Turning straight to the referee immediately shows that he knows what he has done and fears the punishment he actually believes he should receive. This is why police and courts take remorse into account when investigating and judging crimes. It’s very telling about their psychology and whether what they did was deliberate or not.

Something I’ve heard virtually nobody comment on is Fabian Schar (the Newcastle center back) low key did a very dirty play himself in this sequence. If you go back and watch the incident again you’ll see Schar himself fall over but then very slyly put his boot right up into Duran while on his backside. He did it in a split second but if you’ve played the game you can recognize exactly what Schar was doing. He was using a seemingly innocuous tumble to hide the fact he was laying one on Duran himself.
