on occasion.

Hi Katie I always use the strava gear function which essentially logs all the parts mileage on your bike ( you have to enter each part manually) obviously if you start with a complete new bike just enter that then retire and add new parts as they wear, this also gives you a good history of the parts you have changed. hope this helps.

I think you did the right thing by showing this video. It gives food for thought to think when was the last time we had our bikes checked over by the professionals. It goes to show things can easily go wrong if you don’t keep on top off it. Take it easy, things like that can often happen, it happened to me some times to fall when the chain fell down or the freewheel "skipped", one is always suprised and too slow in releasing feet from the pedals. It's not a "natural" situation we are accustomed to. So I fell, though I was nearly still...Now, fast reaction in that case is one of the automatism I tried to teach to my nervous system. What counts is that you didn't harm yourself so much. And some tears after (and before we are sure) so many splendid smiles, well, they count even less.

Can empathise as I had a similar experience when my free hub failed totally just after I had climbed a steep road (Butt Hill Lane) outside of Garstang in the Bowland fells. I had absolutely no ability to pedal (chain just going round with no tension but luckily I didn't fall off) and freewheeled around 4 miles downhill to a place where I could call for assistance from my wife. Again my bike was well maintained but it's a component you can't see if likely to fail. Trust you are OK and enjoying yourself again.

On crappy non riding days I will find some bit of my bike to ‘strip and clean’ (thank goodness for folk doing YT vids!) An old army saying is the ‘7 Ps)…..prior preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance 👍🏽😂 Main things I’ve learned: wear surgical gloves; buy the right tools and make the LBS your best friends 👍🏽

That's an unusual problem---the hub pawls were not engaging inside the hub. There must be something that caused this problem, I would be surprise it has to do with the lack of maintenance. Is it possible something is defective in that hub?

You need to service hubs more often if riding in the wet also. If your bike gets really drenched you basically need to service the hubs. As much as you ride, I'd be checking them at least every other month.

Bummer. I've never had it happen to me, but I guess it's just a matter of time on my older bikes. Once, I actually happened upon a rider whose free wheel went on him.

I'm sure memories of your bad accident a couple of years ago came flooding back to you, Katie. However, obviously your tears just disappeared when you got to the 'right' bike shop, so no real harm done. I have different wheels (cheaper ones) than you but my gears are Ultegra. I had an 'issue' that annoyed me and I couldn't find the problem. Eventually, I discovered that one of the jockey wheels had seized up, which was quite a surprise. I still like the Ultegra gruppo, though.

Few things are as deflating to a cyclist as being extremely excited and looking forward to a ride, supported event, race and *something* throws a wrench in your plan - physical, mechanical, or otherwise. Hang in there and Ride On! ;)

So sorry you came off the bike. Sad to see you cry. I've never worn out a wheel hub before and that's after many, many years cycling. Maybe all the torque and pressure of your climbing wore it out. Did he replace it or rebuild it? Heard you make that cute echhhh sound again at 6:13 and 6:50 lol. I've mentioned it before and that you sometimes make it with seeing a beautiful hilltop scene or when you're exasperated.

Aww!dang it!I feel your pain. I had that happen when I was in Italy on a cycling trip - had the gears jumping all over the place so I had to ride up the mountain in too big a gear because that's the only way it would stay put! Ugh! it was so painful and when I got to the top and there was a wonderful old fortress as the coffee stop so i went in to use the loo and it was just a hole in the floor - there was no way I could squat down to pee with my legs pumped up like that - so funny. But seriously - it took 3 people to figure out what was wrong with my bike and fix it.

having a fall on a bike is a big event, so no wonder you are upset! takes a lot of work to get a bike to any destination, so it's just fuel to the disappointment pyre! very interesting problem, I've only had one problem with a freehub in 30 years, but I'll be paying more attention in the future - thanks for sharing Katie!!
