I'd turn up at a job interview at a Renault dealership in this and park it right outside their reception ❤

The 845cc engine was also 34bhp - it was the 1108cc engine as utilised in the R4GTL, R6TL and the Rodeo 6 that was the oddity with 34bhp again. The same 1108cc engine when fitted in the R5TL came with 45bhp and in early versions of the R9C/TC it came with a massive 47bhp. Renault repeated the same detuning trick with the 1289cc engine when fitted into early versions of the R5GTL, where it was rated the same 45bhp as the 1108cc engine.. Other installations of the 1289cc engine came rated variously at 50bhp (R12L), 54bhp (R12TL) and 64bhp (R5TS and R12TS), the latter courtesy of a twin-choke Weber carburettor instead of the usual Solex carb. They also did different output versions of one engine for the R16 - apart from early ones that could have a 1470cc motor (with as little as 54bhp - this was back in the mid '60s...), they used a 1565cc engine rated at 66bhp (R16TL) or around 84bhp (R16TS - with Weber carb). The same 1565cc engine ended up turbocharged in the R18 Turbo and Fuego Turbo, with upto 132bhp in the '80s. The R16TS was eventually supplanted by the R16TX with an expanded 1647cc engine that also saw use in the R20TL and R18TS/GTS (and later versions of R18GTL), up- and down-rated variously at 73bhp (R18GTL) 79bhp (early R!18TS/GTS), 90bhp (R16TX) and 96bhp (R20TL and later R18TS/GTS). I assume the detuned installations were to suit the use of lower-grade petrol (2-Star instead of 4-Star), although I'm pretty sure that my Dad always used 4-Star in his two R16TLs (he also had an earlier R16, a 16TS and TWO R18 Turbos, so he ran the 1565cc motor in different guises for about 20 years altogether). The push-pull gearchange was necessitated by the powertrain installation (longitudinal with the gearbox ahead of the engine). The R16 repeated this installation method, but put the gearchange by the steering column for a bit of civilization. This allowed the R16 to have a relatively long wheelbase, which was one of the keys to its ride quality (only the magical pneumatic Citroen DS was more comfortable back in the day). The things I learned as a small child who collected Renault brochures in the '70s....

What did they do, to make the 1108 only produce 34 bhp? And, in fact, what was the point of putting it in the R4 ? More torque, I suppose, but even so...

I'm jealous. I'm so jealous. I've had loads of 4's, including a 4x4 Sinpar van. I've lusted for one of these but they're well 'out of my league' unfortunately. Not just a Renault 4 chassis, but inner wings and bulkhead as well. The inners on a regular 4 were a serious corrosion area but they are bolt on panels as well as the outers, so not so bad if you can get the panels. Speedo binnacle and dash is also regular 4, (minus the wooden adornment). Later 4's (GTL's with the 1108) had a standard H-pattern) It also has a later 4 steering wheel.

Thank god it’s NOT a Méhari. I’m sick of the site of the bloody things, they are EVERYWHERE in Noirmoutier. The trendy thing to have. 15,000€ for a plastic 2CV. The Rodeo is much more interesting, and here in France a lot cheaper! Mechanically with its water cooled engine the Renault 4 is streets ahead of the 2CV anyway IMHO. I’m not biased at all of course, and neither is Rita my 1985 R4TL 😂 Rita has the same angine and will do 100kmh (just about). 0-100kmh ? Eventually, I’ve never had the patience to wait…

My college friend Daniel had a Renault, not one of these alas, but even just a Renault sedan was blindingly rare in Boulder, Colorado in 1973 or so. Wonderful car. Stood out in a dorm parking lot full of VWs and Mustangs etc. like an effortlessly chic French beauty. It likewise had no shortage of ash trays LOL although Daniel and I were outliers as American teens who did not smoke then. Well, not cigarettes if you know what I mean.

Neat disappearing trick! Fascinating fact about the wing mounted water jar. If you broke it you could replace it with a picked onion jar! Or a jar of Libby's Apple juice available at the time. That's my favourite 4 dashboard. The vents were good for letting water in too. Early gearboxes had first on the bottom left. You pushed forward for second and a spring took the toffee apple to the middle to push forward. Go straight forward from first and you'd hit reverse.
@CharstringАй бұрын
First opposite reverse was very practical for parking manoeuvres. I liked that shift pattern but kept trying to change up out of top gear (when going downhill...) and bouncing off the empty space where there wasn't a fifth gear.

I owned and restored a green 1976 R4 Rodèo in the 1990’s in the Netherlands. Fun to drive but sold it after a couple of years driving in 2001, new owner died that same year and than i lost track of that car. Some people of the Dutch R4 community think its exported back to France about 23 years ago. Original Dutch rego from 1976 was: 38-41-RB.

Yet another excellent review of a vehicle I'd never heard of, plenty of shake and rattle I think I'd be looking behind the car while driving to see if bits might have fallen off. Even though it's a utilitarian vehicle, I wonder why they decided to make it quite so ugly, that and the massive price hike over a Mahari seem odd marketing decisions.
